repaints

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone besides myself are sick of repaints

at first i didnt mind too much but it seems that Hasbro wants to make every cent

from each mold. In a way i understand but in my mind It cheapens the original toy

just a thought

I dont mind it if they are making an entirely new character, especially so if they use a mold that wasn't that available the first time around... But what they just pulled with Elita-1 is unforgivable. First of all she WAS in the movie and had her own design! Second of all the color scheme they are using on the toy is not even close to the cgi representation! WTF hasbro!

repaints went from being a treat, to overdone in a matter of no time. It's the type of thing that just let Hasbro get lazy

-does anyone honestly thing Beast Wars would have had this Elita-1 issue?

The argument is always made that there have always been repaints since the start.

That is true, alot of the first and second year figures where used multiple times. I understand why, they had no idea if Transformers were going to last or fade away like so many other overnight 80's toys. Even still, there was at least an attempt to add retooled parts when they could to deviate the figures.

They were just trying to fill pegs.

The difference came post 86 movie when the repaints pretty much stopped. Most of the minibots where retooled, granted Ultramagnus had a white Prime body but the rest was very different, and returning figures where just that.

A fine example is Superion. He was around before the 86 movie, and when they decided to stick with him stayed regular old Superion. There was no need for a 'matrix flash' repaint or anything, Superion was still working just fine.

That right there is why the G1 repaint argument doesn't hold water with me. Whn they repainted, it was specificly different characters. When they had the established following, we were treated to all types of new figures, retools, add ons, and no figure needed to be remade or reborn with just a color scheme.

Of course this may have been different in Japan, but I'm just speaking for US Hasbro

G2 of course was a ton of repaints. It wasn't bad though since most of the figures had been discontinued for years on end. The same goes with the Beast Wars reissue figures in the Fox Kids line up, and the origional Universe line.

The figures relaesed there were like a second chance, the origionals were long gone, and they weren't competing with themselves on the shelves.

During this time, a repaint was almost exciting. I tell you I still hate that I passed on Cryotek and Primal Prime.

Then in AEC they started to multiply. Hell nearly everything in the second year of Cybertron was a repaint, and that sucked.

Now it's to the point were a figure is hardly out before it gets a redeco, and you can normaly count on two or 3. Sure it's an easy way for Hasbro to make money (I play the violin for them), but it's a difficult way for them to keep intrest.

The way I see it today, is that if a figure is selling good, just keep selling it. Do we need 3 cannon bumblebees in a 9 month span? Do they think they're fooling anyone?

If Sideswipe is selling, just make more, does he need the pinstripe and crappy bio change?

That right there is the killer with repaints. Not only are we getting no time to miss a figure, hell half the new figures displayed at Toyfair were repaints and you could tell even the presenters couldn't get into, we're getting swamped in repition.

Optimus and Megatron for years did just fine as Optimus and Megatron. If they needed an upgrade they got a new figure, there was no need for them to get a shadow force nest watch redeco.

While I will admit some repaints are nice. Most are just over done.

Repaints serve a purpose.... To improve a figure. I wish Hasbro see this! takara Tomy is pretty good at it ;)

The difference I see there is that Takara is just doing it right the first time on their initial releases

ie Buster Prime isn't a repaint, it's a first edition there.

I know this doesn't always hold true (looking at the sublines from Takara) but they usual just seem to actualy repaint for special editions such as the Black Leader Prime.

buster Prime is a repaint with a added weapon.

Actually UltraConvoy, he's a retool, not a redeco. It has an all new head sculpt as well as retooled fuel tanks that become a cannon.

even the 2 pack version is a retool.

Takara has 3 seperate leader Primes out now. No matter how small the mold differences are, they are still there.

either way, my point is, Hasbro over uses and abuses the practice.

I think if we had the time to miss the figures, like with G2 and Universe we'd be more receptive to them. But when I go into any local store and see the initial Mudflap clogging pegs with Tuner Mudflap, you just have to wonder why?

That isn't an uncommon event either, the CD Scattershot repaints are still all over too.

If they're going to do repaints, fine, but is it to much to ask that they get spaced out?

3 Cannon Bumblebees in 9 months are to much, one is enough. If they wait on a reissue, they'd most likely have a better chance of selling it again if they waited.

the only time i like repaints is when they are in context...example...universe prowl being repainted into bluestreak and smokescreen...the seekers...granted i hate starscream....things like that....taking say ROTF sideways...and giving him a new head and paint and calling him dead end...not cool...i hate none show character repaints...

For me repaints are okay if they are a different character. But if it's just the same TF with a new paint job, then it's just a waste of money IMO.
