TFs = SciFi

I can admit when I'm getting overly fanboyish.

It may take a while, but I'll get there.

I'll call TFs sci-fi when you call He-Man homoerotica

Is this horse dead?

I'm gonna still consider it sci fi. My opinion on it shouldnt matter this much to you :thumb

Science fiction is a defined genre and isn't really open to your interpretation. Madhammer's just trying to inform you of what's correct...

Main Entry: science fiction

Function: noun

: fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals or having a scientific factor as an essential orienting component

Notice, in no way, does Star Wars fall into that description.

I have actually had entire college courses devoted to defining film genres. I wrote a 16 page paper on the evolution of science fiction in film over the 20th century. I'd go into all of it, but I'd just end up parrotting everything Madhammer has already said.

SMACK!

And all kids (or adults) need is something - even the barest skeleton of a story - to make them feel that their playthings are more than toys; that they're characters who have life beyond a child's imagination.

That's a great line.

And it's the reason people have purchased figures they originally thought of as substandard (e.g. Alt. Ravage) after hearing the character's backstory.

And splendic is right. I'm sorry to say it, but every character in G1 was a stereotype, even Optimus Prime. How predictable was he? You always knew how he would react in any given situation, because he was "the hero". And in B-movies and pulp fiction, heroes always act the same. They're brave. They're selfless. They're noble. They're strong. They're determined. And they're utterly two-dimensional.

Which is probably why Cullen decided to voice his Optimus by doing a bad John Wayne impression.

I'm sorry, but it's true.

Maybe it shouldn't be beholden to the rules of sci-fi, but I think people need to stop  overthinking TFs.

For example, size shifiting.  Why are people able to handle comic book characters like Giant-Man, the Wasp, Kitty Pryde, Vision, the Atom, and Martian Manhunter, who can all alter their molecular structures, but not Transformers who can do the same?  Why do people accept the Veritech fighters that can transform and Gundams with seemingly limitless power supplies, able to fire insanely powerful weapons, but not Transformers?

For the record, I think it's all stupid. :D
