And I also found it weird that folks that were so into TRANSFORMERS were opposed to CHANGE.

This is the most awesome quote. EVER!!! :thumb

How is that awesome?  You might as well say "I enjoy breathing air but I hate windy days."

I was at Botcon the year they showed the first episode of Beast Machines. I sat and watched it, and didn't really know what to think of it. I have always considered myself to be a hardcore G1 fan, but I did enjoy the Beast Wars show immensely. After a while, I thought that I was going to hate BM, but I watched it when it came on regular TV anyway. I am SO glad I continued watching it, the show just got better and better as it went along!

While I still don't hold it above BW for overall cool story and everything, it is still an awesome series in it's own right. I can't put G1 above either series, obviously, but BM and BW did not "take away" from G1, it only managed to add to it. :thumb

No, only Beast Machines took away from G1.

Still, I wonder if I would have been okay with the BM story and ending if it were done in a different way.  For instance, if all of the spiritual, new age crap were removed, but Cybertron still ended up as a techno-organic planet, I might have been okay with that. If the show were more action oriented, without having to hammer home some hippie, Earth Day crap, I might have actually like what happened in Beast Machines.

And I also found it weird that folks that were so into TRANSFORMERS were opposed to CHANGE.

OVERREACT'D

Zaku II - thanx!  i'm flattered that my quote is in your sig.  You rock!

Mike Prime - Well i'm not going to argue your opinion, because opinions are neither right nor wrong, only facts have that distinction.

You can't compare breathing to wind conditions, though, that's just silly, and not an adequate comparison.   Sorry.   Maybe, "I like ketchup on my fries, but not drowning my fries in it."

I'm merely saying that here's a toyline that can actually branch out and try more things than other, non-transforming toylines can do.

Think about this -

Vehicles into robots.  Cool.

Hey, why not some non-vehicle devices?  Sure.

Robotic animals and insects too?  Ok.

Hey why don't we make some that combine to form a bigger robot?  Cool!

I have an idea - let's make some turn into more than one thing.

Hey - let's see just how many things we can get something to turn into.

What about a symbiotic partnership where a smaller robot becomes the bigger robot's...

head? :thumb

gun? :thumb

engine? :thumb

face? :thumb

armor? :thumb

hey, since they're all about disguise, how about a secondary disguise outside of their transform, where they PRETEND to be something else?  (poorly executed for the most part in my opinion, but a good idea nonetheless)

How about really really tiny ones, that come with accessories?

How about ones that don't transform?  (ok that one didn't sit right too much with me, but I think the rationale for Actionmasters came from a desire to have more poseable TFs but without the skills at the time to still allow them to transform.  Actionmasters are not as poseable as some latter-day TFs, and so their only gimmick has been outdone by something else that ALSO TRANSFORMS.)

Here's one - how about some TFs that transform themselves?

TFs that light up?

TFs that make sound?

TFs that have smaller TFs that unlock features?

TFs that are a mesh of organic and robotic?

Why are we so ready to accept that there are people in sci-fi stories that are cyborgs, a la Terminator etc., but that robots wouldn't find any use in exploring that as well?  You don't think that there are robots that would like to be organic? (coughHoundcough).

Robots aren't the next step in our evolution,  they are their own evolution.

Hey here's one - let's have a robot that turns into a creature that exhibits plant-like attributes!!  We did animals, why not plants?

This universe is so big, that to dismiss plants as only the way they are on Earth is foolish.  There may be a world out there with plant-based sentient life!  That's as different from here as robotic sentient life, isn't it?

Having just watched the whole BMac series in the past few days, I am still amazed how much controversy Botannica stirred up.  I think her backstory is an awesome idea.  True, that ep had a little TOO MUCH EXPOSITION, but still an awesome idea.

BMac still had characters that were good, characters that were evil, and they all possessed an alternate mode.  Sounds like a TF show to me!!

Biggest mistakes in the show, in my opinion -

How can you create a plant transformer for the first time ever, and not put out a toy for it??  That would've SO been mine.

How can you create Megatron's Megahead, have it turn into that crazy ship thing, and NOT MAKE A TOY FOR THAT?!!?  my God, the first time I saw that happen, my jaw got rug burn.  Considering some of the things I've paid upwards of 40-50 bucks for, I SO would've picked up a supreme sized Megatron that turned from BFH to ship.

My point is, no other toyline has THAT much malleability as a toyline whose most basic intrinsic quality is CHANGE.  And I just thought that fans of such a bold toyline would be more tolerant of change, that's all.

I've been sayin' this ever since the BM show first came out, but I want my Botanica toy!!

From robotic plant to plantlike robot and back!

Zaku II - thanx!  i'm flattered that my quote is in your sig.  You rock!

Actually, thank you! You put it so eloquently into words just what I myself had been feeling all these years but could never quite come up with the right phrase... you rule!!! :thumb

aww thanx.

Do you honestly believe that, after 11 years of sticking to one continuity, after multiple chances to try something new, be creative (the Japanese had), that Hasbro would have given us a fresh start if they could help it?

Watch Bob Skir's interview on the BM DVDs.

Sadly, I cannae afford it. :(

But as you put that as I reply, I can guess the general gist, in which case I'll say I'm still skeptical.

Not debunking. I haven't made up my mind that I'm right, but I have heard several quotes attributed to Bob Skir, and later read others that seem to contradict earlier statement.

And it wouldn't be the first time that writers have "retconned" reality.

But like I said, I'm skeptical, not debunking. As unlikely as it sounds, it is possible that Hasbro did change over a decades practice, though I'd still say that since that time they have gone back to their old policy.
