At least Beyblade and Yug-hi-oh have Consistant animation/storylines and Plot arcs. Even if the Contex sucks(cards and tops :wtf) they are still supierior to 80's cartoons. Take of the Nostagla glasses.

teh controversy. :eek2

(G1 rant)Feel free to skip :redface

Danmit, 25 years old and as much as I hate it I have to agree with Xbob. I actually sat down and watch some of TF season3 part2 the othe day. The storys are damn near incomprehensible. It's all good fun but the consistancy sucks. The dinobots altogether disappear, and Blaster reapears with no explanation whatsoever. Computron was given a somewhat halfassed backstory where as Abonimous came from no where. Though seasons 1/2 fared much easier to watch they were still 20 some minute toy comercials with little plot/logic.

G1 rant end)

Though I don't make a point of watching a lot of cartoons these days since the mass majority of it is crap some of it at least manages to follow a coherent story and consistanst animation style. As much as it hurts, crap like Yug-hi-oh/Beyblade has actually done a better job adversing there toy/card lines than Transformers has done then and now. The exeptions being Beastwars/Beastmachines because of the line it drew between a good show/toy comercial.

IMO once everyone looks past the nostalga that was G1 and realizes that toons about cards/tops are exceptionally better despite content will understand the need for a new Takara free Transformers series. Though I'm not a huge fan of CGI animation over traditional cel, if Hasbro did again involve Mainframe in a new series it would hit big in North America and probably renew a lot of interest from those who dropped it since RID/Armada/Energon. The cartoon could be done in America while the toys/characters would be designed/marketed by Takara. If Takara felt they needed to motivate interest in the toys nothing would stop them from developing there own cartoon series based on the toys and doing whatever they wanted to with it.

Congratulations you nailed it. That's perfect. :thumb

As for the TF turning into human operated mechs part. What about "reinventing" the target- Headmaster concept. That way you can have human operated mechs in japan and sentient robots in the rest of the world.

Not wearing nostalgia glassed as I always need my regular glassed. Without then I cannot see. But even with poor eyesight I can see a lot of things.

I realize that a lot of the G1 stories were bad, very bad even. But they did have diversity as the stories were very different.

I mean I was unfortunate enough to sit trough a few Yu-Gi-Oh episodes and allow me to present the basic storyline. The only thing happening is a duel so all I have to cover is that:

*Bad guy kicks good guys ass for awhile*

Bad guy: you cannot defeat my robot deck/mist deck or whatever. You life points are nearly gone and you cannot hurt my monsters.

Good guy: Oh now, I am losing. But I cannot lose, I have to beat him.

*Suddenly good guy draws just the right card* (Yeah, like that would just happen. Ask any Magic player.)

Good guy: Yes, with this card I can beat him! *uses card*

Bad guy "Oh noo. This cannot be. I am unbeatable. Nooo.!

Well, anyone who has actually seen that crap knows what I am talking about. :-P (I hope it did not traumatize it you too badly.)

It is very easy to have a consistent storyline as it is just that stupid card game. Everytime I accidentally (trust me, I would rather go to the dentist for a root canal than to watch that Blot) I see that, they are playing that stupid game.

That is not a tv show, it is a 30 minute commercial though not one I would want to watch. I would rather watch commecials for tampons or wash detergents than Yu-Gi-Oh.

And G1 was made during a time when cartoons were only there to promote a toyline. That was the sole purpose of G1 and I will never forget that. But for a show made 20 years ago I do not mind.

Nowadays cartoons are more. Medabots was a great cartoon without focusing too much on the toys. The main gimmick of the toys was that one could switch limbs and customize the Medabot. Yet, this was not used nearly as often as one would expect.

The show did not rely solely on "miracles" (such as Yu-Gi-Oh drawing just the right card) which was in Medabots the "Medaforce". No that often failed and Ikki and Metabee had to use intelligence and cunning to win the battle. They even had to cheat once!

I also remember The Terrible Thunderlizards and Life With Louie which are also 2 of my favorite cartoons. Those existed just to tell a story or to amuse, not to sell toys. Even Beast Wars that did come with a toyline did not feature all of the toys as show characters in order to become what it is today.

So cartoons nowadays are not just 30 minute commercials. And in this age, I also expect more. 20 years ago I could accept flaws such as bad animation and poor stories. The same went for comics, stories were VERY different then.

But now I want a good storyline. Not just consistant because Yu-Gi-Oh is also consistant. It sucks ass the whole time. So consistent means nothing. (Beast Wars also had varied stories from humor filled stories to deeper ones such as "Code Of Hero".)

I talked to a Magic player and in a deck there is always a strategy a player follows and certain types of cards people use. So that leads to:

A) the player kicking the other's ass.

B) the player having his ass handed to him.

c) battle going equally untill someone loses with just a few points difference.

There are a few "ultra-cards" but those are rare and often enough one can only use one in a deck. So it is virtually impossible for a player to draw that card in every battle and just at the time he/she is in trouble. One or two times I can accept but not EVERY time.

Yet, that is just what happens in Yu-Gi-Oh. It always happens like that. How can anyone swallow such dumb and repetative story writing. My brother somehow can, perhaps I should try asking him.

I remember an epsiode of Metabots when a huge Metabot was awakaned. Metabee, Rokusho and Arcbeetle tried to beat it. First with a strategy from Ikki which failed. Then all 3 Medabots summoned the Medaforce (which is quite rare) and a huge "boom".

