a thought on beast machines

I never said BM never had character development, I said it was weak, at least, compared to BW.

Every character is faced with a crisis that affects them on a personal level, and also impacts the team they're a part of.

In the world of literary devices, that's called a "complication." It does not necessarily equate to character development, although complications may often be used as a catalyst for character development.

I mean, Optimus Primal? How is that not major character development?

As I said, nobody said that the show lacked character development. Optimus Primal certainly did have character development, but was it any good? Character development needs to follow a logical progression. I don't think Optimus Primal and Blackarachnia's character development was that bad... examples - IMHO - of poor char. development in BM would include Rhinox, Megatron and Silverbolt (and arguably Rattrap too). Even Scott McNeil complained about the way his character was being handled. These characters all underwent significant changes in their character without a seemingly logical transition to satisfactorily demonstrate why they had undergone such changes.

The only other TF character who changed more was Blackarachnia in BW, and that was mainly because they had her do a 180 when she ran into Silverbolt.

Well there's the difference - in BW, Blackarachnia's character change is well explained. The audience can see the gradual and logical transition in her character from villain to hero. Making a complete roundabout change in a character is fine, so long as it is justified within the story.

The most character develpment in G1 was when Spike got turned into the frankenstein robot

I disagree. There's plenty of character development in G1. 2 quick examples that come to mind: Carnivac and Grimlock (Furman's fav TF!)

I'd just like to mention that I'm not Galvasean.

And are you talking about changes in characters between BW and BM? 'Cuz I'm not. I could care less about BW.

I thought we were talking about the cartoons, so the comics don't count.

I don't recall saying a word of this.

I never type so legibly when drunk

Just watched the final episode last friday on ytv, and i was so irritated afterword, THIS ISNT TRANSFORMERS!

No kidding.

It was actually well written.

Sort of.  Compared to G1, hells yes.  I loved Beast Wars, I've pretty much disliked Beast Machines.  Not because of character changes or whatever, but because it's NOT (to the dismay of many on this board) a terribly well-written story.

Really? That's the best sloppy writing I've ever seen.

As much as I am a fan of Beast Machines, I must say that Grimlock is right. BM does have some weak character development (I teach English literature btw ;)).

to be honest how much character developement was needed? considering that most of these characters are carry overs from beast wars.

none is "needed" since the shows exist to sell toys

Heh, since they knew the toys wouldn't sell for BM, they could get around to actually developing characters?

Unfortunately there are so many plot holes and formulaic scenes that it negates any benefit the character development gave you as the viewer.

It's funny how people can watch the same show and have such different reactions to it.

Which is my conciliatory way of saying "I think you're high" :tftongue

LordMadhammer/Galvasean: Yeah sorry, I meant Lord Madhammer... this is what happens when you post at 1am on a Friday night (yeah yeah, technically Sat morning, whatever).

You never specified. You initially said "unlike what we got in G1", which of course, includes the comics.
