Leader Class: Electronics vs Accuracy

Recommended Posts

Sadly electronics are a part of a leader class transformer, when you remove the electronics you can fit that sane transformation (complexity wise) into a Voyager. An example of this being ROTF LEADER Prime and HftD VOYAGER Prime, same transformation- different size classes, only difference Electronics (and any spring leaded gimmickry.)

In a perfect world only the most complex of transformations should be in a leader, but that will never happen, just plain old transformation does not make it worth the price apparently.

You can't be serious??? Voyager movie Prime is nowhere near as complexe to transform than the ROTF leader version. Hell, the whole front of the truck sits on the Voyager's back. Do you even own the leader class version? It should be clearly obvious there's a world's difference between the two.

Now, back on topic. I don't mind electronics if they enhance the figure and doesn't limit the abilities of it. For example, I really wish they figured out some sort of lighting effects for the "War for Cybertron" figures. The game version have cool "Tron-like" glowing areas all over them. That would be super slick to have that kind of effect on a figure.

^He was talking about the new "hunt for the decepticons" voyager prime that we say at toy fair a few weeks ago. From the looks of it, its a simplified, scaled down, leader prime.

ROTF leader megatron is a good figure to bring up here: the transformation is simple enough for a deluxe or possibly even a scout class figure, but he's full of electronic junk that makes him clearly a leader class. This combination is just awful in my opinion and normally scares me off a figure completely. BUT! The black megatron repaint does make me want him badly, craptacular transformation and all.

The Masterpiece line, I think, has perfected electronics, which the exception of the Seeker mold, which has none. They're only lights, they're unobtrusive and add a significant amount to the figures, especially Grimlock. I love that light-up sword.

Actually Variable, if you watch the 2007 movie again, particularly his transformations during thescene when he first meets Sam, the highway fight, and in Mission City, the RotF Leader class toy transforms exactly like that, as do the original test shots of his transformation. How else would Prime's front wheels end up on his ankles? The only real difference between the RotF toy and the real design is that the hitch doesn't form his butt and small of the back on the toy the way it does in the movie–the rear bumper does with the hitch sandwiched between the upper and lower halves of the torso.

When it comes to TF sounds, I tend to rip the batteries right out (when they bother to include them). Ligts are OK.

I'm not really in this for the electronics, but when done harmless like the LaserCycles in G2 reissued in RID, I like it. 10 years later those parts still work on what are basicly scouts without being ubtrussive.

I honestly don't know why they don't do more of that? Other cheaper toys have it, hell they sell 5 packs of LEDs at the end of the isle in my walmart in 5 packs for $2.

but still...

What really bugs me is what happened in the last Universe offering. Prices when up on repaints who had their electronics stripped. Cost of plastic all you want, thats just a screw to me!

I would prefer just lights and no sounds. For instance, Mindwipe's head. He has a GREAT head mold and fantastic piping but you cant see any light thru it. If they could light up, he would really be a hypnotizin.

A light only gimmick might work well for the WFC figures too, they seem to have lots of lights running along their bodies in all the still images.

I would gladly pay for an all-over light treatment, which wouldn't take up anywhere near as much space as the sound boxes if they used button cells and led's.

i completely agree with that.

first to answer the question.. i really couldn't give a you know what about lights and sounds. the only good use for them is when my remote or xbox360 controllers batteries die.. i can just unscrew a transformer for an extra pair. but other than that.. there aren't any lights and sounds features in any of my figures that i enjoy.

like superconductor said, and i've been saying for years, it'd be nice to just have a light feature where you can have the eyes glow blue, red, or yellow.. and maybe have some of the vehicle mode lights stay lit.. like the hot toys iron man figures having the arc's and the eyes light up.

i mean, the sounds are usually pretty horrible.. like rotf leader megatron.. i sure don't need prime telling me his name, nor do i need to hear a horn honking noise, not to mention his eyes are blue, yet his lights are yellow.. i don't understand why the lights couldn't at least be blue. this garbage just increases the price of what is an already pretty expensive figure.

i wonder if having the lights and sounds in these figures really sells more. i've never heard of, or seen anyone (kid or adult) buy a figure because it has lights and sounds.

i actually think that maybe* if hasbro cut out the lights and sounds, lowered the price a little, they'd actually sell more and overall make more money.

oh and.. the leader class starscream voice is a crime against ears.

I went through the processes again with a fine tooth comb (well, as fine tooth as my TV would allow, at least!), but the transformation seems the same to me. The front wheels actually have a bit of a cheat, in that they seem to separate and roll on their own to their corresponding places with the rear of the truck. In the Diego Garcia transformation, you can watch the right front wheel roll partway, then apparently connect to the sleeper, because it then rises and flips up and over with the rest of the sleeper to form his lower legs. The crash guard at the back of the sleeper splits in two, then retracts its chains, and gets sandwiched between the sleeper and the section connected to the rear wheels, much like where the same section would end up in the 2007 Voyager (to distinguish that from the 2010 model). His feet actually come from the bottom of the truck (they pop out first during the big heroic transformation in 2007 before fighting Megatron), and join up with the rest of his legs when he stands up.

The front grill of the truck (seen mostly during the first 2007 transform) retracts its inner grill, and folds inwards towards Prime's chest. His chest actually seems to fold over a couple of times with its interior components before the windows, doors and the rest of the truck's front (minus the parts that form his arms, of course) close over that. The parts that form Prime's abdominals seems to be made up of parts of his engine, rather than the grill itself.

We're pretty much free to believe what we want, until they release some kind of comprehensive animatic showing the complete transformations. Don't really care if the animators resort to some cheats along the way (one animator mentioned something about "moving the main pieces in front of the camera while we shuffle a bunch of cards in the background during the 2007 extras). Whether or not it's accurate, there's still no denying that ROTF Leader Prime has got to be combination of a puzzle toy and an action figure in recent history. (At least, you don't see a Rubix Cube tear into bad guys like he had just played God of War!)

As for the electronics, I would like to see working vehicle headlights for both robot and alt modes. I particularly liked that feature with the movie characters. The transform sound is a welcome feature when it can be fit in (begging to question, how come I don't remember any real use of the transform sound in ROTF?) But accuracy can take a back seat if timothyVritchey is right about the toy prices being lower if the sounds and lights are taken out. I'd probably be able to buy more figures if I didn't have to compare costs so much.

Nope. The sleeper cab splits to form the "wings" on his back. Watch the mission city transformation. the grill splits and collapses, then the entire nose splits in two as he sits up, his windows split as the cab section folds down over his chest, he rises up on his feet from an essentially seated position, bringing his legs up under him from the front(like you would to get up from sitting on the ground), his rear fenders fold up onto his back along with the fuel tanks, and finally, he straightens up from being bent forward. Simply put, in vehicle mode, Prime's legs do indeed form the entire drive train. It's not a cheat. And yes, there is an animatic of his transformation.

Articulation > Electronics. Electronics are acceptable only when manually tripped and when they're well thought out.

:agree

Not good when it goes off when you just give it a glance.

ROTF Leader Optimus is an example of electronics gone evil.

:lol
