BotCon '07 Games of Deception Set Preview: Dirge

Recommended Posts

BTW, found it. And this suggests, the possibility at least, that it the set may drop and end up being findable for a lot less than $300, for some short opportune time at least. So sometimes the market can work both ways.. In the hypothetical scenario of the '07 set hitting this same price of $125, that'd avg out to $25 per figure -- considerably more tolerable to many, I think.

I doubt the '07 will drop in price - unlike the '05 set in that comic, it actually has figures people want in it.

The only odd ones out are Megatron, Rodimus/Hot Rod & Grimlock, unless they got creative with them.

Rodimus could easily be repainted into Sideswipe, Wildrider or Deadend. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if one of other non-set BotCon repaints was one of the latter two.

The unfortunate thing is: if there were no Botcon, I'm sure all of these guys would eventually (eventually) have been released by Hasbro. But now that they're con exclusives, we'll never see them on pegs, EVER.

Where're Energon Thundercracker and Skywarp? Starscream was considered one of the better Energon molds.

HEY

Here's a good question

Why no toon-accurate/ehobby'd Astrotain? That should have been surefire.

There are going to be a couple of non-set exclusives as well. This is one of the guesses.

He's already had one repaint... I bet we'll see at least one more. Still, point taken.

NEXT YEAR'S SET'D

Actually, next year's set will be movie toys with G1 paintjobs - some with G1 heads.

Which begs the question as to why they produced Magnus in the first place, but whatever.

I'm sure that they factor in a certain number of repaints per new molds in order to recoup development costs... Six of the Classics (two of which are Voyager class) had one-use-only molds; only one was remolded and only three of them were repainted. Which isn't really that high of a ratio, all things considered.

Not that I'm doubting that Hasbro will eventually repaint every one of them a zillion times...

One use only?

Here were all of their repaint options:

Bumblebee = Cliffjumper

Starcream = Skywarp, Thundercracker, Sunstorm, generic seekers....

Ramjet = Dirge & Thrust (I would have accepted straight repaints of the mold for $10 a piece)

Astrotrain = toon accurate Astrotrain

Mirage = Drag Strip

Optimus Prime = Ultra Magnus (well, because they did that one)

The only odd ones out are Megatron, Rodimus/Hot Rod & Grimlock, unless they got creative with them.

So yeah, they had plenty of options to recoup costs without screwing the majority of the fanbase.

I'm not saying that that's all they could have done, just that that's all they did do. I'm sure that they knew that they would have had to leave something for Botcon, since the G1 characters are SO distinctive that you can't get away with WTF repaints as easily... at least, IMO.

The unfortunate thing is: if there were no Botcon, I'm sure all of these guys would eventually (eventually) have been released by Hasbro. But now that they're con exclusives, we'll never see them on pegs, EVER.

not to ratchet up the collective angst or anything <_<

Gotcha.

It just really looks like a slap in the face to fans especially when you consider all the other combinations of characters they could have used to make up the 2007 set. I don't mind too much about Thrust and Dirge, but they really could have used someone else instead of Thundercracker.

But at this point I think we are talking in circles lol

BTW I just realized that I left Jetfire off my original list. Oops
