If there was no movie, what would you think of the Toys?

Recommended Posts

I'm just sayin there is nothing special about this line. Nothin new. Including the ugly heads. Toys were a secondary concern in this line and I think it shows. They're ok. Actually some of my favorite designs in this line are the non appearing ones.

As it should be.

Who gives a fuck about toys. The movie is what we should be caring about.

there's gonna be plenty of non-movie-looking TF toys soon enough.

Blast Processing was new too. What the hell does "automorphing" mean anyway. I'm not expecting anything that spiffy from every new line, but people talk about these in such glowing terms and I just don't see it. I feel like we're all in such a rush not to be movie hatin' fanboys thate we're seeing to much in these.

I agree in principal Pete. But, uh, this whole topic is about the toys sans movie... Kinda the point really...

Well.... as much as I agree with you on a lotta those, I will also say that this line (and the movie designs themselves) are an aesthetic departure from what we've seen before. And clearly quite a few people have been liking that. And these seem to be fairly show-accurate (or accurate to their source designs), although I suppose that could be said of the toylines for the more recent series.

I'm not sure what "non appearing ones" refers to..

Swindle, & wreckage. Two original deluxe molds amongst a couple of others I can't think of.

I think you've said it best. Toys this line may be bust asthetically they Imo are a huge step up from what we've seen before hand. The added complexity/detail into how they transform could explain why Hasbro has introduced the Fab line. I pesonally see no use for it seeing as the deluxes/voyagers are already well enough excecuted on an internediate level the Fabs are a nice throw in for younger fans without having to dumb down the the whole line.

Take this as you will but the simplicity of the fabs from what I've seen are on the same level as the Classics figures. Nobody really stops to notice because they're all G1 & character nostalga seems to be all some fans really care about. True as that is for me I still enjoy the line for what it is. I'm just really happy Hasbro is taking the movie line just a little bit further in authenticy & in a more grown up direction.

Faces aside (understandable from a fan's perspective I guess) I can't really see what's not to like about any of these. These are easily the most realistic alts/articulate/detailed bots since RID. RID accomplished awsome alt modes but sacrificed the bot modes horribly making a lot of them mostly shell formers, & fragile. One of hugest complaints since picking up collecting again has been fragile transformers which feel like they're going to either snap or break each time they're transformed. Probably one of the reasons I really liked the fisher price bulky feel of the A/E/C, & Classic lines.

The movie line looks to be the best of both in one nifty package.

*I hate how this is all speculation upon everything I've seen or heard.* :redface

The real value/worth of any toy IMO can only truly be determined when it's in hand.

Automorphing means that some steps of the transformation complete themselves through an internal system of gears when other steps in the transformation are performed, creating the illusion of many pieces and panels moving at once as they do on screen in the movie.

I don't know if it'll be cool or lame or someplace in between, but it is new. I'll judge it in June.

As it stands, I don't see anything wrong with being excited about the toys now, there are undeniably cool things about the line to be excited about.

If they do end up mostly sucking once I've got them in hand, that'll be the time to complain.

I may totaly change my mind when it's in hand. I think my preview prime is much better in person than it was online. That said it is a rocklord. I still like toys to have play in them even though I don't play per se anymore. I'm gonna pick up some of the Fabs actually. I'll pick up most of the new line too. But "more adult" doesn't mean much to me.

But "more adult" doesn't mean much to me.

And that right there is all you really need to say...

That explains where you come from and what you mean. To others, they need the "more adult" feel/look/vibe. I mean to me, these toys are borderline awesome and odd/iffy, depending on the toy. I'm honestly more concerned with the movie than any accompanying toy product.

But if this line was done without the movie...

First Off - I'd be like "WTF is going on here?" Because it would be a huge design difference in the face and overall body designs. It would come off as a weird G1 + TransTech Hybrid. One that would make me go "Huh? I dunno about this." And in the long run probably take me a while to come around to.

Secondly - I agree with others that the toys themselves are a step up in better execution of being a TF toy with good alt modes and designs without compromising the articulation. They feel a bit more grown up - particularly Voyager Ironhide, Ratchet, & Blackout. That would probably win me over to some of them - that and their Tech Specs (which are a big selling point to me some times).

But overall - without the movie - I don't know how I would accept these. It would just feel weird going from A/E/C & Classics to this, without the understanding of the movie being behind the designs. It just would be a huge jump in visual vibe for me.

I think part of my problem is I always display in robot mode so ugly heads is a big problem to me. Kind of a deal breaker for me to really like them.

DM is really on track in my opinion.

Automorphing is new.

Or, at least as new as anything else we've seen in the last ten years or so. Was there something else you were expecting from the line?

Automorphing is no more a gimic then it was with Cybertron Primus. On most it seems to just be the legs or chest opening, head popping up. Hardly worth marketing seeing as it's probably hardly involved in the transformation scheme. Guess it looks pretty on the packaging. Seriously though I was afraid this line would be Topspin/Runamuck/Runabout all over again. I'm fine with people liking the idea of seld transforming toys but I personally hate it. Transformers as I explained to a friend just this past weekend who didn't get why I'd even bother at this age are basically three really kickass toys in one. A toy vehicle, an articulate robot, & a nifty puzzle in between. What isn't kickass about that & that's how I want my toys to stay for the most part.

The only thing that's changed in the last odd number of years is the designers at Hasbro are getting smarter with the designs while still being able to mantain the same scale/size classes/price point. You may not see the movie figs as a huge improvement however when considering the evolution between the movie figs today & the Armada/Energon figs not too long ago it quickly becomes very noticable. Cybertron was a better line than A/E, Classics was on par & the movie figs are the next step in that evolution.

Look at Bonecrusher compared to the Cybertrons Landmine. No comparison.

As for gimicks. The leaders may have flashy lights/sounds but aside from the Automorph feature the gimics about the same as Classics. Launching missils, & rolling wheels. Okay not really a gimick but at least they don't link up or plug into something.

Ironhide and Bonecrusher make the entire line for me.

Observation: The movie supporters seem to generally agree that the FABs are the most pointless line. Whereas Prime-Collector isn't bothered by them, and I find them the most appealing of the various movie lines.

It just occurred to me that, were I to see these toys without any context of the movie, my first thought would probably be to wonder if Tomy was trying to re-brand/merge in some entirely separate toyline. Would you guys say that the Happywell Roadbots would look more like traditional TFs than do the movie toys? And that's without the context of the movie?
