G1 toys suck? WTF!

I know my Transformers were played with. It's probably why I have a hard time keeping anything MIB.

Somebody has to stand up for the old school. I really don't hear anyone else doing it so I will. I really get annoyed when people say G1 fans are just nostalgic for bygone days and have no grip on the reality that BW and RiD are better toys. You guys seem to already have made up your minds there, so I'm not really concerned what you say or whether my opposite argument has any impact on you. Just saying what needs to be said.

I dispute the fact that there is no reason other than nostalgia to prefer G1. If others laugh at that statement, that's their problem. I will, however, say something about it.

There is no need to stand up for the `old school` as it is quite capable of doing it for itself, look at the Takara TF collections, reissues and g1 prices on ebay, all doing a brisk trade to say the least.  I harrang everyone on thise boards about how sucky BW/BM were, how sucky Armada and Energon are and so on, even the alts do not escape my judgement of solomon ;)

Point is nostalgia, though not the only reason, is a big factor in g1 in the same way as classic cars do, they are not as well built, not as complex and are terrifyingly fragile but they have charm, are a reflection of bygone days when accountants didnt rule their construction with a rod of iron and `gimmicks` didnt reign supreme.  I think the tech was cutting edge and they were a revelation at the time, then came the gimmicks and killed it (headmasters/pretenders etc) but there are still people who like these abominations.

Go figure, people are different ;)

I have a hard time understanding why anybody would even want to keep anything MIB.

They aren't models because the scale is way off for most of them.

Most of the Diaclone-derived Autobot cars are pretty close to 1/43 scale (most fall within 1:39-1:44 scale).

1/43 is a popular scale for currently produced die-cast model cars - it's such an odd scale (as opposed to what seems like more natural values like 1:12, 1:18, 1:24, 1:36, 1:48, 1:72, etc.) as it was derived from the old Corgi toy car line, which featured cars that were about this size.

Sure, but when you throw the jets, tape decks, guns, and tanks in there ... scale is pretty much destroyed.

The one thing I don't like about kids these days is how much darkness is within them. But I can say that in general about the world... eh... just the times we live in.. very creative the young minds are, but also very destructive.. :tfsad

Might just be my common experience though. A messed up kid = a messed up family.. and it's all a giant circle until someone says 'stop' and break the chain.

Startin to sound like some kind of artistic philospher here.. :redface

Meh.. G1 is overrated. I just like the old Diaclones in the line, really. Those are still the best ones, IMHO.

I concurr ;)

I just don't think articulation is what makes a toy good. Being able to believe a car can turn into a robot. If they actually make it seem possible, then it is probably a good toy. The original G1 figures were awesome in that aspect. We didn't need all that articulation and stuff when we were kids. Nor did we need show accuracy for that matter.

What I liked about Transformers as a kid was not only the awesome cartoon and comic and tech specs but also the fact that they were 2 toys in one. A vehicle/beast and a robot.

I did not cate much about articulation then, my imagination would do that for me. I thought the toys were pretty impressive and I still do. Now I am inclined to get a toy for its character as depicted in the Dreamwave's More Than Meets The Eye series.

you know what did instill that sens of awe and G1 wonder   20th anniversary Prime

I still feel like an 8 year old when I pick it up

I agree, that toy alone is what got me back into buying transformers. I remember looking in a random magazine and there was optimus, chest wide, matrix glowing and I was like: "HOLY CRAP!"

I went down to chinatown the next day and was like

"Yo! This new Optimus Prime toy is coming out. Do you know anything about it?"

"I have 6 coming tomorrow, do you want one? It'll be about $160"

"HELLS YES DUMMY YOU!!"

And best of all...it wasn't just me, after my brothers saw it they each bought one, and so did one of my best friends. Masterpiece Prime brought back the Transformer fan in me. Then the alternators came and I am now a LOT poorer.

Same here too.  Saw 20th anni. Prime in magazine, now a over a year later I am collecting Alternators after twelve years of not collecting.

Same here.  Masterpiece Prime is what got me back into Transformers.  And Alternators is what's keeping me into Transformers.
