Bay Downplays Revenge Skids & Mudflap Racial Stereotypes

Recommended Posts

I've read a lot of these reports/blogs/editorials and other stuff. I still just don't see it. I've asked friends and family who have so far gone to see it, and none of them see it either. They just see a fun movie, and they think the wannabe gangster attitudes of these two are funny at best, annoying at worst. I find them amusing. Were the useful, not really.

The guys were funny. But the gold tooth was to much.

i didn't overlook a single word of your first post - it's all aimed at white people

seriously people need to stop getting their knickers in a twist & drop the race card - ever heard of the boy that cried wolf? there seems to be 3 ways to portray "non-whites" in films: as a negative stereotype, as a positive stereotype, or to misrepresent them!?! i f'king give up

seriously all the people with your attitude need to get over themselves - NOBODY CARES - stop looking for issues that are not there & focus on the real issues like people being attacked due to race or any other type of REAL discrimination based solely on skin colour - all this politically correct bullshit is fuel to the proverbial race fire dude

I do not think Bay is racist as much as he is just culturally insensitive. I just thought lot of the humor based on race were rather weak in terms of delivery. Not only that is so overused in past decades.

I do not mind race humor as long as it is clever and funny. Robert Downey for example in Tropic Thunder was hilarious. In the end I was not really offended by the stereotypes. It was the crude humor that made me cringe. It was very painful to watch.

Nobody cares? Is that why people are so polarized over this issue? Is that it? I aimed nothing at white people. There was no cry of 'the white devil is oppressing the human race' on my part. I didn't look for anything to offend me in the movie. I went to see Transformers to be surprised, to be part of the experience of seeing my childhood icons break box-office records. I went to go see Transformers kill each other for about two and a half hours, and see if Michael Bay's filmmaking techniques had gotten any better. On the one hand, I was pleased. On the other, well, it's Michael Bay. In the middle of all that, I see a handful of characters, who didn't really offend me all that much, but I can see why they would offend someone else. It really is that simple. See? That's how over myself I really am. Seriously: there is a huge camp of people who went to see the movie, saw nothing wrong and laughed their asses off. There is a much smaller camp of people who went to see the movie who hate Michael Bay and are goint to complain about anything they see in his movies. And then there is a true microcosm within a microcosm, the people who went to see the movie and saw it objectively--not with this manic 'TRANSFORMERS ROTF IS AWESOME AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT GO AWAY' giddiness that leaves no room for an opposing viewpoint, and not with this oppressive 'BAY RAPED/IS RAPING MY CHILDHOOD ALL OVER AGAIN' mentality that sucks the life out of any conversation-but just as it was: a movie, and a far from perfect one that contained imagery and dialogue that could (and did) push the buttons of quite a few people. I didn't look for any issue. I deal with ENOUGH huge issues everyday. It was right there on the screen. For the whole world to see. My god, you're spending more time doing exactly what you claim others are doing (looking for something to start an argument over/making problems where there were none) without even pausing to take a breath and look at this one salient point. You're the one calling people racist. Who's adding fuel to the fire here?

There's a fourth way to represent non-whites, BTW (why do you consider the term to be parenthetical? Or racist? You decry political correctness, but you dance around the fact and throw your arms up when I make mention of non-whites. It's literally just a direct description. Why are you still taking that personally?) that you failed to take note of: as human beings, with the same problems and hopes and dreams and heartbreaks that the rest of us take for absolute granted.

I merely sought to explain why some people would find the stereotyping offensive. In this film, in any other film, in any other media. If that's fodder for people to start taking it to heart in all the wrong ways, then, hey. That's predictable, too.

Hi. Just joined today. Nice to meet everyone.

I haven't seen the movie yet (and no, I don't mind spoilers otherwise I wouldn't highlight them and read), but from what I've been reading here and everywhere else, it seems the twins I was looking forward to liking aren't going to be my cup of tea (so sad because I usually love bickering twins! And Hasbro, how about twin femmes that bicker sans girly colors?). For me, it's not really the stereotyping because no one can get away from stereotypes especially when it seems that's all people ever want to look at, but how badly written the stereotype is and how little CD (character development) the twins recieved.

There's a way to use stereotypes and comic relief character without alienating or insulting audiences... it's called writing lessons.

saying "non-whites are raging about this" (or words to that effect) is just a way of directing criticism at white people and implying that everyone except white people are victims; all caused by white people - the term "non-whites" doesn't offend me in any way at all

the "fourth way to represent non-whites" ie: "honestly" falls under one of the 2 stereotype options: negative or positive - except the ones that fall into the background like most boring characters of any colour in any movie do - deal with it

let's put the boot on the other foot here - does anyone here seriously think everyone in the UK acts & sounds like ratchet in the movie? i know i'm nothing like him but i don't take offence because (unlike the people playing the race card) i know it is just a movie

political correctness is destroying the western world just as much as racism

They were anoying. They were done in bad tast :tfpuke They wern't meant to offend any one. Just be two comicaly(anoyingly) stupid transformers.

I'm a bit tired of all the fuss being mad about this...

What about the Terrorcon Blot, mister?

In the episode "Everything that Glitters", Blot had a few speaking lines that sounded like he was chewing broken glass and drinking mud.

They were anaoying to the extreme. I didn't like them personaly, but another transfan I know loved them. I don't think they were meant to be offensive, just amusing to childeren.

I'm not going to let them ruin the movie for me. It was in bad taste, thats all

If anything should ruin the movie for anyone it's how easily Devastator was defeated :tfsad

Devastator was taken out way to fast to be this hyped up Decepticon villain. The Contructicons, Sideswipe, Arcee and her girls added nothing to the story and the potential for character development was lost. Even Mudflap survived the "Big Bad Devastator."
