Why all the hating on Simon Furman?

Recommended Posts

Personally I enjoyed Furman's work on the TF comics and I could give a frack less what everyone has against the man. He has made his mark on the TF series and IMO he has the right to prefer one storyline over another. None of us on this board have contributed anything remotely close, so I just respect the man and say to those who Starscream and moan about Furman, do something better yourself otherwise kindly shut up. Yeah this was harsh, sorry if I offended anyone, but it's the same with people who constantly bash G1 or other TF series, layoff already! If you don't like the series or toys, whatever, fine. But quit poking people and/or provoking people just b/c they don't see things your way.

My Exact Thoughts...

Also, from my experience a lot of people simply hate him since he prefers the Comics over the Cartoon and that those same people who hate him have never read the Comics...they just hate it cause it's not the Cartoon's Continuity and that maybe the stories in the Comics could possibly have more depth to them.

MH, you knew I'd come in on this one. It's mostly what Hornet said -- the guy glorifies his own continuity (comics) as the dominant one over all others. It's what ruined the TF Ultimate Guide, at least for me. The man refuses to acknowledge that most Geewunners remember the cartoon a good bit better than the cartoon, and that they don't like having HIS continuity shoved down their throat. That being said...

*Waits DM to unleash unholy hell on this topic*

Heh...nah I'm not...well, maybe a very little...

I love the TF Comics, always have, always will...the main reason why is because the Toy's Tech Specs in G1 are the things that got me into Transformers, not the Cartoon. Those Tech Specs are more closely-followed in the Comics than what the Cartoon did. I love TF:TM and Season One with all my heart, but...

The Comics are more developed in story, universe, worlds, characters, and characterization. It's the NATURE of Sequential Art that allows them to be. One of the reasons I love BW so much is that it gives far more depth and characterization in a way that is parallel to the way Comics can.

Furman's stories, particularly the UK Comics, are well-developed in story, tone, and characters. Transformers was Furman's friggin' baby. So what if HIS GUIDE, HIS GUIDE doesn't accept much, if any, of the Cartoon's Continuity, it doesn't have to. It's NOT the Ultimate, Everything Guide to TF's. It's FURMAN'S GUIDE!

I personally don't give a rip if people hate Furman or hate the Comics. What gets me is people hating something in this fandom (BW, Armada, Energon, Comics, Toys, or Cartoon) without atleast giving it a major try with an open-mind. Now it's their prerogative, but that doesn't mean it still doesn't annoy the flying-f*** outta me.

Marvel Furman was cool.

Furman post-2000 was a cheap rehash.

I don't think it's what he did, it's just that people tend to dislike him either because they think he's arrogant (Which from my experience is unfounded), that he's had too much influence over the mythos, or simply because it's what all the cool (hah!) kids are doing.

I personally like him. I certainly don't worship the ground he walks on, but I think he's a pretty cool guy and has put together some neat story arcs. His over-reliance on Grimlock and (To a lesser extent) Starscream does get grating though.

All the "cool" kids are doing it eh?  ...hmmmm. :tftongue

I want to agree with you fully.

I've already stated that I like that he breathed some heart into these stories.

But people CAN judge even if they're not churning out the same product.

I don't know how to play the violin, but if I hear someone playing it badly, I can tell it's bad.

That's as simple as I can put it.

Judgement is allowed.  It ocmes with Furman's territory. Especially since he re-entered once the fandom was in full swing, it has to be expected.

I think he redeemed himself with the WORLDS COLLIDE armada arc.  He used time travel WELL there.  And I'm dissapointed that we never got to see the end of the AGE OF WRATH arc.

That's pretty much the truth of the matter. Do movie critics necessarily know how to make movies? No, most wouldn't know the first thing about it. It's human nature to Starscream and criticize things that don't turn out a certain way. Furman tends to reuse plot lines a lot -- look at the DW G1 comics. Bunch of character deaths, focusing a bit too much on Grimlock (sure I love him, but Furman seems obsessed with him -- don't get me started on how much I disagree with him turning Decepticon briefly), having character deaths left and right as if they're supposed to be poignant or tear-jerking (for me, they aren't -- having mostly the same G1 characters die all over again = teh boring), and naturally, bringing in...UNICRON, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. I wouldn't be surprised if he brought Primus into the mix were the comic to continue. I know this sounds harsh, but I hope he doesn't write for the brand new Transformers comic. I really am sick of how much his plot lines feel like something I've seen/read/heard before. Furman's not a terrible writer, he just obsesses over his own plot devices a bit too much.

And yeah, I know it sounds like I'm beating a dead hourse, but I really do feel the man is unfair to the other continuities (G1 cartoon, RID, Armada/Energon) by not paying them much attention. But I guess HE knows everything about TF, as HE is the end-all authority.  :roll

I always thought that for a comic writer he gave a lot of credit to the cartoon. On several occasions he has taken ideas from the show and added them to the comic. (ie Alpha Trion)

I agree...

Alpha Trion, Vector Sigma, Unicron and other things.

He has never said he was the end-all, be-all authority of TF's. Not once, not in one statement or interview. In fact the only time he's ever came off as thinking the Comics were a better Continuity was in HIS Guide to TF's, which became more or less the guide to TF's Comics Continuity.

In DW Furman never wrote Grimlock becoming a Decepticon during his stories. Grimlock was at one time a "friend" and competitive fighter of Megatron and Starscream, but never joined the 'Con Ranks.

You must be thinking of DW's first 2 Mini-Series. Furman had nothign to do with those series.

EDIT --- Kup referenced in one little bit of dialogue that Grimlock worked with the 'Cons at the very beginnings of the war in War Within, but it's still never shown.

In War Within, all Furman did was setup the one event that lets Unicron know Primus is still alive and where he is (Cybertron). This was something that had to happen to allow the original stories to happen. Did it have to take placec in War Within, no, but it make sense that it would have.

I would rather have Hirifumi Ichiwa write comics than Furman.

Most of us don't know OR care who that is, ya dumb BooB. May I remind you that most people here ARE TALKING ABOUT AMERICAN TRANSFORMERS ON THIS BOARD THANK YOU.