Naturally I though this was the end of the big Medabot. But it was not, it did not even "bend a fender". In the end Ikki and Metabee won by ejecting the big Metabots medal and thereby shutting it down.

I liked that a lot. Not good guy drawing the right card or using some kind of megablast to destroy the enemy but cheating. Different.

So if someone says to me Yu-Gi-Oh is better than G1, he is dead wrong in my opinion and the comments on IMDB.com seem to support me. There is a reason why the Yu-Gi-Oh movie only gets a 2.7.

The animation may be more consistent but that is all that speaks in its favor. G1 had varying storylines some bad and some good. Some very good because I was crying at the end of "The Golden Lagoon". And some so bad they also made me try :tftongue

And even though some stuff in G1 contradicted each other, that is explainable by the different writers, all of which had their own ideas for a "cool story".

Yu-Gi-Oh does have a consistent storyline but seeing how it is all about the card game (all I have seen them doing is duelling) and done quite badly at that, that it would never stack up to G1. There is probably one writer for Yu-Gi-Oh and his goal is to brainwash kids so they will buy that stupid card game.

(It worked for my brother and he bought 2 decks while he does not even play!) But this strategy can only work so long before people are on to him. And kids who get older lose interest.

I never lost interest in Transformers because it is a great show and has a lot of potential. Which is proven in the old Marvel and more recent Dreamwave comics. While Yu-Gi-Oh has nothing of that.

History will prove me right. In another 5 years people will still regard G1 as the start of all Transformers (and love it) while Yu-Gi-Oh is long forgotten. (I would say 20 but while Transformers will still be around then but Yu-Gi-Oh would never last 5 let alone 20.)

Except for the people in the mental hospitals as doctors will face 2 different Yu-Gi-Oh related cases:

1 the poor people who were brainwashed and actually think the show is cool.

2 the poor people who were not brainwashed but were unfortunate to see a few episodes of this crap. (I saw it and I was nearly traumatized.)

I already pity the doctors who have to work on these cases. :tflaugh

transformers just aren't doing very well in japan since the japanese prefer their giant mecha to be piloted by humans. they just don't like the idea of giant sentient mecha at all. i think hasbro is just going to end up hurting takara financially in the long run if hasbro continues to push takara into making tf's.

here's what i think hastak should do: Takara should fall back on the old diaclone formula which is human piloted mecha that transform into vehicles. that would probably go over better in japan than the tf concept. then, hasbro can import the toys under the tf brand name and make up their own backstory/cartoon for the toyline.

That's a rather flimsy assertion... :wtf What in the name of Primus would push you to believe such a thing when Takara is busting out new molds all over the place and securing Anime studios to churn out garbled crap for commercials/series? Cite a source, please. I mean, they just mass produced the DIE-CAST Predaking reissue of all bloody things, it's kind of hard to imagine them in financial decline.

And while I notice that later in the thread you noted that the companies splitting ways wasn't exactly what you implied, I do have to point out that Hasbro is the financial leg on which Takara's been standing in order to churn out all these molds (many of which are exclusive) of their own accord. Transformers are Takara's breadwinner that supplies independant funding to allow a Microman rebirth and the further nostalgic kick that Takara seems to have with its own products.

I couldn't agree with you more that Hasbro needs to secure a series for the domestic audience as opposed to force feeding us craptastic anime secondhand. While the G1 cartoons were far from great, they drove the sales home. BW was fantastic and in spite of the fact that I'd tried to give them up, I had the collecting fever all over again. If we had a Mainframe series that handled Cybertron, I'd probably get every scrap of plastic ever relating to the series with doubles, nay TRIPLES of every figure I could get my grubby hands on. The toys are so-so hese days with some amazing molds surrounded by molds that barely force a "meh" from my lips, with some proper storytelling, I could be better persuaded into supporting the line with gusto.

I mean, hell... Have you SEEN the original Rattrap? I love the figure to death, but even I have to note that he's just a shellforming piece of crap that can't stand properly. However, the show made him worth his weight in gold. I'm positive that could happen again if they would just push forth another domestic show. Argh.

I agree with Tek. I have a BW Rhinox sitting on my shelf at home. Why? Certainly not because it's a cool figure. I just love the character.

Then again, the flip side is that there are a ton of BW toys that NOBODY wants b/c they never appeared in the show. Hasbro exists to sell toys. They don't care which toys sell, just as long as they sell. Judging from their comments a while ago, the only way they would go back to a small cast like they had in BW/BM is if they were to sell multiple versions of the same figure.

i used to watch yugioh(i was young and stupid) and from what i could tell, they explained the hero's abillity to draw the right card at the last minute by saying it was some mystical force called "The Heart Of The Cards".

so basicly, the hero's deck of cards is suppose to have it's own soul :wtf

Dumbest explanaition ever! :wtf And it makes the stories even dumber because why not draw that card immediately?

And in Medabots the soul of the Medabot and the willpower of the Medafighter can call upon the Medaforce but that does not mean it always works.

Felt I should comment on Tekyuinajar's post.

A good character is a added incentive to buy a toy. I mean I love both Rattrap and Rhinox and that makes the toys even cooler.

Same went for Megatron, the toy is already cool but the character added extra coolness. As for Energon Megatron is so lame that actually makes the toy (which is great) less cool.

Imagine that. So a character can make of break a toy. Who would not want to own Waspinator. They should really rerelease him in a version that falls apart and reassembles with the press of a button. :tftongue
