When Did Prices Drop On Gen 1 Figures

Recommended Posts

To me I would expect the prices of figures that have been reissued numerous time to drop in value...like Jazz, Prowl, Hot Rod, Bruticus, etc. While the remainder of figures that haven't to either retain their price or go up.

It's just weird seeing some of these prices. For instance I saw a complete Sandstorm for only $25 and a Bruticus for $50

If this was 2 years ago I prolly could have easily got $4500 for my collection but now, maybe $2500, and some of these figures that have dropped I paid almost 2x's that before hand. I hope the collectors market goes up again, but I doubt it'll be anytime soon.

Also people who are selling,m finally figured out that the reason people are not buying is because they are charging way to much and everyone is going to go for the cheapest

Very true. And at this point I'm sure everyone that actually would pay those ridiculous prices already has.

Basically, it took me 2 years to buy Cybertron Scourge. I got him for $30 total including shipping yesterday. meanwhile there is some idiot on eBay who keeps posting him for $124 MISB, and it makes me wonder if the thought ever occurred to him to drop the price to something more realistic. Also I have noticed more collectors putting their stuff on eBay so that further brings the price down.

$124 for Cybertron Scourge? Seriously? I have the guy, and he's awesome, but anyone that would shell out 124 for it is a chump. That's for sure.

Now if it was a Cyro Scourge...maybe justified at that point

Maybe, I don't really know too much about that one haha. I didn't even know he existed until not too long ago, Cryo Scourge slipped under my radar. Though I can say having one of the mold is enough. I wish he would've been a little more articulated.

I paid $29 total for Cryo Scourge last year, and for me? I decide how much I am going to spend on a figure before I go on eBay to search for him. But to me? Cryo Scourge even MISB is worth maybe $40. It is funny how figures from Energon and Cybertron are priced beyond vintage G1 MISB most of the time.

I do have 3 versions of the mold now, Scourge, Cryo Scourge, and Predacon Bruticus. It is one of the best molds to come out of Cybertron, while most Energon molds are crap

yea, the market is soft right now. Good thing for me. I'm finally getting around to completing my G1 collection. I've been wanting to do this for years. The headmasters/powermasters still fetch a good price if complete. I saw a Weirdwolf on eBay the other day go for $170. complete with 'tight' joints. you could piece one together from the different sellers for cheaper than that. I got lucky 2 months back when i was able to buy a guy's entire TF collection for $2000. He didn't want to take the time in piecing it out and was going to try and get $4000-$7500. If everything was complete and in top shape, it could have been worth $7500 but he didn't want to take the time and go through it all. I back out last minute and he offered it to me for $2000. After a weeks worth of work, i pulled all the pieces i want and sold the rest to Transformersland for $2000. I kept about 70 figures too.

Point to my story is take the time and piece out your collection. and don't just settle for eBay. Transformerland is a great place to sell your items to. Some figures demand higher prices on eBay, and some sites will pay more for the figures. Use eBay's watch feature and get an idea of what things are going for and then use that and make offers to other places.

I have been piecing together a G1 collection mostly via eBay for the last 4 years or so and am on it fairly regularly. I think that the economy and the squeeze it has put on disposable income, as well as the higher number of people selling collections for money, is a large factor, but there are larger problems with the eBay market right now. The way the fixed price "buy it now" auctions are run, primarily by professional scalpers, borders on collusion. It's bemusing how quickly other buy it now prices will get in line with the highest price on the same item. I think this can create some fatigue on the site, leading to less activity/ enthusiasm for actual auctions. I know I get tired of wading through all the ridiculously overpriced buy it nows to find an auction thats worth watching. People have the right to ask for what they think something is worth, but there is just no consequence to setting the bar above what the true fair market price is and letting it clog up the auction block.

You can't tell me a masterpiece Thundercracker is rare when the picture shows the one you're selling sitting on top of two cases of them!

Looooooong time lurker, this is the first thread that made me want to comment, so I joined....blah blah.....

Anyway, this may be harsh, but investing in transformers toys is a bad investment. Looking for a return is not wise.

The TF Market is too small and toy rarity is no longer the case. Reissues, accessibility to purchase old g-1 stuff through ebay, etcetera. The small group of collectors got what they wanted already (ie. those who are willing to shell the bucks 'shelled' the big bucks), and the casual ones got the reissues. There is simply no market for high priced old transformers toys. New movies are killing the collectible-ness too. Face it, it's much cooler when you're the only owning G-1 toys and talking about transformers. Gentrification of transformers in the public through the numerous tv shows, movies, toy line, killed the price of G-1.

There are those who'll pay high price, but the numbers a much lower than late 90's/early 2000's. Less demand, decrease in price.

That makes sense that prices would drop since demand has to. Unfortunately the stuff I am missing from my G1 collection ARE the things that still command high price...like Fort Max, Bludgeon, Thunderwing, Scorponok..items of those nature. So the only way I can see prices dropping on the likes of those would be if they got reissued somehow. Although it is very unlikely since those molds...with exception of Fort MAx, are more than likely lost or broken.

Do the Energon/Cybertron transformers really go for more than G1 stuff? I never would've guessed that. Especially since the A/E/C continuity is one of the most hated story wise haha.

I guess it's lucky then that I was most heavily in to collecting at that point so I got the stuff that's going for more money now at retail price when they first came out.
