The spoiler is cosmentic, the airflow at that point wouldnt be sufficient to gain any kind of benefits as its diverted by the high cab. Also spoilers decrease top speed due to the increased drag they produce (re: downforce)

Actually that may be true for a number of cars, but the Ram SRT10 has been tested with and without the spoiler. Without the spoiler the top speed was around 145mph, WITH the spoiler they were able to push that up to 153mph.

*edit* unless its the back of the loading door that is causing a dead air zone, a flatbed cover should also eliminate that

This would be my guess, the door probably causes some turbulence back there - you could probably get a similar improvement in top speed by simply leaving the bed door down.

This might be a dumb question, but doesn't some of the wind getting caught by the bed door create downforce to give the rear wheels better traction?

I know it's not its purpose, but it seems with such little giving those wheels traction as it is, every little bit would help.

You are correct, I remember reading somewhere that leaving the bed door down actually hinders the truck's aerodynamics.

Downforce is essestially drag and the antichrist to top speed which is why when production cars go for racing records they 'cheat', remove all sorts of ancillaries and aerodynamical aids such as spoiler flaps, windscreen wipers and they even tape up the panel gaps to prevent air getting trapped. Downforce is not the friend of people striving for maximum speed ;) and given the size of the erar tyres and the fact it can only get to 153 I dont think traction is an issue.

Heres an example of how they used to design fast cars pre-downfoce stability, its essentially a bullet on wheels and topped 175mph in basic testing in 1966 before one of its wheels collapsed ;)

Yeah, they downforce is only really a plus when you're dealing with F1 cars. And a lot of the reason for that is so they don't take off like aeroplanes.
