I just saw it a second time tonight. I really wanted to see if I could find any flaws that I overlooked in the first viewing and I'm happy to report that I couldn't. I can kind of see what Roger Ebert was saying

about the third act being more bullets and less story

but I disagree with him that this was a bad thing.

Even though the bullets are flying, Wikus was still struggling to do the right thing, and we see the pivotal moment in which he saves Christopher Johnson.

I think if it was drama 100% of the time through out the movie then it would get stale, and sci-fi lovers would feel slightly betrayed. But as is I feel the third act compliments it's sci-fi roots and make for an epic ending.

And I absolutely can find no fault in this movie. It's totally set the bar for future Sci-Fi flicks and I just don't know how they'll be able to extract the raw emotion that District 9 pulls from it's audience.

I also understand the complaints of the third act, but I thought it was a throwback to those classic 80's sci fi/action movies. I mean everyone would consider Blade Runner and 2001 a very hard core sci fi movie, but people also consider things like Terminator 2, Alien, Aliens, and The Thing as great sci fi as well. You said it perfectly though Breaker. The main character is not a hero nor a villain he is just "human". The final act really shows what kind of person he is down to the core.

It was a roller coaster throughout the whole movie. The first act set up the world. The second act provided the initial conflict, and the third act was the climax. I really envy the people that have no idea whats going on in the movie. This movie had so many twists, and the trailers and ad campaign only enhanced the secrecy.

However we both forgot to mention the humor in the movie. This movie has its own sense of humor. There were many comedic bits speckled throughout the film.

Can't I just rent Dawn of the Dead or Land of the Dead for $2 and see the same story?

Ugh, no. Where do you get zombie apocalypse from D9?

Like what? I mean the on-screen characters found certain things to be funny that I found to be horrible

Like the popcorn abortions

and anything else I laughed at was usually at the

insane graphic deaths suffered by anyone within the immediate vicinity of the lightning gun.

Not exactly comedy.

The only thing I can really think of and it was REALLY funny, and may be one of my favorite D9 moments was when

Wikus and Christopher Johnson are infiltrating MNU headquarters and Wikus uses the lightning gun for the first time. The soldier explodes and Christopher Johnston shrieks "FUCK!" in his alien tongue.

Chris - "I thought you said not to kill them."

Wikus - "Well he fuckin' shot me!"

lol.

Alright Breaker...that was phenomenal! I can't even get into it without spoiling the hell out of the plot, characters, etc. But I can say that I REALLY appreciate the dedication it took for them NOT to give away the freakin' film in the trailers!

Star Trek and District 9...best movies this year, hands down! Now if you want me to pin the blue ribbon on the best of show...I'd have to watch both several more times! They're two completely different films. But originality...definitely District 9! :thumb

:win

Well that is why it has its own sense of humor, yes most of it was dark humor, but look at Fargo. Anyway all those FU#$ YEAH moments made me laugh. Also the little joke of Wikus

being accused of having intercourse with aliens

Doggy style with a demon!

:tflaugh

I had forgotten about that part somehow lol

Best movie of the summer, blows RotF out of the water. All I can say is awesome, and nothing beats getting shot with a pig. :thumb

I thought this was kind of neat and surprising. My brother noticed during the end. If you look in the background mirror you will see a reflection of a sonogram. Wikus might be a father?!?!

AN ALIEN FATHER!!!

I just back from seeing District 9 (and Ponyo, just gotta lump those together. haha.), and it was a pretty amazing film. Slightly depressing, but still amazing. Anyhow, ya'll are talking funny moments, I can't believe anyone mentioned the

The suit's pig launcher!

Oh, just realized I hadn't even answered your original headline in regards to "which was better?"

DISTRICT 9 by...metric tons! :D

Ah dood, just came back from seeing this movie tonight! Its freakin' awesome! How can a movie with a budget of 30 odd million, have great character building, interesting/coherent story, AND believable CIG! I was on the edge of my sticky movie seat anticipating what would happen next. :yay

ROTF, sure I enjoyed that (twice even). Imax Sweet! But hands down, D9 is a masterpiece! :love
