When Did Prices Drop On Gen 1 Figures

Recommended Posts

So I was looking at the completed listings on eBay of G1 figures and I noticed ALOT of them are going for cheap now...though there are still some that command high prices. Reason I was looking is because I just recently lost my job and am considering selling my collection as a last resort.

So when did everything start going for less? I mean top gem items like Predaking, Piranacon, Monstructor, Jetfire, Roadbuster, etc have dropped big time from looks of it. I realize that Predaking and Piranacon have been reissued but with the quality and color changes of those figures, you'd think that people would want the originals as they are better quality.

Thankfully I do have quite a bit of the items still commending top dollar like MEnasor, Shockwave, Sixshot, Punch/Counterpunch, Headmasters, etc.

So if I was to sell my collection as a last resort..Should I wait until DotM hype starts generating more buzz? As usually sales tend togo up during when the movie comes out.

My best guess would be for sometime now. I had to sell a chunk of my collection about 9-10 months ago and basically lost my ass compared to what I put out for them(and I'm still smarting from the loss of them and the small amount of cash I received). Collectors markets in general have taken a beating since the economy tanked about 2 years ago.

I too was going to say recession...........

See this is good and bad I s'pose

Bad because it means your figures aren't worth as much as they used to, but good as I've started wanting to buy up a few G1 figures again

It's not necessarily the main factor, but I do think that one factor is Generations/Universe. I believe there are some old fans out there who are looking to scratch their nostalgia itch, but not so badly as to want to track down or pony up for the G1 originals; they're just fine picking up a Generations remake, or a reissue. Build quality is secondary; in fact, some may have found that they prefer the better-articulated and occasionally more screen-accurate new products over the vintage items.

I imagine to a certain extent, that after reissues brought the originals in to prominence, they may have finally leveled off a little in demand as well.

Also people who are selling,m finally figured out that the reason people are not buying is because they are charging way to much and everyone is going to go for the cheapest

Very true. And at this point I'm sure everyone that actually would pay those ridiculous prices already has.

Basically, it took me 2 years to buy Cybertron Scourge. I got him for $30 total including shipping yesterday. meanwhile there is some idiot on eBay who keeps posting him for $124 MISB, and it makes me wonder if the thought ever occurred to him to drop the price to something more realistic. Also I have noticed more collectors putting their stuff on eBay so that further brings the price down.

I was just checking the prices on Sixshot and Shockwave and I almost fell over. Shockwave was going for over 400.00. The RE-ISSUE of Sixshot was going for 220. WTF? Who can afford that these days? The secondary market has just gone crazy now. A re-issue is going for more than a vintage version? This is why I am hoping that Takara wasn't teasing us back in Botcon of last year when they responded to the question of a re-issue Shockwave: "You dont want a new one?"
