repaints

Recommended Posts

I agree, like I said in the begining of this thread, yes G1 started with repaints but as the line was proven they stopped.

The difference was back then that while Starscream, Thundercracker and Skywarp shared the same mold, they were 3 different characters.

Today they'd do the same thing but Thundercracker would be 'Horizon Attack' Starscream and Skywarp would be 'Night Sniper" Starscream.

That right there is the part that gets me, why reinvent the character with just a repaint? I liked it better when characters that were rehashed would be either retooled or rebuilt.

Jazz didn't need a new coat of paint every 3 months, he was fine just as Jazz. When it was time to change him, it still wasn't just a coat of paint but a whole new figure.

Those are the repaints that I pass on the most.

Considering that the upcoming Sidearm Sideswipe is an extensive retool with different weapons, and what looks like better feet, I'm glad I passed over the original.

I got the original and think I may use this new one as movie Sunstreaker. Sideswipe and Sunstreaker were brothers in the original series, afterall :)

I agree with what Liege said earlier about Swerve being his movie Sideswipe, since the deco is an obvious homage. I also like the idea of using Sidearm as Sunstreaker, but personally, I would only do that if I had the skill to repaint him with a proper yellow, orange and black deco. Because, a silver-gray Sunstreaker just looks like a bad day... (but not as bad as that joke!!! :D)

I hope that the ROTF repaints like Swerve, Dead End and Thrust would be a good example, and have minor retoolings, such as new heads at least, to accompany a new paintjob for other figures down the line.

Personally, I don't have a problem with re-decoes and fully appreciate the reasoning behind them, but to play Devil's advocate for a minute, there is a reason why even redeco haters want a complete set of Seekers, particularly the three original F-15's Starscream, Skywarp, and Thundercracker. That is because their characters have become so iconic that they have surpassed the fact that they're essentially repaints. The other three, the Cone-heads Ramjet, Thrust, and Dirge, being retools, each with their own unique pairs of wings have also become iconic characters in their own right. Throw in Sunstorm, whose intriguing origin and personality surpasses his starting out as an obscure E-Hobby exclusive. That is why even people who otherwise hate repaints still want the Seekers as a complete set.

The Seekers, iconic? Some of them maybe. Starscream definately. Ramjet is amusing thanks to his preferred attack method. But (in the cartoon, at least) Skywarp & Thundercracker were always just interchangable Deceptigoons to me. Thrust & Dirge aren't much better. If course, the fact the cartoon couldn't keep the Seekers' colors straight didn't help at all. Really, the only Seekers that stand out to me are Screamer, Ramjet, and thanks to his cardback bio, Acid Storm. At least Prowl, Bluestreak & Smokescreen all had distinctive characterizations - prick, motormouth (with a good reason for it) and gambling addict. Most of the Seekers might as well have been generics in my book.

TC & SW may not have been as developed as say Soundwave, but they were good characters. Even as I rewatch the show, some of my favorite epidodes are when they step up to the front.

Don't have a problem with repaints. I often enough even hope for a repaint.

With main line figures I often wait a while before purchase. Not only because I have to buy most of them on-line anyway and after a while the prices on e-bay drop, but also to see if there's going to be a repaint so I can choose the version I like best. Sometimes the first release is the best looking, and sometimes not. Repaints give the buyer a choice.

I really like what taktomy is doing with their alternity line: by releasing the mold in two different colors I can choose which version I like best. That way I don't run the risk of buying a mold only to be later confronted by a better looking repaint.

More repaints please and the sooner released after the original, the better.

EDIT: But there is one kind of repaint I hate and that is repaints that are almost the same as the original. For example, movie voyager Prime. There have been countless versions of that mold and they're all red/gray/blue. It's become so bad that I'm almost hoping for a magnus or Nemesis repaint just to see that mold in other colors. In blue it would've made a good Pipes, in gold a good Huffer (going to do that myself), the Rodimus themes Fireblast FAB Prime could've been translated to the voyager mold...so many options, but all we got was the same old red/gray/blue. Same holds true for movie Bumblebee.

Repaints are great, but they have to be different from the original.
