Biggest Transformers toy flop of 2007?

Recommended Posts

Another thing that really hurts with Scorponok is that the toy is really, really suckful if you don't have Blackout. I got Scorponok first... and the toy just blew all kinds of chunks - it still does - but when I got Blackout and combined the two together, I could see that it was a fun gimmick. Scorponok is a neat add-on accessory for Blackout, but as an action figure in its own right, it's really bad.

I disagree, I think it's a well done action figure. Someone made a good comparison to the Robot Replicas. I don't own any of them but from looking at them in stores the only one that has quality matching Scorponok is Frenzy. Otherwise I think Scroponok blows the rest of them out of the water.

As a transforming toy Scorponok isn't all that great. But as a regular figure, like the Robot Replicas, it rules IMO. I don't know how the prices compare, but I think Scorponok is bigger anyway. I like Scorponok better than the first delux Bumblebee.

Frenzy was tons of crap surrounded by :fail!

He has Horrible articulation, and what little he does is in weird spots, the detailing is only barely competent, and he is fragile as all hell.

The Robo Reps are horrible in every way.

If you glued Scorpy's legs together he would be a better "action figure" than any Robo Rep.

I know its been said before but: Would Scorponok really get all the hate that he does if he simply didnt transform at all?

Another Question: Is he approx. to scale with the car bots?

I think that Scorpy is really fun despite the questionable robot mode. I'm always having a blast rolling it on my desk watching the claws and torso bits spin... That reminds me of the movie a lot.

They should not have given him a robot mode since he obviously didn't have one in the movie. They should have just made a basic size figure that came with blackout that had the rolling feature and better tail articulation.

I still think Scorponok is really cool. Why complain about a feature that you don't need to use (i.e. its transformation)?

Dude, if TF fans didn't complain they wouldn't know what to do with themselves would spontaneously combust.

Because we had to pay for it! (money talks and you-know-what walks ;)).

I agree with Hot Rod - had they made it at a Basic (Scout Class) price point - re: half the price of a Deluxe, then I wouldn't dislike the figure as much. Scorponok is just NOT worth the Deluxe price point. It's a matter of not getting much value for my dollar.

As for the Robot Replicas - as Hunter Rose said, they're not good toys anyway. I picked up Robot Rep. Decepticon Frenzy, and transformation aside, I honestly think that FAB Decepticon Frenzy is better that Robot Rep Decepticon Frenzy! There's more attention to detail in FAB Frenzy's robot mode - Robot Rep Frenzy looks like an oversized (and more importantly, overpriced) PVC. Mind you, I got my Robot Rep Frenzy on sale - so glad I didn't pay full price for that sucker. And I've never been interested in getting any of the other Robot Reps either.

So yeah, it's not saying much when you say that Scorponok is better than the Robot Replicas. But in defence of the Robot Replicas, as overpriced as they are (I don't see why they should cost the same as a Deluxe when they don't transform) they're not intended to be part of the "mainstream" movie toy line, but more as a "side line."

If we compare Scorponok to other Transformers in his class - like other Deluxes, and IMO Scorponok is the worst.

I like Scorponok better than the first delux Bumblebee.

Although 70s Bumblebee has its flaws, it is a far more ambitious design. Remember that HasTak were trying to make him transform from a realistic 70s Camaro to a movie-accurate robot mode; not totally accurate (none of the movie toys can be), but as realistic as they can. And given that, Bumblebee still comes off with a more complex and well-engineered transformation (with automorphing) with a reasonably decent looking and fairly movie-accurate robot mode. It's not the best Deluxe figure in the movie line, but I feel that it was worth the money I spent on it (just).

Scorponok on the other hand - considering that the movie has no robot mode, is a considerably less ambitious endeavour. HasTak designers had, in some aspects, greater freedom over how to design the robot mode as they weren't restricted by having to make the robot mode look movie-accurate. Their main restrictions were to keep the alt mode movie-accurate and the spinning-rotor gimmick. But in spite of this greater creative freedom, we ended up with what is a really poorly designed robot mode. The transformation is ridiculously simple (to the point where there are Legends that have more complex transformations) with an ungainly looking robot mode. I just don't feel that the money I paid for this figure was as well spent as with any of the other movie Deluxes.

Lemme put it in another way - if Scorponok didn't appear in the movie, who would've bought this toy at the Deluxe price point? I wouldn't have. I very reluctantly bought Scorponok and I gotta say the sole reason I bought it was because he's in the movie.

People bag out on some of the other non-movie movie figures, especially the cycloptic Decepticon 'drones,' but I gotta say that Scorponok is even beneath the level of Swindle or Payload (personally I kinda like Dreadwing ;)).

And confirming that Payload, to the general public, was the biggest flop: My target just marked down Deluxes to $6.09 US.

I strongly think Payload is the cause, as the pegs (six of them) are full, and there's only three toys that AREN'T him...

Yeah, but if Scorponok was never in the movie, I reckon that he'd be pegwarming just as bad (if not worse) than Payload.

Lemme put it in another way - if Scorponok didn't appear in the movie, who would've bought this toy at the Deluxe price point?

Me. I love the gimmick. But ok, we get it, you hate the figure. Next topic?
