I think your parents want the best for you. Get a real job, rent an apartment, pay your bills, find a wife, and make grandkids.

When I was 21 (1996) I had my own place, was married, worked hard, my wife had a full time teaching job, and the TF collecting was “on hold - thanks to Beast Wars :tfgrin

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER ABOUT COLLECTING TFs!

With the right job and enough money you can back-collect everything you may have missed getting to that point. Also, you may save the extra money you spend on eBay orders when you find Primus (and others) on clearance :thumb

A lot of good points made here.  They're right - move out and they can't say anything.  Still live at home, and their rules, justifiable or not, are ones you must follow.

umm besides carpentry and plumbing i am also on call 24 hours a day in disaster services, I help people who need it... i am trained as an EMT, search and Rescue and a First responder. I am also FEMA certified to run a disaster shelter, and have done so. I also took the classes and the training to become a fire fighter, but do to some problems with the local fire dept, I refused to join (they are idiots)

ummm i could go on and on with this type of stuff, but I won't, just know i have done all this since i started my newest collection.

All people ask me is how many more can i get, and what happens when i Run out of room

oh yeah im only 24, and fixin to be 25

A lot of good points made here.  They're right - move out and they can't say anything.  Still live at home, and their rules, justifiable or not, are ones you must follow.

That's ridiculous IMO. Would I be able to make rules like this for someone who was renting out a room in my house? He's not a child anymore.

Since this is going out to the parents, here it is:

Look, I'm 23, live with my dad and yes, collect Transformers, i have around 1000 of them! I have other hobbies, and intrests. I work from home and sell items on eBay with my dad; enough that i don't need a "real" job. On the side I work as a writer with several friends and are in the works for 2 tv shows and several other projects. I will be buying up a few copyrights near the end of this year and will have a "real" job working with those copyrights.

I have a friend who is 24-25 and he also collects tranformers. He works on computer models that apear in comercials and private company adds (that'd fall under computer nerd stuff). He makes around 500-700 dollars off each job and has worked with famous artists around the world. He is known by just about everyone in his town and is well on his way to having a very good future for himself.

Let's look at the bigger picture: Leonardo Dicaprio=toy and comic collector, Nic Cage=comic collector, DJ Starscream (a member of a famous rock band)=toy and comic collector.

oh, sure, these are all famous people. Localy, my collection is seen as weird, but there are farmers and nascar fans whose homes are overflowing with collector toys and items from said areas.

A hobby is a hobby. It something to do, and have fun with. Just because you dissagree with it doesn't mean you are right. There comes a time when a kid/adult has to be cut loose, is you like it or not, they will do what they feel is right and all you can do is give them your advise.

Toys don't hurt anyone, they are plastic, and that's about it. So i hope you can hear these words froma fellow collector and understand that we are all friends, not just some nerds sitting at our computers. We are people, we have jobs, and we have fun.

Well, something may have clicked.  Because the Alt Meister (in fishbowl packaging) that I KNOW my folks got me for my bday, had something taped to it and I found out what it was when I accidentally bumped into the shelf it's sitting on.

What was taped was a folded piece of paper indicating an order from Amazon for Alt Mirage, though I think it's a pre-order because it had dates ranging in mid August, but it wouldn't be the first time I got a pre-order for my bday and had to wait for the actual figure.  My parents did that with reissue Star Convoy last year (who btw is still minty in his box, stickers applied though)

In response to the "get a life" and "cut the umbilical cord" type comments:

Have any of you been following the housing market or any other moderately complex facet of the American economy?  Let me tell you, it's not all smiles and sunshine or as simple as packing up and moving tomorrow.  Getting a loan for what a house is going to cost is damned difficult for a single person working at mid-level professional job.

I mean, hell, a guy making a little under $40K a year with a car loan and a school loan qualifies for just under $80K.  You know what houses start at in this area?  The last several weeks I've been seeing about $120K to almost half a million (hell, just land to build on is inching towards a year's salary).  Doesn't account for PMI if your downpayment is too low or constantly increasing property taxes (some counties jumped by 20% this year alone) either.  When the local newspaper said demand for affordable homes is increasing, all I could muster was "well DUH!"

On the other hand, you can pay just as money per month to rent a small apartment (which is fine, if you're into renting, but it's going to be that much harder to save for a house with another huge monthly bill to your name).  Sure, you have nothing to show for it but no weasel banker has to wring their hands at the terrible terrible terrible risk of loaning you more than twice your salary.  As sky high as the returns on real estate are these days, I don't know what they're so afraid of.  You might default and they'll sell the property for four times what they loaned you?

The best advice you're getting is to really moderate your collecting because you are going to end up having to save ALOT to bridge the gap between what a bank will loan you (especially if your employment/income situation doesn't improve) and what a livable house (or a wedding, a virtual pre-requisite to an adequate loan) is going to cost you.  If the housing bubble bursts in the meantime, so much the better.  Sorry that message has to be obscured by the crudeness of "grow up mama's boy."

Amazingly, after checking out this thread this morning, they apoligized, and I think they're starting to get the idea that I won't wind up a social outcast.

It's a diversionary tactic i tell you!
