G1 toys suck? WTF!

Recommended Posts

I would never hit one of my kids, but I'd shake the hell out of them.

:tflaugh1 My dad put a gun to my brothers head....it was unloaded mind you....but when we pointed that out it didn't go too well regardless.

Lets try to talk about toys again instead of kids...

I said:

I still find the G1 toys as amazing as I did when I was a kid. I attribute this to the fact that I remain fairly unimpressed with poseability. The G1 toys had/have a lot of things going for them in both 1985 and 2005, some things:

1. G1 Transformers, particularly years 1984 and 1985, were made to more of an adult standard. They were designed more to the standard of model cars than to action figures. Fine detail, delicate high quality parts, and the like. One of the things that made them so cool when they were new was the fact that the toys were adult compared to other toys of the time. This still holds true today, as the G1 toys have more of an adult, model car quality to them than anything released afterwards, with the possible exception of Takara Binaltech and Masterpiece Prime. They are simply beautiful to look at, and fun to transform. This was their purpose then, and their purpose now.

2. Guns, baby. G1 Transformers are more heavily armed than any modern Transformers. This is mostly due to the modern practice of weapon storage. The downside to weapon storage is that most of the time the guns suck. I miss the days of sacrificing weapon storage for having better and more guns.

3. The Transformers cartoon, as inconsistent in animation and storyline as it was, was still the best cartoon of its day, and the reason for that was memorable characters. No 80's cartoon ever had characters as memorable as Optimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, and Soundwave. Modern Transformers, including Beast Wars, have lacked this star quality as well. BW might have better characters, but haven't managed to gain the iconic status of the G1 legends.

4. Tech Specs. The G1 tech specs are absolutely fantasitc, complete masterpieces. No tech specs from any line after G1 comes anywhere near the G1 tech specs. BW, RiD, Armada and Energon tech specs are crap compared to G1. The Binaltech bios are interesting, but still lack the magic of the G1 specs. No other toyline can really compare to the tech specs that were released with G1 figures either, though 80's Gi-Joe does come close.

5. Crossover appeal. Anyone who has taken regular people to see their collection can understand this. G1 toys are simply more impressive to people who are not us. I can show people my collection, and I can guarantee the first figure they try to grab will be one of three figures: Masterpiece Prime, G1 Megatron or G1 Soundwave. It never fails. I brought alternators Smokescreen, Energon Megatron, and Armada Tidal Wave and some other figures to amuse some kids backstage at a play I was Stage Manager for. All the adults there were mostly only interested in my beat up G1 Soundwave. People will admit Alternators are cool, but still are always more interested in the G1 stuff. Among non-toy collectors, G1 is king.

Someone saying that G1 is crap is just funny.

P.S. thecasualoblivion...... I'm glad that you love G1 so much, 'cuz it obviously makes you happy. But I do think you might be overstating your case just a bit.

What exactly am I overstating?

1. G1 toys are not action figures. Judge them as such and you will be disappointed. Judge them as what they are and they live up to the legend.

2. G1 figures have better weapons. Is this not true?

3. The names Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Starscream are as famous as they are because of the G1 cartoon. You can argue that BW/BM was a better cartoon and you would be right. Neither was ever as big as the G1 cartoon.

4. Only truly great tech specs on Transformers. Period.

5. People who are not toy collectors and not Transformers collectors are always more impressed by G1 toys. This is a fact.

There is more to G1 than just nostalgia.

5. People who are not toy collectors and not Transformers collectors are always more impressed by G1 toys. This is a fact.

No its not. Everyone is more impressed with the Alternators. They are just about the only thing my non-collector friends are impressed with. RiD is the next most impressive line to non-collectors.

Yeah. My reissue optimus didn't feel quite right either. Like they're using a less-dense plastic or something. The older version feels more solid or something like that, if that's the correct word. About the only thing they improved are the decals, but sadly, that's it.

(now just imagine BW or BM reissues 10 or so years down the line!)

That'll give me a chance to get the figures that I missed out on, considering at the time I wasn't a big BW/BM toy fan.  And it'll give me a chance to replace my Optimal Optimus, which isn't so much broken as it is missing a hell of a lot of pieces (arm shields, missiles and blaster :tfsad )

Do you have any G1 figures? If you do, do you have any of the really impressive ones, like Megatron(people just cream themselves over the gun mode), Soundwave, Devastator, Fortress Maximus, or something like that? Who are these non-collectors you're talking about?

Most adults(18+) who don't collect toys couldn't don't care about anything we collect, including Alternators. G1 had a bigger impact on popular culture than any TF since. This is why people who don't care about toys find the G1 stuff more interesting, just because of the pop culture aspect of it.

Maybe not everyone, but the majority of the non-geek public would find the vintage G1 stuff more interesting.

Which era of G1, thecasualoblivion?  The early years when TFs had fairly realistic alt modes? Or the final years where most of the toys were essentially "fold robot in half, attach a couple accessories" and had indistinct alt modes (nearly all of the first run pretenders looked alike).

The first 3-4 years of G1 had some great toys and the most impact, but most seem to forget the line ran to 1990, when some truely craptacular stuff came out (I should know, 88/89 were my big TF years).  That isn't to say some truely neat stuff didn't come out either.

To be quite frank, the last 2-3 years of Transformers can't hold a candle next to the first 3 or 4 years, much less Alternators or RID

The famous years of G1 are years 1-2, and to a lesser extent year 3 and a few specific figures from year 4, like Scorponok, Fort Max, and Sixshot. These are what people are likely to recognize.

I have Megatron, Soundwave, Soundblaster, most of the Autobot cars, the seekers. They are just more impressed with the complexity and engineering with the Alternators than the pop culture influence of the originals.

Should I be worried that I don't remember this?

Back on topic, though, I fully agree with you. I was on a huge Gundam kick, until I was rather forcibly pointed towards buying a Master Piece Convoy. Something inside just reawakened, and I was once again way into Transformers. Got me not interested in just old toys, but in a few of the newer series as well.

The imagination's still there, so I still find fun in the toys.
