Rattrap... what a dumbass. He wanted to be hardcore, but just sucked.

 

As a character, I mean. All of his action figures were sweet.

He never wanted to be hardcore. Rattrap enlisted as a member of a Maximal expeditionary mission - their primary purpose, to explore new worlds for colonisation. He never wanted to be a soldier. Bad enough that he and his pals were already involved in that nasty Protoform X incident, but when the Beast Wars erupted, Rattrap had no intention on becoming a soldier. Yes, he did challenge Optimus Primal's military leadership at the beginning, but for good reason - because Primal had no prior training/programming nor experience in military leadership. Big Convoy garnered more respect because although he also lacked leadership experience, unlike Primal, Big Convoy was a ranking officer in the Maximal military -- and most importantly, a highly decorated war hero. Optimus Primal is not.

 

So Optimus Primal had to earn the respect of his followers, particularly Rattrap and Dinobot - and earn their respect he did. And conversely Rattrap and Dinobot earnt respect from Primal too. Rattrap is extremely resourceful and charismatic - able to make rapid command decisions under extreme pressure. This is something not even Rhinox is capable of doing as well - Rhinox can make some decent individual decisions under pressure, but not so much leadership choices. Rattrap proved his mettle on several occasions as the Maximals' default commanding officer in Primal's absence -- a position appointed to him by Optimus Primal himself. After Rattrap's first stint as battlefield commander - in a fight to defend the Axalon from Predacons - even Dinobot had to give credit where credit was due and commended Rattrap's charisma; even apologising and retracting his earlier comments where he disputed Rattrap's leadership quality.

 

Furthermore, Rattrap was a very important character in Beast Wars. If you removed Rattrap from Beast Wars, continuity would be changed a lot. On the other hand, Wheelie is far more inconsequential. If you removed Wheelie from all the post-movie episodes, what would change?! So Ultra Magnus doesn't get a "birthday"... big freakin' deal. If you removed Rattrap there would be a very good chance that Megatron would have been able to return to with enough Energon reserves to conquer Cybertron (whereas ultimately Megatron was able to conquer Cybertron via cyber-biochemical warfare and using his Vehicons to take over what little resistance was left).

 

There is NO way in hell that you can even begin comparing a character as neat as Rattrap as someone as utterly insignificant to Transformers mythos as Wheelie. We only remember Wheelie because he was so useless.

 

And yeah, toywise there's no comparison. d:

Rodimus Prime was the weekest toy. He had no articulation and a crappy transformation.The original Oprtimus prime had better articulation and wasnt that much more back then. As a kid I fel that With Season 3 in general they started putting out crap and thought the fans would but a hunk of plastic because it had the Transformer label on it.

Seriously, I was never comparing him to Wheelie. Wheelie was always a plot filler, nothing more. Rattrap proved his worth on many, many, many, many, many, many more occasions than Wheelie...

But I agree, Rattrap did a lot of interesting things, and important, to boot. But sometimes, you know... I wanted to just say... WTF?

Additionally, rodimus couldn't make a decision without consulting 27 other autobots, and even THEN doubting his choice.
