well i personaly dont care about the theory behind it...because the fact that there are sentient robots that can transforms is fine enough to take imagination...so why couldnt they change sizes in the proccess....but i do like UM's theory and since ive never read said guide it may be the only one i have ever heard that makes any since....but hey primus is a bad@$$ and there is all kinds of energy involved with all the transformers..maybe they had a special energy in them that allowed them to do it..mebbe they have built in shrink molecules or something...i know it sounds geeky and farfetched....but hey so does the rest of it......now when we were kids did we care how they did it...not me...i just thought it was cool that they did.....megatron did it everytime starscream used him...and soundwave....now imagine a tapedeck that size (if he didnt mass shift) would have sucked....though i would want the speakers

im not talking about this thread here...its more towards the reason i heard there is no mass shifting in the movie "because people wouldnt be able to grasp the concept" thats whats wrong with the kids of today no friggin imagination......

better UM i was almost on topic this time:))

Now explain how every TF(and every cartoon character for that point) can just put their hands behind thier back and grab a weapon or  object straight out of thin air?

Dr. Strange had a garage sale.  He sold many of his cloaks to both Autobots and Decepticons. They, in turn, researched the magicks of the cloaks and concluded that an advanced science was actually at work.  They then adapted the technology of the cloaks, which allowed Dr. Strange to store things into "pocket dimensions" and adapted it to their own body structures.

Optimus Prime and Omega Supreme have the greatest version of the adapted technology, allowing them to store very large things in those pocket dimensions.

damnit i should have known that:)) ^^^^^^^

Guys... the whole idea of mass-shunting is quite old amongst Transfandom. There are essays written by Transfans that go into all this and attempts to explain the ridiculous science behind it. Here is a brief summary.

You can go look for the extended fan-essays on the web (try the Lexicon), if you want to read about it in more detail. I see little point in discussing it any further - I really think the fandom has reached as far as it can with this topic an extremely long time ago...

I read that link and their theory about mass-shifting tells absolutely nothing, it's just a short collection of empty sentences.

BIG problem with your explaination:

1 ) ALL Transformers that have mass shifting would have to be able to withstand fusion level temperatures without damaing critical componants, such as the Laser Core. Yet we frequently see characters like Soundwave running from things like Slag's flamethrower, and many of the laser based weapons seem to have the same effect on these individuals that they do on others - at least judging by how frequently they run from them.

Best explaination is simply that it's something our science cannot explain. End of story.

I said it was a brief summary - there are extensive essays written by Transfans about this kinda stuff out there. Go fetch.

There is also another brief explanation of this on the Formidable FAQ. Remember folks, always read this FAQ and do your own web research before asking your questions.

Valandar: I never said I agreed with this theory. :P The fan essays try to explain in more detail, but at the end of the day, it's heavy reading for a hypothesis that is ultimately, a load of Blot. As you said, it's basically something which goes beyond the understanding of our science -- this is science fiction fantasy, people. Giant living transforming robots is already a huge stretch of the imagination as it is... :P

they explained it good enough in the dw mtmte encylopedia-ish last issue for me. and as far as guns coming out of nowhere... in the dw comics when prime takes down devastator he pulls his gun out of his back, but it shows a lil compartment open up for it. i thought that was neat.

I was talking to the initial poster, Ultimum Prime, not you, Goki. His "heat the metals up to fusion temps" bit would also mean anyone close to a transforming TF with mass-shifting would be horribly burned if not incinerated.

How many times have we seen Soundwave jump out of someone's hand by transforming? That QUITE rules out his theory.
