The G1s are nothing more then toy bricks made of die-cast and plastic. There is no articulation and they are as stiff as bricks, unlike todays transformers. They only have cool looking vehicle modes but the robot modes are noting more than bricks with swings arms :tfpuke

considering the technology of g1 figures is over 20 years old, how can you even compare the 2 like that? here is an idea, compare yourself now to yourself 20 years ago and see which one is better.

ok, anybody out there got any valid, THOUGHT OUT reasons?

Considering that they were made in 1984, i'd say the design is pretty cool for most of them.

I've got a few points to address, so I'm not going to bother quoting each one, just read back in the thread if anything I say seems out of place.

For the record, I consider myself a highly tolerant G1 purist. By tolerant, I mean that I have accepted the inevitability of change, and I therefore do not have any intentions of "forcing my beliefs and opinions down anyone's throats." I started as a fan of the cartoon and original toys (my first two were Prime and Warpath... Megs and Soundwave followed soon after) and since the reissuing of the toys and release of the original series on DVD, I've spent a LOT of money to revisit my childhood. A whole lot more than I like to think about.

Now that I'm looking upon the toys and 'toons that I idolized in my youth once again with adult eyes, I am seeing a whole lot of the issues that I never noticed as a kid. At 5, it was "Wow! Transformers! COOL!" Where as at 24, it's more like "Wow... that animation was horrible... why didn't I notice that plot hole? Oh, wow, Teletran magically knows exactly where the Decepticons are AGAIN..." and so on. I still prefer G1 to the newer shows, though... I'll get to that in a minuite.

As for the use of the phrase "G1" and the intentional misspelling "GeeWun"... G1 in my opinion is not a bad thing, as opposed to typing out "The Transformers" or "Generation One" every time it is necessary in a sentence. I don't see how, in this internet community, anyone can have a problem at all with the phrase "G1", and then go on to use such terms as "LOL", "ROTFL", "IMO", "IMHO", "PWN3D", "LMAO", "STFU", and my personal favorite, "TEH". This is the internet. If you can use "smileys", you can type "G1". As for "GeeWun" being disrespectful or condescending, I find it no more insulting than R2-D2 or C-3PO being referred to as "Artoo Detoo" or "See-Threepio". IMO, it is more of an affectionate personalization of an otherwise cold alpha-numerical term, than a derivative insult.

On to the newer shows... I missed Beast Wars, Beast Machines, etc... all the way up through Armada. Reason being, as a child of 7 or 8 when BW came about, I was of the mindset mentioned by LM that Transformers were and always should be vehicles or machines, mechanical dinos or bugs at worst, that turned into robots. "Trukk not munky", I believe it was reffered to as. Again, looking back now, I see the error of my way of thinking. I still have yet to see an episode of BW or BM, due to lack of availability. I may pick up BW season 1, if I can find it, and pose my final opinion at that point. My local Best Buy only has seasons 2 & 3, and I'd like to start at the beginning, if possible.

As for Armada and Energon, I hold them in the same group, one being a continuation of the other... I may be wrong, correct me freely if so. I tried to watch Armada when it came out, but the one episode was focusing entirely on two or three kids and some mini-cons, and I was lost. Did nothing for me. I recently tried to watch an episode of Energon on cartoon network's site, but I only made it about 7 or 8 minuites in. It was PURELY a commercial for toys. No plot, no charachterization whatsoever. Every bot who spoke to another called him by full name, as would be seen on the package, with EVERY SENTENCE. At least, (again, IMO only... not preaching, just stating my opinion) G1 tried to cover up the name dropping with some plot elements as well. Some plots were worse than others, but they were there. (Yeah, you had the obligatory pan & scan autobot roll call before rolling out every few episodes, but it was usually once in a while, not every time you see a charachter, you hear his name...) This may be a case of one bad apple spoiling the whole bunch, but so be it. I'll watch the BW series, then work into Armada and Energon later... 'till then, I hold no firm opinions on anything since G1, excepting maybe a lack of interest. I'm not one to make concrete uninformed opinions, which is why I didn't vote for the president. I'd rather make no choice than to make an uninformed one.

As for the toys, I also stick to mainly G1, as those are the toys from the show I was into. Not that I don't think some of the newer lines are cool, I just have no point of reference, so it makes them worth much less to me. I did pick up Armada Unicron and Energon Arcee, to fill empty places in the G1 toyline, and I may pick up a few others here and there, but I don't plan on it. Alternators are a different story, as they ARE G1 based, so my interest is there. Same with 20th Prime.

I agree wholeheartedly with the "Live And Let Live" statement. Arguing G1 against Armada is like arguing Metallica against Megadeth, or Hagar against Roth. Neither is better, they are just different. Everyone will have thier own reasons as to which is better, some may have no reason at all. I personally thought Van Halen sounded better with Gary Cherone than with either of the "original" singers. However, on that one, I KNOW I'm in the minority, so I keep it to myself. Listen to "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" while playing with your Optimus Primal, I'll listen to "Van Halen 3" while playing with my Sunstreaker and my Seekers, bricks they may be.

TO EACH HIS (or her) OWN.

POST WARNING>

Gen Zero,

This is the "why you don't like G1" post. :tflaugh

As for saying that Armada and Energon Toons are basically comercials, wasn't the G1 toons comericials too? And why is your buying motivated by cartoons? I collect everything from G1 all the way to energon, (with the exception of retarded animals that transform into retaredER robots = Beastwars). I don't base my decisions on the toons, in fact I don't watch any toon, as I am just into the toys and that is the way it should be. The toons are made for kidz in mind so they don't need plots and stuff.

I can't imagine someone skipping a cool toy such as Energon Starscream or Omega Supreme just because the toons sucks.

In my opinon, G1s are only good for that nastolgia thing but thats it.

how is Hoist goes to hollywood better than a Season-spaning countuing EPIC?

:wtf

Yeah, I know... my bad... I started out with the best of intentions, really... :tard

My intentions in my book... er, post... were to state that unlike most G1 "Purists" out there, I feel that everyone should enjoy all the Transformers lines, but everyone will have thier favorites, and thier reasons behind it. Also, to defend the G1 thing. As for my buying being motivated by the cartoon, it's not. It's motivated by fond memories of a time long gone in my life, when Saturday Morning Cartoons were the most important thing in the world. I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying this, but I don't really know why adults would collect kids toys for any other reason. I buy G1 and Alts for the nostalgia factor, but to me, Energon, Armada, Universe, etcetera, are just more toys on the shelf...

so what im getting is that pretty much everyone likes g1, it is just these "purists" that used to hang around that everyone doenst like

that about right?

It's more like everyone likes PARTS of G1. How many people go about advocating the joy of Actionmasters or Pretenders? Or Carwash of Doom or hoist up Carnage in C-Minor as an epic of storytelling?

I'd think, to be more precise, everyone likes G1 -as they want it to be-. I like Marvel's Primus origin over the toon's Quintesson one, for example - both are legit G1 origin theories, but are fairly mutually exclusive against one another. You can't have two wildly disparate creation theories.

Unless you're Constructicons.

Which is another thing that bugged me. TFs as a whole must have some severe identity crisis going on, as they don't know what they really are, where they're really from, or how they were made. This goes from an individual all the way up to a race. Just a big glaring internal inconsistency that I never liked in G1.

And G1 Purist isn't really a proper term. More properly, the people 'we hate' are GeeWun Pundits. A Purist is more inclined to like G1 and collect G1 only. A Pundit, by definition, wants to tell you their opinion, and if they got to shove it down your throat and wiggle their fingers in your colon and ampersands, they will and you just suffer for it.
