Starscream’s Rise in Transformers Movie Sequel

Recommended Posts

The comics from IDW are, but I think we can blame Hasbro licensing fees for some of that cost.

Also, the cover stock for thier comics is higher, as is the quality of paper. And, other than hasbro ads at the back, there are NO advertisements in the issue.

He bastardized and butchered a good deal of what made Transformers cool

Robots that turn into vehicles and fight?

I thought the Movie Prequal comics were ok, the adaptation didn't suck worse than any other movie adapt. I'll probably try the first issue of this and see what it is, but I'm not expecting too much.

@ ItsStarscream – I agree with the vast majority of the points you have raised in this thread and I congratulate you on how well you have debated them. Bay remains in my opinion a cinamatic pornographer, prefering to offer his audience visual ‘money shots’ at the expense of characterisation and story telling. TF was lowest common denomanator filmaking and after taking away the awe of seeing giant robots transforming and fighting on the cinema screen, we are left with an empty shell of a movie - ‘all style and no knickers’.

We part company on the TF designs, which I thought, faces aside, were fairly well realised – if inpractical for warrior robots. I’m hoping the forthcoming comic can put flesh on the bones of Stacream’s under-developed character, atoning for Bay’s short comings as a storyteller.

gonna have to agree with ISS again. the autobots had more humanoid, yet extraterrestrial-enough faces to be ok, yet the Decepticons all looked a lot like bugs or monsters. that doesnt even make much sense in the storyline. they're all the same race, are they not? factions arent types of species. and i think someone misinterpreted it as that. in all the cartoons, they werent made to look different, yet we related to the autobots fine enough.

i dont hate the movie, in fact i enjoyed it. but munky still makes me cringe when i see him. the worst Starscream adaptation of all time. and clearly he wasn't what made the movie so successful.

yeah yeah him attacking the F-22s was an "awesome" scene, disregarding how ridiculous that fat lummox looks knifing through the air like that. not to mention it's nothing impressive considering ANY of the cons could take out weak earth vehicles.

and the design doesn't look aerodynamic in the slightest. fat will NEVER equal aerodynamic. i dont know how the design team came to that conclusion.

what REALLY irks me is how if you listen to the audio commentary on the DVD or watch the making-of segments, bay claims he responded to the negativity about Megatron's face and changed it. he also mentions almost every complaint we've had. BB not being a VW, Prime with flames, and Megatron's face. yet there was not a SINGLE mention about "Starscream" being fat, ugly, and only 1 color. it makes no sense to me how he couldn't have seen that at all.

The Decepticons look insectoid and whatnot was done to make them look more alien and evil looking. In that sense, it worked quite well.

As for Bay not hearing about Starscream... It certainly is possible. Nowhere near as much Starscreaming about that happened compared to BB not being a VW, etc. a lot of Starscreaming, sure, but not enough.

they didnt need to look that way in ANY of the cartoons, yet it was very easy to tell they were evil

Other than the red eyes, not by default. Only when they put menacing looks on their faces did they look evil.

they didnt need to look that way in ANY of the cartoons, yet it was very easy to tell they were evil

In the cartoon they were modeled after pre-existing toys which had been pieced together from different lines. Many of the 'Con figures (like Soundwave and Megatron) were good guys in the line they were taken from. The rest (like Starscream) were soulless piloted mechs. Of course they wouldn't look evil based on that.

But it makes perfect sense that they would make them evil if they were designing them anew, as previous Transformers lines have shown us...or do you think it's a coincidence that Hasbro made all the insects and reptiles villains and the mammals and birds heroes in Beast Wars?

For everything* Michael Bay did to the Transformers, there's a precedent of it happening somewhere else in the franchise first, and no one complained about it then. But suddenly Michael Bay's name is on it and it's all, "You can't do that! It's not Transformers!"

*Everything. Including humans killing ridiculously powerful evil robots.

maybe so, but fat meat grinder-face sasquatch is NOT Starscream, and no, that was NEVER done before Bay came along.

and what about A/E/C? that wasnt based on toys yet still retained the same face design

*sigh*

That's missing the point. Characters named Starscream have been muted colors and without the ability to smirk and even kinda "plump" before. Michael Bay just did them all at once and injected a healthy dose of animal based design (which the franchise has a strong history of, too).

I get you don't like, and I'm not asking you to. But let's not pretend that anything in this movie is completely out of left field and not in line with what's happened in the franchise before, good or bad.

those links gave me a thought

munky should've had the name "Hellscream". since he's a brutal viscous beast who kinda acts like Starscream. another miss by the writers.....
