megatrons voice not original/

Recommended Posts

:agree I don't have a problem with Hugo, he sounds fine (I could actually hear more Hugo this time around). But Frank has been voice acting for decades...he is perfectly capable of coming up with a variation to fit movie Megs. I don't think it would've been necessary to emulate G1 Megs...I'd agree with most that it doesn't particularly fit. But to limit Frank to that voice alone is absurd...sounds like what they did for the game...what a shame.

What was it John DiMaggio called him - a 'voice-acting god'?

I mean, he did like... Half the voices on the original show! How do you say NO to that??

Let's see... he voiced Megatron, Soundwave, Rumble, Frenzy, Ravage, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Ratbat, Skywarp, Mirage and Trailbreaker.

I disagree. So what if he is Frank Welker? Hugo Weaving is Hugo Weaving. I think Hugo's voice perfectly fit Megatron.

For fear of sounding like a broken record, because Frank Welker is Frank Welker. ;)

Bay stated that it would be wrong to ask Frank to change his Megatron voice. Besides, you probably would've been wondering why Frank Welker wasn't doing G1 Megatron voice and you would've been upset about that. Anyways, this is a movie 1 argument. It really a mute point now.

Not really, no more than I would be wondering about the various other things they changed.

Anyhow, I imagine "Well, Welker's old Megatron voice was a bit too raspy for what we had in mind, so we asked him to make it a bit lower and more menacing" to be more acceptable than "Oh yeah, I could ask Welker to do it but I would feel really bad asking arguably the greatest voice actor in history to take direction, so I just went and got Hugo Weaving instead".

You are right though, it's all a bit moot at this point.

However good Welker is for cartoons, his voice is err BAD for movies, the closest one of his you could aim for for Movie Megs would be Malebogia from SPAWN.

Apparently he was good enough for Soundwave. And Devastator. And Ravage.

Welker would have worked just fine. But this guy from the Matrix did a good job.

You see Matrix, I see Priscilla

I think megatrons voice was fine. I was just very disappointed they didn't modulate Soundwaves voice -- I think that was a huge mistake. There was simply no difference between megatrons voice and soundwaves voice in ROTF. That was hard to ignore for me in the movie and I found it extremely distracting and disappointing. I think they killed one of the most intrensic aspects of Soundwave - major mistake imho.

I can understand that Frank Welker's original voice for Megatron might not work so well on the big screen, but this is Frank Welker. I cannot emphasize that enough. He is Frank Welker. The idea that Frank Welker couldn't produce a voice suitable for move Megatron is absolutely ludicrous.

"WHY?"...when he's changed so much of everything else...

I got over him not sounding like Megatron when I saw that he didn't look like Megatron...at that point, I was just hoping that Frank would have had something to do with him. :shrug

From the way I interpret it, The whole point of getting Frank Welker would have been to give the fans the classic Megatron voice. There wouldn't be a reason to get Frank if he wasn't going to use his classic voice for the character. It would be like hiring Peter Cullen for prime and then asking him to use his "Eyor" voice instead of the classic Prime voice. Peter was hired because of the way he portrays Prime as a distinct voice. The same goes for Frank Welker. That's why the game used him, to give Megatron the classic voice the fans had wanted. It's not just the name, it's the voice.

The same goes for Soundwave. Frank used the same voice he had used in G1 for Soundwave, (though they didn't modulate it), that being his classic Soundwave/Dr Claw voice. It's very distinct and recognizable. It would have been better modulated, but it works.

I understand your point...but at the same time, for me (as a TF fan), Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime & Frank Welker is Megatron...period. What they wanna do with the voices is strictly up to Bay & Co...and I really don't have a problem with that. I just find it insulting to Frank. :shrug

And I'd agree that they did f'up Soundwave's voice by not modulating it...another insult to Frank. :doh

How can anyone think Megs and Soundwave sounded the same in the movie? They were vastly different!

Not modulating Soundwave was a bad move, but I really liked Hugo Weaving as Megs. I prefer the deeper Megatron voices over Welkers scratchy one, as no Megatron is like G1 Megs anymore. The only thing I didn't like was Weavings Americanisms. Like, calling out Devasta'or rather than actually pronouncing the last T.

Honestly, I think Animated Megatron has the best voice ever, truly evil and very fitting, I would've been happy with that.

Oooo, yeah! :beer

Yeah really. How could they have forgotten to modulate Soundwave's voice? It sounded incomplete without it and kinda wrecked it for me.

they should've modulated it and then dropped the pitch a little so it had a more menacing sound to it. Would've worked great.

I myself found the voices fine in my opinion,.mainly because everything changes,.for the good and the bad,.eventually you kinduv forget about how someone sounded,.before.

when they switched voices half way threw DBZ I thought a good deal of the second wave voices sounded better,.but still sorta missed some of the others.

Soundwave as he was a biigass sattelite I thought his Lol (Dr Claw voice was perfect for a mysterius space dweller,.who never came down or was even seen by anyone,.even though he clearly raped that US sattelite.ROFL.

that and even though soundwaves modulated voice sounded cool,.it was hard to understand sometimes.

that and the other previus soundwaves didn't have the same voice.so why complain know,.just for the sake of argument,

People as well as time and Cybertronions change,.and soundwaves just not a cassete player anymore.

we should just be lucky some original voice actors even took part in the new movies.

I am :con

I dunno...I just view it as the 3 voices of Megatron, with none of them trumping the other because they are all extremely character-specific. Welker's voice from G1 won't fit Bayverse Megs at all, and seems odd on AnimatedMegs, whose voice fits none of the other two but is perfect for Animated. From that standpoint, I can't compare the 3 (even though I like AnimatedMegs voice the best, I can't say it's better than the other two). AnimatedMegs voice is chilling, dark, evil, clearly upper-class, sophisticated and highbrow, absolutely contemptuous and it fits him. G1 Megs sounded like a battle-hardened field commander, but is clearly the more 'rational' of the 3 voices. Bayverse Megs looks like a monster, pure and simple, a dark, gothic antedeluvian beast, and his voice absolutely fits him. I don't think one is any better than the other.
