Collection Database

I think it's a great idea & if there's any tedious data-inputting that needs doing I'd be more than happy to help.

The counting system? Just have each TF "package" as 1 item & a choice of 2 tick-boxes: Complete/Incomplete (the proper "counting" system could be implemented later & constantly updated if Goki ran annual "counting system" polls) :thumb

I'm not gonna run the polls annually. Aside from the fact that it's just too much effort, it would also render the data useless for making year by year comparisons. For example, I can't very well compare the average TF collection size in 2006 to 2007 if for both those years different methods of counting were used.

I'm just gonna stick with the system we made last year. I'm not asking people to use it for their personal counts, just for the purposes of the survey so that we can try to get consistent results. It's a very much "for the purposes of this survey please use this system of counting" method, that's all. As you all know, even I don't entirely agree with the survey system, but I will use it when counting for the poll.

Like I said, the main reason why I don't want to change it now is because I want to be able to observe and compare statistical changes over a long period of time (e.g.: annually), and the data would be worthless if it were gathered under differing conditions every year. Already the 2005 survey I held is unusable because it was gathered under a different system, hence I cannot compare the 2005 and 2006 results, whereas I do want to be able to compare the 2006 results with 2007, 2008 and so forth.

I can't read the offtopic for some reason.

@siburke, the problem is that if such a database were to be created, it should meet the needs of people who wish to buy, sell or trade items. Which is why my design took the idea to have individual bots, parts, books, whatever. That way say you need Chromedome's guy. You look in the items for sale/trade, and it will show those items that people marked as available for trade in that screen. You would even be able to search for it, using drop down menus. Of course an option can be included to limit the interface for people who do not wish to do any of that business. In fact the original design was that basic members could only track their collection, and premium members could BST. The fee was like $1 a month or something like that, I can't remember.

The offtopic-tags are broken, but you can still view the post by quoting it though. :thumb

So a bit like TFU.info with each accessory listed individually, but with added tick-boxes? Makes sense. Like I said before - anything I can do to assist I'd be happy to oblige. :tfgrin

This serves a greater purpose than your poll, though, Goki (as outlined by the others). As was mentioned, trades could be easily searched for. Since everyone would have their database linked to their account, I could just search the database for "Bugly" and get any entry related to the character.

Then I could look at which ones are for trade, and which are not. If one wasn't for trade, maybe I could beg a member to add it to their trade tray. Also saves me a LOT of hassle updating a trades thread. Just clicking checkboxes for all this data that has already been entered.

It also gives us the (potential) power to have the most comprehensive list of Transformers toys made, because a lot of people would be involved, and there could be a forum section dedicated to "this is missing". People like siburke could just troll said thread, and we would be in good shape.

It certainly does, and that's great, but in all fairness, creating a communal database was never the intention of my polls. I merely wanted to gather statistical data to compare trends - like conduction an international census on TF collection sizes.

Your idea sounds like it has potential and wish you luck in your endeavour. :thumb

I'm lost... :wtf

I was saying if we had a "these figures are missing from the database" area of the forums, and people like you had rights to enter the stuff, you could just troll that area and add everything that you see in these threads to the database. Thus making it (eventually) the most complete Transformers toy database.

You mean trawl the area?

Actually, maybe troll is the right word...

I thought you meant this kind of troll:

Gotcha now! Sound cool to me. :thumb
