Why all the hating on Simon Furman?

Recommended Posts

To my knowledge, it seem Furman's dug himself a hole in terms of his own storylines and where he can go with them -- since he made them, he's now reusing and recycling them, and people are tired of it. If Furman could write a G1-related story without using a SINGLE Unicron or Primus reference, I'd respect him.

Let me know when the Japanese cartoons stop doing Unicron stories.

Seriously.  Try reading the comics before condemning them as re-hashed G1 crap.  Also keep in mind that (as Deathmarch has said repeatedly) the Marvel comics were the first place a lot of these plotlines were appearing.  And also keep in mind that there may have been forces behind the scenes at DW instructing him to move the story in certain directions.  The writer of a comic isn't always at liberty to create stories out of nowhere.  Quite often a certain amount of 'editorial guidance' occurs.

About the Ultimate Guide ... I can't help you because I haven't read it.  And really, I have no urge to.

Me Grimlock just hates Dreamwave becuse he isw DLP's shadow.

1.  He's hating on FURMAN, not DREAMWAVE.

2.  Last I checked, it was YOU who hated Dreamwave, not me.  So, as usual, your useless addition to the conversation makes absolutely no sense.  (big surprise)

3.  If MG is my "shadow" simply because he and I agree on things (which is what I -think- your incoherent comment was supposed to mean), then that must make Deathmarch Madhammer's shadow since he's always there to back him up, eh?

4.  I guess that makes YOU Bodycount's shadow, too, since you always seem(ed) to agree with everything that little pissant said.  (Nevermind that you apparently feel it's your job to try to take up the slack left by his being booted...)

As for Furman..  I -have- read his crap, and my opinion of it didn't change.  The writing was bad, the plotlines were just so much drivel, and he was apparently unable to come up with anything better than Unicron being "The Utimate Evil" which needed an "Ultimate Good" to validate its existence--I mean, really, how old is that lame plot device?  C'mon.  A UNIVERSE of possibility, and the best he could do was give the Transformers a "God" and "Devil"? :roll

The man was a crappy hack writer, and still is. The War Within was better before he touched it, and the fact that his Armada and Energon books were leagues better than their respective cartoons isn't saying much,

The only thing worse than Furman's writing was the writing job on the Micromasters book.  :puke  (and Britney Spears's singing, but that's a whole different argument.  :P)

And also keep in mind that there may have been forces behind the scenes at DW instructing him to move the story in certain directions.

Like I said in my post, great writers take the most out of it.  It forces them to think of new ways to tackle the issue.

Furman didn't.  He rehashed his old works.  Thumbs down.

So ... if it's discovered that the stuff he did was exactly what DW wanted him to do, is he still a crap writer?

Well, to be fair, he also made Rodimus Prime into an actual character, made a great rivalry between Galvatron and Ultra Magnus, and many other non-Unicron related stories.  The Unicron-Primus thing is just what seems to be focused on here as if it's the only thing he ever wrote.

Again I go back to read the comics before judging them.  Just like anything else, reading someone else's summary is NOT the same thing as experiencing it yourself.

I did enjoy the Marvel comics he wrote but I don't like his Dreamwave work. To me: All TF cartoons > all TF comics.

Baseless guessing.  Yeah, DW purposely told Furman to write crap.  Please.  Your Furman love is clouding your mind.

Wow, this argument is getting vicious. Um...really, now, why would anyone WANT their writer to write garbage? Isn't the point of comics to have a GOOD story? While it's true that writers must work with certain guidelines, I don't think anyone told Furman he MUST bring elements like Unicron and whatnot into the comics. Why all the hatin' on me for having an opinion, even though I HAVEN'T read the comics themselves? I've read enough about Furman to know what a sad little rehasher he really is. Like I said, I don't wanna get confrontational with anyone, but please don't try to shove Furman down my throat.

In DW's comics he had to have Unicron because Hasbro had a Unicron toy to push. And then the repaint to push.

Furman love ... funny.  More like a lack of Furman hatred.

Sorry if I'm not joining in the Furman Hatred Parade.  I don't hate his writing and I really can't say if he's an ass or not, since I have never met him in person.

BTW, not baseless guessing.  Hypothetical question.  You don't know  what the editorial 'suggestions' were.  Remember that DW was formed by guys who were TF fans already, so any and all fanboyish crap could very likely have originated with them.
