Inheriting someone's collection...

Recommended Posts

I've wanted an Ultra Magnus vs Skywarp set for a long time, and three days ago I ended up inheriting a set...literally. A friend and fellow Transformers fan passed away unexpectedly seven months ago, and his significant other gathered up his collection and said I was the one who should have them. I've always wanted the set, as I missed my opportunities back in the day. Skywarp was my first G1 Decepticon, so he's always had a place in my heart. I've wanted Ultra Magnus for the last year because I ended up lusting after the City Commander upgrade set and bought one. So now I have them...and I just feel guilty for it, because it took a wonderful person passing away to accomplish. I was presented with three boxes of "stuff"...told that if I didn't take it, it would all go to the Goodwill. Besides the mentioned VS pack, I also came home with R.I.D. Optimus and Magnus, Armada Prime and Megatron, Armada Unicron, Classics Optimus, Bumblee, Jetfire, and Cliffjumper...Alternators Wheelejack, Rollbar, SDCC Rodimus (which I actually gave to him as a gift the last time I attended SDCC), World's Smallest Optimus, U.S. Masterpiece Optimus (the later one with talking base) and a few random Gundam and Robotech items.

I guess I'm just curious if anyone else has inherited someone's collection before? If so, what did you do with it? I already have some of these items, but selling them would feel awkward...and they do mean something to me because they belonged to a friend. I finally today went through the box, because I honestly didn't feel up to exploring it for a day or two...and even now it still feels uncomfortable. Besides some money from my Grandfather...this is really the only time in my life I've inherited anything, so maybe these feelings are normal.

Has anyone else inherited a Transformers collection?

Sorry to hear about the passing of your friend. My wife and I just made our own wills and it just occurred to me while reading your post that I don't have anything about my Transformers collection in there. Oh well, everything will go to my wife and the kid (or kids if we have more). They can do with the collection as they wish. As far as inheriting, the only thing I ever inherited was money when my father passed away. With that money I was able to buy camera equipment and start my own DBA.

Enjoy the collection, don't feel guilty. I'm sure if your friend had any say, he would have wanted you to have it.

I have inherited others collections but not the way you have. I'm also sorry to hear about your friend.

I would say the Ultra Magnus vs Skywarp now has even more meaning for you then it did before.

Again I am sorry to hear about your friend, but for the collection. I would say take care of it like your friend would have wanted it taken care of.

OK, the way I see it Ultra, is You've been given some items, that instead of being bashed to pieces by children, or just thrown away in the trash, will now be truelly appreciated still by you, who I'm sure will allways cherish these figures. Every time you look at them you will remember your friend who passed, and that alone makes the sentimental value of them very high. SO I say don't feel guilty, but keep them as keepsakes and rememberances of your friend who probably would have appreciated that they went to you.

I know what you're trying to say about feeling guilty about it. But I bet fomr his perspective NOTHING could have been done better with these toys

Apart from that being my opinion, my condolences to the loss of your friend

It is natural to feel that way but even if you have doubles you can create customs you and your friend may have talked about or make a special custom in there honer with a glass cass and plaque as a memorial to your friend sorry for your loss

I've never inherited Transformers, but when I was in 2nd grade my best friend died and his mother gave me and my brother a lot of his toys. It was difficult for me to play with any of it---until I realized that he probably would have wanted it that way.

In related events, I've recently had a student pass away unexpectedly and his parents asked my to play his instrument---that I helped them pick out and buy this past spring---at his service this weekend. I'm having a bit of a difficult time right now too.

I thought about this in detail and have writen in my will that either a hole is to be dug deep enough to push it all in with me, OR my 2 best friends can break it up between themselves if I don't have kids or anything.

They were happy about that even though they don't like TFs that much till I told them my (actual) weapons don't count as toys and all go to my buddy Joe.

Sorry about your friend man, take care of his figures for him.

I agree, you have gotten something from a very dear freind and that's a good thing. Everytime you look at them remember all the good times that you had with him. Cherish them and love them the way he would, you have my condolences.

Thanks everybody, both for the kind words, and the sound advice. I will definitely cherish them. I will probably sell the one's in my own collection that are still boxed, and keep the one's David left to me in their place.

Onslaught...you are totally right about the VS set now. When I think about it that way, it just makes the City Commander all the more special to me. (as my favorite Decepticon, Skywarp!).

Liege...your comment about a Transformers burial made me laugh, which felt good! I always jokingly tell people the same thing..."I'm taking it with me!" lol. Truthfully though, I'd want it to go to someone who will appreciate them, or at least know how to properly sell them off ;)

I just don't want it all to go to some pawn shop after purchasing the collection for $10 at an estate auction!

That's terrible, I'm sorry you had to go through that so young! It was nice of his mother to think of you guys though.

Sorry to hear about your student as well...I'm sure you will make his family (and him!) proud.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

When I go, I told my wife and little sisters that I want them to keep the collection together and add to it, everything that I wouldve liked, for all eternity. They just say "yeah right" but Im totally serious. Gotta keep the toys in the family.
