megatrons voice not original/

Recommended Posts

IMHO, Bay evidently had NO idea exactly who Welker was. While Mr. Weaving did an excellent job as Megs (I especially liked in RotF when he had more voice and less growl), I still seriously doubt that it would have been much of a stretch for THE Frank Welker to adapt his original Megatron voice to be a bit more realistic but still easily recognizable as the voice of Megatron (though I'm a bit disappointed he didn't seem to try with the game, just to show 'em). And I know someone will (at least want to) scream "BURN THE HERETIC!" for me saying this, but I heard that they considered Liam Neeson for Prime if Peter Cullen didn't want to do it (which I think would have been a good choice), and if it had gone that way, then I don't think Hugo doing Megatron would have bugged me as much... :shrug

They definitely should have modified S/W's voice though.

After seeing ROTF, Sometimes I wonder if Michael Bay even understands what "Transformers" are...

And on the subject of dead horses, maybe if we beat it hard enough the hollywood people will take pity on it and not kill "the next one."

Frank Welker does the voice of movie Megatron in the games, , as well as in Beginnings, and he uses his original G1 Megatron voice. It really doesn't fit the character. There's no difference in the voice between G1 Megatron and Welker's depiction of Megatron in the games. Bay knew Welker would have used the G1 voice, and felt uncomfortable about asking him to change it. It was simply smarter to look for a different actor to fill this very different version of Megatron.

I don't know... I actually really LIKED the way his voice worked for "Beginnings..."

But that's just me. :shrug

I know he did, what I meant to say was I was disappointed that he didn't try to prove Bay wrong by adapting his original Megatron voice enough to fit the movie design while keeping it recognizable as Megatron, rather than just "porting" (for lack of a better term) the voice straight from G1.

You get what I'm saying?

I liked Hugo as Megs in the first Transformers movie.

However in the second one I started to hear a lot of agent Smith and that kinda ruined it for me. In the first movie I did not even reconize it as Hugo.

As unusual as Megs sounded in the first Megs I think I did like it a little better cuz it seemed... I don't know, more unique or something.

I don't think anyone will argue that Welker's G1 Megatron voice doesn't quite suit the less refined and more monstrous movie Megatron, but the idea that Welker couldn't take direction and Bay couldn't give it is just silly. As has been expressed numerous times in this thread, Frank Welker is Frank Welker. He has over forty years of voice acting experience, has voiced over 1,200 characters, and is Hollywood's number one go-to guy for vocal effects. One might actually be able to effectively argue that if there's a voice Frank Welker can't produce, then it can't be done. Am I seriously to believe from the mouth of Michael Bay - a man who publically prides himself on his ability to deceive and misinform the fans during production - that the chief hang-up in hiring Welker was the insult that would result from saying "Hey, Frank, you think you can make it a bit lower and more growly?"

IT's not that Welker couldn't take direction, it's that Bay actually felt very uncomfortable giving direction to him or, more accurately, making him change what he felt was an iconic voice. He felt, if he were going to use Welker, it would be with the classic voice, not try and make Welker change it, regardless of whether Welker would do so if asked. That's why he tested the Welker Megatron voice using sample footage from the 2007 movie.

Hey, that's what I said - I find it hard to believe that Welker couldn't take direction, or that Bay couldn't give it. I mean lets look at the facts here - Michael Bay has demonstrated little compunction in changing any other part of the franchise to suit the needs of his films, and yet we're to believe that Frank Welker's depiction of Megatron's voice from twenty years previous is somehow sacrosanct?

Indeed, Welker was brought on to reproduce the iconic voice of Soundwave... which then appears in the film completely absent its distinct modulation effect. If this is acceptable to all parties involved, then why precisely is asking Frank Welker to modify his Megatron voice somehow a step too far?

I posit a theory: Michael Bay did not want or could not have Frank Welker as the voice of Megatron. Perhaps Michael Bay was shown an example of Welker's G1 voice and, unaware of the voice actor's prodigious skills and vocal range, decided then and there that he was unsuitable for the film. Perhaps it was mandated to Bay by the studio that at least one of the robots featured so prominently in the promotional material should have a recognizable name attached as voice actor. Who knows?

Whatever the case may be, I find Michael Bay's explanation to be questionable. He has demonstrated little problem in changing and adapting the franchise source material as he sees fit. He has derided the fan community and been quite clear about his intention, during production, to actively mislead and confuse the fan community. Why exactly are we supposed to take it at face value now that a director who ignores his script, recorded history and even the physical laws of the universe suddenly found an insurmountable directing challenge in the form of Frank Welker?
