Ultra Magnus (G1)

Recommended Posts

I've always liked Magnus, as all the Car-Robo/Convoy-based TFs, that I like in alt mode as much or more than in robot mode. I have both versions and prefer the rubber-wheeled, painted one.

About the cartoon, Magnus also shot a missile at an energy jail door in The Killing Jar. The missile did not explode and he observed it with utter disbelief...

G1 Ultra Magnus is okay, not great, not terrible. The real shining example of Ultra Magnus is the G2 Battle Convoy repaint. I love that toy!

lots of words

holy crap, people! I was just sharing my 20-year-old opinion, not writing a dissertation. I'm sorry if you don't like the fact that I thought UM's legs / face looked ghey and he had too many parts. geez

And Goki, you really need to learn how to respond to a post without creating a Wiki article. Of course I know about the gestalts and Metroplex and bla bla bla. You'll notice that I didn't list any of them. Just because I don't mention something doesn't mean that I'm ignorant of it.

:tflaugh i've been waiting all morning for that

Bought Kup even though it came with Wheelie because I wanted Kup so badly.

Then I bought another Wheelie (the original red faced one) in a Mini-Bot lot because I needed Pipes, Hubcap and Outback. I do not really mind owning them. The vehicle mode is neat (allthough the robot mode sucks monkey balls) and he is so small that he really does not take up much space.

Besides I count both versions of Wheelie as 2 seperate Transformers. :tftongue

I don't have a problem with Wheelie. I actually like the character. He's funny. He is also very original. I never understood why people bash on him so much.

It would have been perfect, IMO, if it didn't use the pale blue on the face. It just doesn't work with the darker blue on the rest of the figure. Clearly, that paint job was based on UM in his armor, as colored in the cartoon, and yet the head has the light blue color that the inner head of the UM robot toy version did. Just a pet peeve of mine.

As far as UM goes, the toy is wonderful. It has so much more play value than Prime, due to the sweet battle armor trailer. I picked one up, incomplete, and with no ramps/shins, and still, I love it. It is a great looking piece. I really want to get my hands on the Diaclone colored version someday!

And his head with the inexplicable eye holes that lined up with nothing (making him look dead or something).

21 years later, Classics Jetfire's eyes don't align properly with his helmet visor either. ;p

The difference is that Jetfire's "non lined up eyes" look cool (and his eyes ARE visible through the visor) while Ultra Magnus has deep dark pits that just scream "WHY". I mean, I can at least appreciate dark eyes when they light up...Unicron and Cyb Starscream, for instance. But Ultra Magnus's pits always seemed like an idea they wanted to do, changed their mind, and then said "woops, we forgot to remove that dumb "feature" on that toy" when it was sold in stores.

Ultra Magnus is why I'm glad the US rarely, RARELY featured stop motion animation for their toys. Takara pratically false advertised with their Ultra Magnus commercials, making his eyes LIGHT UP just to make him seem cooler!

Many commercials are like that.

I recall reading a review on Armada Unicron written by an angry dad who bought 2 for his kids for Christmas (one kid wanted it and talked his brother into getting one too). He had opened both (which is not really that smart, open one and it if does not meet expectations you can return the other without any hassle) to find out they were hard to transform (I kinda see that point) and were not as cool as they appeared to be.

Which I kinda get too. I mean for us collectors it was a like a dream come trough. Finally after 16 years, a Unicron toy that looked a lot (though not exactly) like the movie Unicron. We knew it tranformed into a planet (ok half a planet) and we did not care.

For a dad who spent $100 on two of those things only to find out that it was just a %^#! planet! But he also mentioned that his son heard Unicron talk on the commercial. (Again, we collectors understand the lack of voice chip. No one but Orson Welles' voice would suffice and I doubt Hasbro would be allowed to use it.)

But if that is true and Unicron was indeed "talking" in that commercial then that is flagrant false advertising. Much like Otto (from The Simpsons) visiting a store called "Stoner's Pot Palace" only to find they sell house hold goods.

The ad also has text at the bottom of the screen disclaiming the effect. We have shampoo ads here where the hair is digitally altered to "glisten" and they have text disclaimers at the bottom.
