People are okay with stuff that doesn't make sense if it's accepted convention. Like the "sound in space" stuff. It's a staple of most sci-fi movies and TV shows going way back, so nobody thinks about it. (In fact, when they *did* cut out the space-sound in "Serenity", it took me out of the movie because I was like "oh yeah, there's no sound in space" and then I was thinking about that instead of the movie.)

Transformers doesn't have any such history. This movie is really the brand's first big public splash (outside of the kid/fan universe), and it's going to establish a lot of conventions for the brand in the future.

Well, I have been viewing lots of negative feedback upon the new Transformers movie. What I do not understand is this. How could the fans become so pissed and so resentful against Michael Bay over a movie that none of these fans have even seen yet? The designs are new and highly advanced, I admit that. But why can't the fans just realize and face the facts that this movie WILL have characters designs completely different from the G1 designs? Why is it so impossible for them to accept the fact? I also found this video bashing Michael Bay and Don Murphy, who are the people involved in the creation of this film:

LOL Ridiculous......

Hell no. The upcoming TFs are some of the best I've seen in a long time - it deviates from all the manga crap we've been bombarded with in the last 6 years.

The "Magna" crap is not that bad. So far I only perferred RID and Cybertron out of the magna versions, nor do I have anything against the Japanese creators for conceiving those designs and concept. The movie versions, however, are going to be FAR better than any TF design I've personally I've ever seen for the most part. It will be a can of whoopass!

...

Wait, MICHAEL BAY IS DIRECTING THE TRANSFORMERS MOVIE?

I really don't care about the cars or the alt modes... truthfully, I only care about the characters of the Autobots and Decepticons. Seriously, I just want Optimus Prime to be Optimus Prime, and Megatron to enforces his ranks with fear, and Starscream to be a sniveling jerk. That's when I'll know this movie is good.

well the trailer looks sort of maybe ok.... scorponok still looks naf to me and the helicopter not sure who its supposed to be when it transforms looks naf..teh holograp kinda guy in the cockpit feels very terminatorish which i liked sort of..... prime dont look to bad....but i just dont see the storyline behind transformers coming through in this i think its gonna be like war of the worlds two..focusing around stupid humans again instead of the the main characters......i cant wait but am expecting dissapointment so can be pleawsently excited :)

Yeah, okay.

Though I get that vibe too this movie isn't just invaders from space against generic humans. There are autobots & Decepticons & instead of having zillions of ghey spaceships or uberghey tripods they transform into cool vehicles & chase each other around while the humans as it has always been since the earliest days of G1 are in the middle of it all.

That said this is a world apart from the Blotty WOTWs/Independence Day formula.

Again, that's either good or bad depending or your POV, but it tells me the designs are too abstract for the general moviegoer to associate with the Transformers.

I doubt it was the designs, I think what you witnessed had more to do with the fact that the "general moviegoer" attending a screening of Rocky Balboa probably isn't the target audience that's going to have a great deal of Transformers nostalgia in the first place.

I also think that selling the new Transformers movie using "nostalgia" probably isn't a very good idea in the first place anyway. The TFs had limited appeal to few over the age of nine during it's prime (ouch, sorry for the pun) and even today I'd say it has one of the narrowest fan-bases of any "major" sci-fi property. (Shoot, look at the demographics of this site: 99.9% male with 90% between the ages of 25-32.)

This is a movie based on a toy line. It has a big hill to climb in terms of brand legitimacy.

I was reading a thread over at TFW about audience reactions to the trailer and it surprised even me. Yikes. :tflaugh

What about the initial problem that fans had with this movie? Michael Bay himself, or specifically, the dreaded fear that Transformers would be a dumb, thumbs down action movie that doesn't have a good story. Character designs aside, Transformers being a typical, dumb action movie was and still is a legitimate concern.

It's not a legitimate concern to me because Transformers IS a big, dumb action cartoon.

Every time there's see a film adaptation, the fans are always concerned about "will it live up to the original". In this case I think we're okay.
