Transformers Live Action movie design thought process!

And regarding the color red not doing so well via CGI, yes, I heard that argument. But I am not convinced of that argument.

well i'm sorry to be the one breaking it to you but you're wrong

I'm wrong because Michael Bay says I'm wrong?

Or because you actually have evidence proving it?

You're mostly wrong because he said red is hard to film IRL, not that red was difficult to CGI.

In that case, I stand corrected regarding my comment about red being difficult to CGI.

Which actually makes me more adamant that Prime could have done without the flames, Ironhide should have been red, and that the upcoming Sideswipe should also be red.

Bay didn't say that red was impossible to film well, did he?

He said it was - IIRC - very, very difficult because they have to be lit just right in order to have the color accurately represented in the final product, and lighting one while it's moving is especially difficult.

And, truth is, if you look at, like, car commercials and stuff, they very rarely feature red cars. :shrug

maybe all you guys who are telling Hobbes to take a joke, should lighten up too. you did post this in the discussion forum, which would imply you wanted to discuss it. not just point and laugh. because, hobbes is right. that is what INH is for.

Sure.

However, they do film red things all the time.

I know Bay is all about crazy action shots, which may make filming a speeding red car more difficult than, say, a walking woman wearing a red dress.

But I still stand by my argument, because:

1) I am a stickler for source material accuracy or "akkurat" or how ever it tends to be spelled here (I want to note here than I am not a so called "geewunner"...I fully recognize the flaws G1 had and my favorite series is the Beast Wars and I thoroughly enjoyed Galaxy Force). If Bay's movie was based on Beast Wars and he made BW Megatron brown because he had issues filming purple, I would raise the same objections.

2) I think Bay could have at least tried to rise to the challenge. Imagine if he had pulled it off.

I already said that I understand why the movie designs are the way they are. The G1 cartoon aesthetic would not work for the live action movie. And I think Prime and the Autobots were well done, except for the colors. I had more issues with the Decepticons, primarily because of Megatron's and Starscream's appearance weren't even close to their G1 counterparts, and the use of the names.

EDIT: I will say that the movie aesthetic (while required for a successful movie) doesn't appeal to me as toys. Just my personal taste.

Sure.

Well, it's about the specific reflective surface of a car. It's not just "red" in general.

That's cool. Like I said, no big deal to me either way. If it helps, I would've preferred you got your wish on the colors thing because then we wouldn't have to have ghey internet discussion about it. But, hey, here we are.

2) I think Bay could have at least tried to rise to the challenge. Imagine if he had pulled it off.

It would've been cool. But time on a movie set is money, and the extra time put into shooting and reshooting a red pick-up over a black one or a full red semi over one that's mostly blue is less money left over for effects and stuff. Would it have been worth it to you to have a red Ironhide, but less Ironhide robot screentime?

I'm just saying, I get that you weren't completely satisfied with the final product, but it's not like he was being lazy. He had to make some hard calls to get the production done in a feasible way. You might disagree with those calls (I personally wouldn't have minded him scrapping Anthony Anderson's and using his fee to make you happy with a red truck) but we got the product we got.

And with that having been said, I have no reasons to offer as to why Jazz and Ratchet aren't white except that maybe two white robots wouldn't have been as visually interesting...but why both had to be a different color is beyond me.

But is it really worth getting worked up over now? Is complaining about the final product two years later productive? If you don't dig the product, put it behind you and move on.

Life's too short.

That's why Santa Claus is always blue in movies.... wait a second....

:tflaugh You're like eight posts late on the "not everything red" discussion, P-C.

Read the post right above yours.

I'd go ahead and give up guys. Hobbes ability to dismantle an argument is to powerful for the internet.

Okay, since this seems to have progressed to an actual discussion, I'll pose these two questions (forgive me because I skipped about a page of this because I didn't want read you guys' argument about it and stuff).

1. Why was the repaint of the Ironhide toy blue (and FAB grey) instead of red? I don't mind his color in the movie, just his lighting and face, from a visual standpoint.

2. Hobbes, and anyone else, (and I ask this sincerely) why do you like Movie's Starscream's design so much? For the life of me I don't get it.

Please note: these are honest questions---I'm not trying to insult or play the fool.

:lock

I think it's time.
