G1 cartoon Ultra Magnus

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure that I'd describe Magnus in that way. He seems to be more of a field commander.

Then again, this *is* a cartoon we're talking about. It's not like the writers had any detailed plan of who was in charge of whom, who did what, etc. (How else do you explain Kup and some random Autobots buggering off to some random planet in "Chaos" without even notifying Rodimus Prime?)

Yeah, thats for sure.. :redface

I really just can't see Magnus as a guy who likes to get his hands dirty..

The writers made Ultra Magnus stable, and Rodimus was always looking

for a way out of leadership.

exampe:

Rodimus-"I'm still me, you're still you, matrix smatrix"

Then the writers have him say "find some other sucker to carry it, because I

quit!"  People are always saying Ultra Magnus was not a good leader and I

think it's crap.  Ultra Magnus was the better than Rodimus in season 3.

The "I can't deal with it now" phrase is always brought up as being a bad

statement, but what would could you expect him to do at that moment? Turn

into Metroplex and save Hot Rod and Kup while protecting that piece of crap shuttle and at the same time destroy the Decepticons?

I can't deal with this now!!!!

*ends post*

A leader should be the first one into battle and the last one to leave.

A leader is there to serve, not to be served. Yes they give orders and others must follow their command (otherwise chaos would reign). But that is what the burden of leading is all about at its core. Serving others.

To assume that everyone is there to serve you makes you nothing more then a dictator. Morally it is really the complete opposite. You lead to serve everyone else.

The word "leader" means a lot more than just "squad commander", which is what you're describing. There are higher levels of leadership that don't require you to be on the field; indeed it would be counter-productive for a general to be on the field b/c he is in charge of a large number of troops. And anyway, when you're talking about a military organization, guess what -- you are supposed to serve your commanding officers. But just because that's the case, it doesn't mean that a commanding officer is by default an uncaring dictator. Quite the opposite. He knows that he holds the lives of his men in his hands, and does whatever he can to keep them from needless harm.

:pfx Plus, not everyone can lead. If a soldier falls, then that's all the consequence there is: a soldier has died. If the leader dies, then the inspiration for the troops is gone, the one who calls the decisions is gone, the overal strategy is lost, etc...etc... (It's exactly why in ST:TNG they gave Picard a first officer. Let the first officer take the risks and get killed.) Everyone can be a soldier/cannon fodder, but not everyone can lead. Therefor the survival of the leader is important.

Now, back on topic. Season 3 Magnus surprised me. Not having seen the movie until later, I was wondering why Rodimus was the leader: Magnus seemed so much more capable. S3 Magnus had the potential to be a great leader. (I also loved how DW made him a way more succesful than OP in their WW comics, because Magnus did succeed to defeat the (megatron-less) Decepticons.

Slightly off topic but just going back to when New Soundwave mentioned Rodimus telling the others to get some other sucker to carry [the matirx], Springer seemed to be the one chosen to carry it both in FFOD (then again, there weren't that many others to choose from at the time, one of them dumb cartoon grimlock) and in the UK comic story 'peace'. That was a great one because Rodimus chose Springer to succeed him after the war, but a Decepticon undercover agent (the last survivor) started to argue that Magnus was a better choice - 'a leader that doesn't think with his fists'. Suffice to say the arguement escalated with a reluctant Magnus being backed up by the Technobots and Springer being supported by the Wreckers. (Whirl - 'where was your precious Magnus while we were winning the war?') Tempers fray, Roadbuster gets shot, Triton (the Decepticon) gets shot in retaliation, and the civil war erupts all over again. Classic!

"Prime, you said the Matrix would light our darkest hour..."

sorry Magnus, Galvatron+a few goons doesnt equal a "darkest hour"...

Ulta Magnus Is Primes Second in command. He has to have Decent Leadership skills to forefill that role. Hes Just as capable as Optimus or Rodimus to lead the Autobots. i think he just measures himself up to optimus and thinks hes not as gd a leader as he. Who was leading the autobots When Optimus was in statis lock on earth? Id bet it was Magnus every time.

A true Leader Is someone People aspire to be, Who they look up 2, who give insperation.

ummm why didn't prime give the matrix to ARCEE ?

ummm kidding by the way. I remember loving that horrid UM toy as a kid. I now have learned to not like the character (cept for in the dreamwave comics). He was lame, I don't think he knew what to do as far as leader goes. I found it wierd how he seemed to be in control on the battlefield at autobot city and as soon as prime hands him the matrix he panics. And did you notice how after he gets "fixed" he is pretty much invisible for the rest of the movie? what happened there? Oh and you can't give him credit for getting the best of Galvatron in S3. The cartoon listed Galvatron as insane and all he really did is beat up cyclonus and destroy some wierd planet. The Cartoon always had the good guy on top no matter what cause it was a kids cartoon and  you couldn't have the bad guys win. The only exception was the movie cause i was a main stream picture and you had to have some kind of plot. thats juts my opinion.

Ultra Magnus is willing to sacrifice his life as a soldier but as a leader you have to be able to send troops possibly out to their deaths. in the Movie U571 Matthew Maconoghey's character sasy he would give his life for anyone of his shipmates but Bill Paxton says the true leader would sometimes have to order people to go on a misson which could kill them
