G1 cartoon Ultra Magnus

Recommended Posts

SURVIVED

He did not lack confidence? Watch the scene where Prime dies and tries to give him the Matrix. Then tell me if he was brimming with self-assurance.

The Autobots sure thought he was dead... but the Junkions' MAGIC GOO fixed all. Too bad nobody thought to pour some of that on Optimus Prime...

There's also a difference between confidence and arrogance. You can be confident in yourself and still possess humility. When Magnus said that he was just a soldier and that he wasn't worthy..... he was right. He knew his role and he accepted it. Which is why it seemed odd to him that Prime would offer him the Matrix. Plus it was an incredible honor, and anyone who would have said "w00t I R0XX0RZ NOW!!!1" probably would have been the wrong guy for the job.

I hear what you are saying. Good point.

You win this time Madhammer  :tfevil

Some interesting points brought up-

I think one of the reasons that Magnus's line:

"I cant Deal with that now" is such a joke nowadays - is because frankly it was SO cold and capable and real at the time - MUCH of TFTM shocked my 7 year old mind when i watched it originally.  It was very mature for a "Kids-Film".  And i know my friends and i thought we were badass watching a PG cartoon and not G(i remember the film getting flack for its rating anyone else?)

We laugh now - but thats cause no matter how intense a 7 year old's experience is - logic dictates that a 20 year old or a 30 year old is going to have a different perspective on that experience - ie: not traumatic now - secretly embarrassed that it has affected one so much anyway.

Now add to that my BIGGEST gripe with the film - even at the time - the Magnus Goo... Point Blank TFTM starts out as an intense apocalyptic and scary Sci-Fi story (for juveniles to be sure) about war... and death -- about a third of the way through (as soon as the S1 bots are gone) it goes back to being a silly kids cartoon.  Thats the only way to justify the grusome deaths of Prowl, Ironhide, Prime et al.  and the pansy kids gloves handling of Magnus, Kup&HR in the sharkticons, Bumblebee and Spike surviving Unicrons innards etc.

So UM's moment of Cold Competence - is a slap in the face to the Dynamic of the second half of the film - i hear more nervous laughter

Add to that Magnus's less than Stellar Toy- He WAS and OP repaint (Automatic Fanboy resentment) and his combined form was the most BRICKTACULAR figure in TF history..... but honestly I LOVED my Magnus as a kid. I loved all the bricks - but once again adult expectations placed on the situation retrospectively....

One other note - and i am surprised no one mentioned this before:

Magnus/Galvetron/Rodimus

TFS start as toys THEN become cartoons - ANYONE NOTICE THAT MAGNUS WAS MEANT TO BE GALVIES CROSS SELL?? I think Rodimus was paired up with Cyclonus or something....

Hunter

magnus rocks IMO he did what he had 2 do in a few words as possible.

p.s galv spanked him hard, hard and fast if it wernt for the junkions he would of been dead for sure.

shame his g1 toy sucked RiD was a way better toy and ofcorse hes just a name given to repaints now :(

Yeah, toywise (ie sizewise), the lineup was to be UM vs. Galvatron (hence the "City Commander" monikers for both), and Rodimus/Wreck-Gar were to go against Cyclonus/Scourge.  When writing the movie that obviously changed, but the new toys were already designed.  And to be honest I think UM was originally intended to be an upgrade of Optimus (as it was in the Diaclone line), but they decided to separate the characters at some point (resulting in UM's color scheme being different of Powered Convoy).  Which is probably why certain S3 episodes that had UM but not Rodimus resulted in UM playing more of an Optimus role, as they were probably written/started before said changes.  But that's all just conjecture, I can't really back that up :tftongue

I remember the TV commercials.... they introduced Ultra Magnus and Galvatron in the same one. Rodimus Prime was introduced in the Hot Rod/Kup/Blurr commercial. "No one can take on the Decepticons like Rodimus Prime!"

Ultra Magnus was a great character He was a great coldier and commander but he didnt want to lead. In the Cartoons and the comics he was willing to give his life for others which a leader should not do. A real leader would be willing to sacrifice lives which Ultra Magnus would rather do himself than let others die

Prime did that too on a number of occasions - even once i think for an Atari 2600 character

I thought of him as a co-leader. kepping Rod's from cracking up and intentionally shutting himself down from the pressure. Sort of like a mentor or something. Or UM was a jack of all trades: A leader AND a soldier. Gains more respect with the troops.
