Why i Dont like G1

Recommended Posts

my question, where are these "geewun" fanboys that everyone is always complaining about? i see constant reference to people that only like g1, but i never see anyone actually say they hate everything else, or that only g1 is really transformers

they dont stick around here very long, usually flame there way right on out...

but if you travel other sights you see a lot of the "purists" out there

There used to be a lot more of them out there. The Beast era really brought out a lot of angst in the fandom at a time when the Internet was just starting to bloom. Most fans were okay with Beast Wars once they realized how good the show was (and I'm sure the G1 references didn't hurt), but Beast Machines was a different story. Lots of fans got uber-pissed about a "techno-organic" Cybertron, the Oracle and Transmorphers (not the least of which being the 100% organic TF in my avatar/sig). And then when RiD came along, they were all like, "this is what TFs should be" because it was a lot more like G1.

I do think that people have mellowed over time, however. BW/BM is now accepted canon, and not just some new wacky direction that TFs are being taken in. Plus the GeeWun'ers are simply outnumbered nowadays. Most people recognize that there is at least something to like in every series.

And when you think about it, do other franchises take risks like that? Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers pretty much look the same as ever. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles doesn't seem different at all. However, G.I. Joe did try different things including bringing back the old style "dolls" that they started out with. I noticed that they did bring back the small articulated action figures after they tried the bigger traditional action figure line.

Totally.

I think every TF series should add something new to the overall mythos. Look at what BW/BM contributed on a conceptual level. It revolutionized our understanding of TFs. And to think of where they might have gone with Transtech.... oh but I've already said this before.

I think Madhammer loves Beast Machines. :tflaugh :D

G1 Started it all, and without it I would probably have lost interest and never regained my love of transformers. When the DVD's were released I purchased every season, and so far have not watched even half of the episodes. Mostly due to me picking and choosing my favorites. Yes there are consistancy problems, and plot holes, but no worse then Energon or Armada.

As for toys, it has already been said, but 20 years of technology can really change a toy from a brick to a super articulated figure (Armada Scavenger is the exception). There is a place in my heart for G1, and a space in my collection for some of the reissues and of course the primes and megatrons from that age. But my love for transformers has continued with each incarnation (I even like BM, which I consider to be better then Armada for story and character wise)

Every transformer line takes leaps ahead of the one before it, and sometimes a few steps back, but overall it is a forward progression, and with the pics that I have seen of Galaxy Force, it just keeps getting better.

G1 has a special place in my heart, and everyone should atleast own one brick.

I have to admit that when I first started posting at TFans, I was something of a G-1 purist. But in that respect, that was just for myself in terms of what i liked in transformers.

But since being exposed to more of the post G-1 era lines, I've actually developed an appreciation for more of the other series. Although they will never have the memories for me that G-1 had, each series in it's own right has things about it that G-1 just didn't (and in many cases couldn't) have; Beast Wars had an edge to it,Beast machines continued that edge into a whole new version of transformers altogether, RID was a little more slapstick than the other series (my opinion only, don't get offended RID fans! :D ), but fun nonetheless, Armada began a saga that extends all the way through Energon, and i'm pretty excited to see what's ahead in the next series.

So all in all, while other series aren't G-1, G-1 isn't other series either. It's like comparing the different Star Trek series. Each has it's good points and best features. they serve to more fully explore the world of transformers. And while one series starts it all, it doesn't by any means has to end it all. neither does any OTHER series. In short....

It's ALL good!! :clap :clap :clap

what exactly makes someone a g1 purist, cause ive been refered to as one a few times by a few different people, but i dont understand why, i have seen all tf series except for RID, i never got a chance to see more than a few eps of that, but so far, the only thing i havnt like is BM, i just didnt like the story of megatron trying to make cyberton all robots and optimus trying to get rid of the robots and make everything organic, i just thought the idea was stupid (doesnt help that in the story pretty much all tfs had been deactivated)

i like the g1 characters more than any other group, is that what is making people catagorize me as a purist?

On break post.... I like this topic though, so lemme give it a shot.

I have one problem with G1...

...and it's that it led us to believe that here, now with Energon, Cyberton, Bt/Alts, etc., that repaints are acceptable. That since G1 had them they are "homage" of sorts. That repaints are Tradition.

If I could take away any one thing from G1 it would be repaints passed 1984. I could see the neccessaty in them in the fledgling line with the Seekers and Cassettes to bolster the Decepticon forces, but I wish G1 would have kicked that habbit right then and there and strictly went into remolds only after that.

Repaints now, as a result of G1, are the most evil thing imaginable. Sure they have there pros... (they give you a choice of color) but the cons repaints bring to TF collecting outweight them (in my opinion).

If G1 would have laid down the law and said "hey, let's not be cheap and re-sell an identical mold twice... if we have to re-sell a mold let's revamp it and give our market there moneys worth" I would be pleased. But they didn't and now we've been bread into believing that "we'll see every mold twice (at least) and if we're LUCKY there'll be some retooled parts 'cause that the way G1 was"

Letting that one slide in my book is G1's biggest mistake....

But hey, what do I know.

that is the first time ive heard someone blame g1 for repaints...

Repaints are NOT exclusive to G1. Go Bots were well-known for it's repaints of figures. (just HOW many Leader-1 and Cy-Kill versions do we need?) Not to mention that Gi joe only had 8 sets of arms, legs waists, and torsos to start. To make a new character, they would mix and match the parts, then REPAINT them.

But in reference to repaints as taking a total character and recoloring him to represent a totally different character: G1 is guilty of that. But if you think about it, wouldn't the transformers take a sucessfully proven chassis / body design, and use it for a new robot? In the case of the seekers, this is very evident.

But i wouldn't go so far as to blame G1 for the "repaint syndrome" we are suffering from. The truth is, A mold for any toy is usually made from stainless steel, which is VERY expensive to manufacture. First, they have to design the prototype, then in the old days they would use a pantograph machine (It was a wierd rig that had a stylus or non-writing pen on the end) to carve the basic design into a block of steel. (Nowadays they use CNC macihinng to accomplish the same thing to a greater degree of detail and accuracy.) After the initial carving, aprofessional engraver was called in to do the fine details.( And keep in mind, the details were INVERSE: sunken panel lines were raised on the mold, grooves and inlets were raised too.) Clear plastic parts required the molds to be polished to a MIRROR finish. ( and have to be repeatedly done so, to keep them at top level.)

So, taking a look at all of this, it cost a toy company a LOT of money to come up with an entirely new mold for a toy. It was (and is still today) far cheaper to try a "test shot" of a new color in the molds, and see if it sells. I'm not saying it's right, but from the manufacturer's point of view, it's at least somewhat understandable.
