Why all the hating on Simon Furman?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I never read the Marvel TF comics when I was a kid. I only learned who Simon Furman is within the past few years. But I don't think I've ever seen a more vilified figure who's associated with TFs (outside of Aaron Archer). My question is, "why?"

In particular, what I don't get is how people lambaste Furman for his additions to the TF universe when that was his job as a writer for the comic series. Was it just that you didn't like his ideas? I don't have a set opinion one way or the other, I'm just curious.

well, for most people, it's the fact that Simon Furman tries to push the G1 comic continuity over all the other continuities. he's very closed minded about the whole subject, believing that the comic continuity is the only true one. and since Furman wrote most of the comics, his reasons for prefering the comics over the other media come off as nothing more but personal bias. and then there are people who hate the metaphysical religious concepts that Furman introduced into tf's, for whatever reason.

I don't think it's what he did, it's just that people tend to dislike him either because they think he's arrogant (Which from my experience is unfounded), that he's had too much influence over the mythos, or simply because it's what all the cool (hah!) kids are doing.

I personally like him. I certainly don't worship the ground he walks on, but I think he's a pretty cool guy and has put together some neat story arcs. His over-reliance on Grimlock and (To a lesser extent) Starscream does get grating though.

I don't quite get it either.

The marvel G1 was great, I'm glad we had a writer who didn't treat it as a cartoon book or a commercial rag.

Though I think some of the DW arcs fell flat by the end, I don't hate him for it.

i dont hate him. like Papa prime noted he took the TF concept and made it into somthing good not just a way of plugging toys

Well, for me im split on Mr.Furman. In person he is a short bald fellow with very english dental work, and seems a bit nervous and yet eager to talk with fans. Id say he was a very nice guy in person.

My deal with him, is that I have seen some spot on, great writing from him, the kind that makes you excited and your hairs stand up.... AND I have seen some really crappy stuff from him as well. Hes a guy of writing extreams when it comes to quality IMO.

However I will say all his good writing, far outweighs his bad.

NOW, if he can just write a story that doesnt have: timelines/time travel, Grimlock/Unicron, "giant uber universe crushing plot device of doom" as well as every single nod he can make twards overused christianity mythos references.... (he even named a Transformer 'Leviticus' just recently)

...THEN I WILL BE IMPRESSED.

lol. Im still mixed. But id rather have him onboard, than not I guess.

I like his stories, but they do get extremely repetative.

Anybody else notice how Grimlock's 'death' in Age of Wrath 1 was nearly identical to Impactor's 'death' in Operation Volcano?

Personally I enjoyed Furman's work on the TF comics and I could give a frack less what everyone has against the man. He has made his mark on the TF series and IMO he has the right to prefer one storyline over another. None of us on this board have contributed anything remotely close, so I just respect the man and say to those who Starscream and moan about Furman, do something better yourself otherwise kindly shut up. Yeah this was harsh, sorry if I offended anyone, but it's the same with people who constantly bash G1 or other TF series, layoff already! If you don't like the series or toys, whatever, fine. But quit poking people and/or provoking people just b/c they don't see things your way.

MH, you knew I'd come in on this one. It's mostly what Hornet said -- the guy glorifies his own continuity (comics) as the dominant one over all others. It's what ruined the TF Ultimate Guide, at least for me. The man refuses to acknowledge that most Geewunners remember the cartoon a good bit better than the comic, and that they don't like having HIS continuity shoved down their throat. That being said...
