why fort max?

3.) Bragging rights: Remember "G.I. Joe?" Remember the U.S.S. Flagg aircraft carrier--the one that was so big that Hasbro had to put more wheels on it and add a folding feature to the control tower, just so it could fit underneath a child's bed? Fort Max is the Flagg of Transformers--only the lucky or the rich would ever find one under the tree come Christmas morning. He's one of those elusive "Holy Grails" that collectors comb the Earth for since almost no one could buy him then, and there's no chance of a reissue now.

i remember the USS flagg- a kid i knew had it.

he had to have help carrying it out of his room.

ooh... just think of this kitbash: flagg into tidal wave! it'd be like a 4 foot tall TF!

I've seen a USS FLAG customized into Broadside.

somebody was selling on ebay a long time ago. I saved the pic

want to see it? of course you do?

Being one that had both metroplex & fort max back in the day

I can say that to me Metroplex was THE number 1 base guy. comes with extra little buddies. you can put mini cars in him, etc.

That was great Until I got Fortress Maximus. then it was all over! It just doesn't get any cooler. He comes with huge weapons, got hidden guns, 2 cars that combine (cog), Cerebros & SPIKE!

Course there are things you can do with metroplex that you cant with fort max. Like add the aerialbots onto him and make him super strong!

But even to this day I can say: Hey, I own a Fort Max!

It's a tie between Fort max and Metroplex for me.

Fort max is a bad ass for all the reason listed above and I loike Metroplex's look and asthetic.

Fort max is my favoite TF i own I think. It's just awesome. Transforming the guy is unlike other TF's. With Fort Max it's more involved, you got a whole handfull of TF that you gotta lift and fold.

It's great.

I got mine at OTFCC 2003 and wanted to show him off a little, so I carried him around. It's like walking with a small child.

Re: Metroplex

If my TF turns into a city, he damn well better be taller than Blaster, who turns into a tape deck, by more than an inch or so. Therefore, Metroplex loses.

I don't have either, but I can say that I'd gladly pay $400 for a complete Fort Max before paying more than $50 for a complete Metroplex.

I do want both in my collection, but Metroplex only for completist value. Fort Max I would want even if I could only own 10 TFs total.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ran across this image of Fort Max and this is pretty much how I've always taken the relative scale of the characters:

The love of Fort Max can only be attributed to the toy (due to it's size, cost, rareness and all-around coolness). I would seriously question anyone who favors Fort Max based off of the cartoon because he was basically built in a half-hour by Spike and 3 Hive robots which is ridiculously unbelieveable...even within the context of a cartoon about 4 million year-old robots :tflaugh

Storyline was lame, yeah. Plus there were so many errors in that short time- like having Cerebros transform and essentially end up in Fort Max's shape when he did.

But yeah, the big draw seems to be the, well, BIG part.

Anything that can cast a shadow over multiple Gestalt Giants is cool.

the only aspect of metro and fort max was the cartoons, and it seemed to me that metroplex was cooler in that respect

Did Dreamwave had done something with fortress maximus

Whoa whoa... you're basing your like/dislike of Fort Max off that awful POS Rebirth cartoon?

Please. Read the bloody comics. Until he sent Goldbug to resurrect Prime on Nebulos, Fort Max was leading the Autobots and butting heads with Grimlock. If that doesn't work, try looking for Japanese Headmasters episodes that show Fort Max in his comparatively deserved glory.

Nevermind that the show didn't show Metroplex being broken stupidly at the waist like the toy :roll They also visually fleshed out the character a great deal in order to make his toy counterpart's odd proportions less obvious to potential owners in that beloved 30-min commercial.

Besides, looking simply at the cartoon characters there's a grunting behemoth they throw out every 4-5 eps in Season three, whose characterization is all but non-existent. People live in him, bad guys steal his eyes and on occasion he either goes crazyrampagenuts or fights Trypticon. Sloppily. And... that about sums him up in his entirety. His freakin' drones have more character to 'em.

And while I loathe rebirth, I find the fact that a desperate Spike being bonded with a pacifist Transformer so that their conflicted take on the war at hand is decided by the most powerful transformer around to be a comparatively enticing concept. Now, keep in mind that I hate rebirth. Hate it, hate it, hate it!

But the trend I'm seeing is that there are those in this thread that choose Metroplex purely out of love for the character, and I feel compelled to counter that it is in fact familiarity they choose and NOT character at all. Since Fort Max only got the latter half (if even that) of the final episode of the G1 series to show himself as a character, I'm not surprised he's so unfamiliar. But considering he's all but legendary in terms of TF Fandom, it's tacky to write him off for a base with no more characterization than a toaster. Heck, even Trypticon got more characterization than Metroplex! Trypticon's is merely that of a whiny child, but they made sure to get that across.
