New Looks At MP-08 Grimlock, Solves Height Issue?

Recommended Posts

Oh, so that's what that picture was supposed to signify. I was completely baffled.

I was tentative to use the dino-legs as a comparison, especially given the recently revealed extendo-ness of them. I have no clue which is which, and guessing wrong could really throw off a calculation.

There it is. Nothing left to argue about. Grim is roughly the size of CC UM, and MP Starscream.

Did I necessarily want a 13"-15" Grimlock?

Well, for scale with Prime, and for the money?...Yes.

For those that argue it's too big for a collection, I'd point them to any statue collector's collection. Those pieces get enormous. Serious pieces (ones not intended for children) belong in serious collections.

And considering there have only been 3 (non-repaint) releases in the whole line, they're not really commanding too much space.

If this thing was $80-$100, I'd say, ce la vie, and Grim could just tower over the Classics voyagers.

But for $140, this is lame.

I don't know what you guys are getting all phaggy about. The MP scale here between Prime and Grimlock seems to be the same as the scale of the original G1 toys.

Well, that I kind of understand. If they were going for toy accuracy, then they could just use their G1 toys. Scale-accuracy to the animation makes a lot more sense since the MPs (other than Screamer) are going for animation accuracy.

But like I said, I personally don't care either way.

I think that MP Prime definitely went for show accuracy. MP Megatron... eh I dunno, they pretty much nailed the alt mode and the robot mode suffered for it (just like the toy).

Where I think fans are being shortsighted is by obsessing about Grimlock's height while neglecting to take into consideration the fact that his alt mode is a giant fatass. He has a lot more girth than any of the other MPs, and that's going to add to his overall mass.

To expect Grimlock to have significantly greater mass than the other MPs is fantasyland thinking IMO. Also keep in mind that MP Starscream's size was determined by the length of his alt mode -- 30 cm, the same as the heights of MP Prime and Megatron. Perhaps MP Grimlock is 30 cm tip to tail, I don't know. But it just seems really silly for there to be all of this fanbitchery over something as insignificant as this. It looks to be a fantastic figure, but that's getting lost in all the :argh JMO

A - At this point, no amount of fanbatchery should surprise you. ;)

B - I always thought the line was going for toon accurate, hence the axe, mace, matrix, archeville, kremzeek, energon saber, serving tray, etc.. accessories.

C - For $40 dollars more than the other MPs, I DID expect it to be $40 worth bigger and "massier."

D - Considering this is the last line that some people (i.e. myself) really collect, I don't find it that insignificant.

Again, it's a cool toy (for $100), but it's also kind of cementing the MPs as a "pick and choose" line of collectibles that won't look at all uniform displayed together.

Because of the difference price points in the kiddie lines, you can usually kind of get around that, but here you're only getting one representation per character, supposing to be the ultimate, iconic one, and I think this falls short.

...no pun intended.

If the focus is on the individual characters, then let it be on the individual characters. Don't worry about how they all look in a lineup. As you said, MP Starscream already shot that idea to hell anyway.

The price increase might also be an adjustment based on cost of materials, production and shipping... as well as perceived value.

I don't mean to imply BTW that the MPs haven't been designed with the cartoon in mind. Obviously there's both that and the toys influencing the designs. But some MPs lean less toward the cartoon than others IMO.

I'm OK with it being a "pick and choose" line (I didn't pick MP05 for instance).

I'm sure Tomy would echo Hasbro's sentiments about not expecting someone to buy every single release in a particular line, which is why they're trying to develop products which best fits a set of requirements, but said requirements vary according to the character.

I kind of think of the MP line as being a treat for fans of characters, as opposed to completists. Like, if you're a Grimlock fan, I don't see any way that you aren't spooging your pants over this guy. It's less about "gotta catch em all" and more about just making each one as awesome as possible.

which is kinda what you said
