Alternator Grimlock

Recommended Posts

Difficulty...10!

Damn this guy is hard. I got both GRIMLOCKs on the same day. One by mail and the other at the nearest Target` and let me tell you I'm glad that I got both versions because if I didn't have the Hasbro instructions, I would have thought that GRIM's robot mode was totally disproportionate. Had a hard time setting the torso peg just right and now that I see how to do it I could see that there should have been more work done to the torso. I like the overall look but that "flat" stomache of his could have been reengineered to be more dimensional. When you look at him sideways he looks like he's still under construction. Maybe the ass-panel could have been used to hide his torso more completely? I'm not sure.

As far as transforming him, only in my BT version did the ass-panel and the doors keep flying off. Its kinda annoying but I'll keep working on him.

What do you guys and gals think about his torso? (can you tell I have a problem with his torso? lol) :tftongue

Good points about his torso. His stomach panel could have been spruced up more.

I guess the allure of the Mustang grill tends to divert your eyes away from his stomach.

Maybe some stickers would help out his plain stomach and upper legs? Reprolabels?

Yeah, the stomach is crap. It makes him look 2-dimensional. I also wish there were some way more gold could've been worked in... but for the life of me I can't figure out where it could possibly go. You certainly couldn't have a golden grill on a silver car. On a lighter note, I finally got the torso to clip together right, but it still kind of comes undone if I try to pick him up by his top-half.

Has anyone tried turning his legs around backwards so that he has clown shoes? It looks kind of silly, but I might try it on Wheeljack, just because I like my clone alts to look a little more different.

I might think about doing that to WHEELJACK as well but I do think that his feet look great. My only thought on the feet is that the seats may get a little scratched looking if put on a rough surface. Not too much of a concern on the other figures since the marks might be hidden on the bottom of the car modes but on GRIM it might be a bit more noticable.

Sertile, the same thing keeps happening to me too. The way Hasbro designed the torso region seems to make me think that they only planned on GRIM being a "display only figure" and not for playing with as much as the others. I don't think that gold would have helped him out too much either. I hope that before WHEELJACK comes out, Hasbro has time to go back to the drawing board and just do a little more tweaking to this section. I love the way he came out and it would be dissapointing if he came to us mangled. :thumb

By the way, has anyone had any trouble with GRIMLOCK's hood being dirty or scratched? I got that on both of mine and may have to get over being Outback and write to BIG BAD TOY STORE to get a replacement. What I found interesting is that the ALTENATORS variation had a mangeled hood also complete with scratches and paint smudges galore. It's sweet! lol Anyone found the same quirk? :tftongue

Los, I thought REPROLABLES too but I don't know how much the stickers would help in making his stomache region look more 3-D. I can see however, bad@$$ stickers for the hood and doors. Maybe giving homage to G-1 GRIM? I see T-rex on the sides of the car and Bad @$$ written on the back of his window. Maybe written like the "ain't scared" lables. That would be pretty cool. Toymaker? :thumb

Rumblebee, I keep thinking about the colors and designs on Dead End's legs. Simple touch ups. Maybe some sublte blue, bronze or red stickers would looks good. Nothing too flashy or shiny though. Grimlock's stomach has designs on it that look like they were meant to be colored. Those triangles on his ribs remind me of stickers that would go on G1 Grimlocks hips.

I dunno about extra colors... he looks great to me.

...which means I just found Grimmy at my local Target. :clap :yay :D

My quick observations:

1. PAIN IN THE ASS to transform the upper body.

2. WORTH IT in the end. He looks AWESOME.

3. I am SO GLAD I didn't buy the BT version, because he would already be scratched from transforming him once.

BTW the tummy is fine for me... the focus isn't on that part of him anyway. The silver is definitely the eye-catching part. That and his KILLER head sculpt.

I think the best thing about Grimlock is that he DOES look badass. Nice job, HasTak.

Has anyone tried turning his legs around backwards so that he has clown shoes? It looks kind of silly, but I might try it on Wheeljack, just because I like my clone alts to look a little more different.

This will probably look better on Wheeljack since his seats are blue.

Los, I did notice the design cuts on his stomache and was wondering just how good he might look with the extra colors. I like the black torso, maybe a bit more gold incorporated in the design would be ok but still don't think it would help too much as much as a sturdier torso. For WHEELJACK though I might see it working. He is the mad scientist of the crew and I could see him working on botched expreiments on himself...LOL. :tftongue

Thought the sleek silver of the BT version worked much better for GRIMMY. :thumb

  • 4 weeks later...

I found him at Target today, and boy is he hard to Transform. My God... :eek

:tfevil welcome to the club

may be hard, but his bot mode is soooo worth the pain!
