MP-03 Masterpiece Starscream review .....

Recommended Posts

While I didn't get those stress marks, I was afraid I would. When foldingthe wing assemblies up I had to pull them out to the sides (the joints clearly don't movesideways) to clear a tab that they were hung on. Scary stuff.

Did I do it incorrectly or is that just what you have to do?

As far as getting him/not getting him goes... It just depends on what you're looking for in a toy/action figure. I'm a Screamer fanboy and my SS shrine is the cornerstone of my collection. So while I don't like the color and will probably never transform him again, I'm glad I have him.

I think if you life the whole back assembly correctly you wont have to pull aginst the joints sideways.

the wings to slide out a bit to the sides

as for Trasnforming him - hes too damn fun not to.

I'd managed to catch my MP03 Starscream recently alongside Classics Op Prime.

I didn't see any stress marks on mine although the pinpoint on the backright wing was already broken when i'd opened it. :tfsad a minor problem to me really but he is cool though while floats on his stand pointing at my Alt. Shockblast/wave (ala 'Countdown to Extinction')

So he is worth as an adult toy & not so much to play with. :tfgrin

I'll wait till his Classics version comes in. :tflaugh

Pretty much sums up my view of MP03. First impression after finally getting my grubby hands on it was "Nice box, but why does it feel so light?". :tflaugh

Biggest dislikes about it are:

- paint on the shoulder/arm area is already scuffing after transforming for the first time.

- limited posability when standing it by itself (without the stand & base)

- lack of diecast.

Like someone alluded before, this is more of an Alternator as opposed to a Masterpiece figure; however, the intricacy on this figure is pretty amazing and definitely nothing to scoff at.

Sweet. Before I just wanted one, now I REALLY want one. Ok who has an extra and is willing to trade? See my offer I'm thinking of adding a couple of items to the bargaining table if someone can help me out.

Okay, so eventually I dove right in and transformed my MP Starscream, risking a heart attack the whole way. My observations:

- Building on what others have said, the instructions need some "half-steps". Thanks to the hidden clips and pegs and crap, there are a few points in the instructions where you have to kind of do the opposite of what the instruction says. Example 1: dislodging the wing sections from the body of the plane. The instructions just say to pull them up. But actually, you have to push them down to dislodge the little clip that holds them to the body, and THEN pull them up. Example 2: when you first pull the robot arms apart from under the plane. You sort of have to push them together first, as there are tiny hidden pegs holding them on to the robot legs. Scary stuff.

- Not a lot of "wow" moments for me during the transformation. Probably the most impressive part to me is how the nosecone goes through the body to wind up on the back. Don't recall seeing that before. And the way the "abs" start out as one blue chunk and split into two is pretty weird. And I like how the feet fold out, but actually they're a lot like MP Prime's (in the sense that they spin around and flatten against the leg for the altmode).

- I still feel like I'm missing some things. The robot mode has some pretty nasty seams, especially at the abs...they don't peg into the chest (AKA the cockpit), so you can see through his torso. Also, the red "pecs" don't attach to anything either; they're just held by stiff joints. (One of the joints on mine is crooked, so he's got a slanty man-boob. :/) Which brings me to my next point:

- Virtually every joint on this figure is hella stiff (well, except the fingers). It's a mixed blessing, as it allows him to hold poses better, but it also makes transformation that much more nerve-wracking.

- By attaching the hip-kibble to the legs, he can stand on his own pretty well actually. I've got him standing on top of my scanner. But from the side, he looks like he's wearing giant bellbottoms. (I just had an awful vision of him singing "In the Naaavy~")

- Not a lot of "wow" moments for me during the transformation. Probably the most impressive part to me is how the nosecone goes through the body to wind up on the back. Don't recall seeing that before.

:rofl

I agree with most of what you said - except to say that for me there were lots of wow moments.

i keep the kibble bits disconnected from the hips completely and only loosely snap them on in plane mode. I find the whole process is much easier if you just removed them completely while transforming.

I just got mine tonight and after reading through most of these pages I'm surprised no one mentioned the "Waspinator" decals. I would have thought all the BW fans would have been all over that reference.

Here is some comparison pics between my 1/48 Stealth (non Super Strike mode) vs MP Starscream.

They match up perfectly in Jet mode. I'll have to take Robot pics later.

I will say this, they feel like they both way the same.

more pics

and yes VF-1J S.S.S. is my MP Jetfire of course.

It's been mentioned before. I posted some where that it's a cool reference but backward and makes no real since. Waspinator with Starscream decals does but not the reverse. It's like a mental paradox to me. Since I know that Screamer existed and died before Waspy, I cant put those stickers on him. I guess If I could pretend that Screamer was a real jet and not relate him to G1, then I could do it......but I cant.
