Don Murphy update - movie SPOILERS

I maybe the only one, but I dont want a Jazz... I really want that character's name to be Meister (not a takara snob) when the alt was announced, I really fell for the name, plus if the resulting toy (what I am really concerned about) has to be named AUTOBOT JAZZ that is gonna suck balls

Meister(noun)::one who is knowledgeable about something specified -- often used in combination

He could have that name and still sound like my grandad... which btw has ALWAYS been creepy for me, I loved scatman, but growing up around old black guys, seeing one transform into a porche was always kind of odd.  I would love for meister to have a voice of a hip hop guy* or someone like sam jackson or Don Cheadle. Jamie Foxx wouldnt be terrible for that role but after ray and the pending miami vice, I am not gonna wanna see or hear his ass for a long time

*not Will Smith, a real Hip Hop Guy, from the underground, like Black Thought, Mos Def, or Q-Tip, those three have acting credits and were actually good at it, without selling out hiphop

For some reason, you just made me think of Redd Foxx as Jazz. Now there's something that'll keep you up at night...

The thing about making Jazz a hip-hop guy is that it's going to reek of "oh aren't we trying to be hip by having a rapper/R&B guy as one of the voices." To me that falls within the "celebrity voices" thing and I'm not crazy about that. If he could be cool and laid back in an understated way, I'd be cool with that.

I know we have had this discussion before and will have it ad nauseum,

but these types of films cannot exist without big name celebrities.... I mean DAMN who the smurf is Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack, ORSEN WELLS. lets face it, WE love transformers, but the rest of the worlds think we are a bunch of geeky virgin fanboys that live in our grandmother's basement, and work at burger king (no offense to anyone that exists similar to that, but I make the statement to show the percieved lack of diversity in fandom)

but anyway, I too have a wish list of voice actors for the movie that Include Cullen, Welker and Kaye (Kaye for megs and Welker for soundwave and all the other wierd noises he can make) I would even take Chalkk (Optimus Primal rocked, even the BM version :tfpuke) but I know that just like the original, we are gonna need celebrity voice talent to pull in the mainstreamers. hell I would rather have celebrity voices than celebrity ACTORS stealing the limelight from the bots, but like it or not, and no matter how hard Don wants to keep celebrity voices out (it also trims the bottom line) the STUDIO is gonna want some in, and that is what counts, I am optimistic either way (NEW TOYS :clap :clap :clap )

and SAJse I dont want 50cent's retarded ass in a movie at all (although it was amuusing to see him on the simpsons [he is a sellout too]) the artists I named are not JUST rappers, but HIP HOP Artists, there is a difference, no matter what the media wants us to think, but that is too far off topic to discuss here, If on this side of the pond, I will buy you a drink, pull out the old IPOD and we can discuss it

I just want the voices to suit the characters, celebrity or not.

Here Here!!!

That's all I'm hoping for.

Seriously, I couldn't care less if Woody Harrelson and Gene Wilder played Optimus and Megatron. As long as their voice acting fit the character.

I hear you smithy, and I'm not trying to argue that they should do everything in their power to NOT market the film b/c "Transformers is just so cool that the sheer awesomeness of the brand will bring in millions of moviegoers so they don't need to sell out by having celebrity voices and screw it anyway if no one goes to see the movie because it'd still be awesome with unknown talent" etc. etc. etc. And you do make a good point regarding the TF:TM voice actors, though I would add that the actors in that movie weren't exactly "A-list" at the time, with the exception of Judd Nelson. But I think that is more a reflection of how much $$ Hasbro was willing to spend on voice talent than how much they wanted to keep it "pure," artistically speaking.

The thing about voice acting, though, is that even the most well-known celebrity VO is no guarantee of box office success, because you don't get to actually *see* the actor. I mean, Brad frickin' Pitt was in "Sinbad," and that movie tanked. But he was also in Troy, where he ran around in a little gladiator outfit looking all buff and sweaty. Guess which movie did better? I know it's an imperfect comparison, but all I'm saying is that you don't go to the movies to hear people; you go to the movies to see people. (Also look at "Shark Tale" for another example.)

So my point is that celebrity VOs might cost a lot without actually producing any results in the long run, in terms of ticket sales. And I just don't want to see that happen.

And finally, I do have to mention "Lord of the Rings." Before those movies came out, who the heck had heard of Orlando Bloom or Viggo Mortensen? Elijah Wood had been best known for "Deep Impact", Sean Astin for "The Goonies" twenty years ago.... etc. In terms of well-known actors who would bring in the 18-34 demographic, there wasn't a lot to work with. But now you know who all these people are. All I'm saying is that if you simply cast people who are *right* for the part, everything will be fine.

Yet another good one OM...a very good one.

I have to agree with you here a lot...on the RIGHT choices for Voices and Real Actors.

Celebrity voices for this movie are just plain wrong. It would really suck if they have some celebrity/rapper/hip hop/sell out guy doing Jazz or what not. That would be so lame and cheesy. Look at the X-Men films. None of the actors were really that big. Well, Patrick Stewart was pretty famous for Captain Picard, but if he's not perfect for Professor X, I don't know anyone that is. The X-Men movies were f'ing great! With little or no "star power" behind them. You went to see the X-Men because it was the X-Men, not because of who was in it.

To hear some famous cheese ball guy doing Jazz would really suck. :tdown

*imagines Chris Tucker voicing Jazz*

*shudders*

Yeah I agree with you Diesel. Look at Hugh Jackman, as you were saying. He totally owned that role -- who knew? He was just some young Australian guy who didn't even really look like Wolverine in real life. But he happened to be a dang good actor.

You know who I've always thought would be cool as the voice of Jazz? Bill Cobbs. He has a great voice. (Sorry smithy if it'd be too much old black man-ness for you to handle). Hell, Bill Cosby would be great as Jazz.

BLACK-BABY MAN!!

I agree to an extent

- Rebecca Romjn is a star :clap

- Halle Berry is a star :tfpuke

and no I dont want jazz to be voiced by MC Hammer or Chris Rock (well maybe hammer for the joke factor-- hell he wasnt even the voice of Hammer-Man)

I am saying that I wouldnt be hurt if TF's that might not make the sequal were voiced by celebrities, the mainstays should be voiced by the originals or people who could really take ownership of them
