Burning Question Discussion Topic

Recommended Posts

Seems to me like anything "Hasbro is in control of" you guys already have covered before the Q&A ever comes up. Guess I wasted my question.

Not true at all. My post was an editorial piece and has nothing to do with the deal between TFormers and Hasbro. That deal is not my responsibility. Heck, I don't even know what that deal entails. I was simply going off of past experience as read in the threads. Seriously, what do you expect from Hasbro? That's like asking Dodge the mythos behind Dukes of Hazard or asking Best Buy if Samsung is going to have a 40" OLED TV next year.

It was my understanding that Takara originally made the toys pre-Transformers and Hasbro created the story to sell the product in the U.S. I'm not Hasbro bashing. I'm always reading in your articles how Hasbro is working closely with the creative teams behind their cartoons and comic books. I realize this is necessary to ensure that product on screen (and more recently in print i.e. Drift) but I can't imagine a company this big with a franchise this prolific is ignorant of the story their product is being presented in.

To go with your example, this is nothing like Dodge/Dukes because Dodge didn't create the Dukes of Hazzard (great show by the by) to market its cars. As to the rest I wouldn't expect them to give away secrets or generate information they don't posess. I prefer being surprised anyway.

I personally think Hasbro should appoint a Continuity Czar. Profits are up this season after all. Heck, give me 30k a year and I'll go through all the cartoons and comics to piece together a reasonable history. Then you guys can pick my work apart and I'll still be able to laugh because I'd have one of the best jobs going. I already have my stock excuse: "There's a vast and complex TF multi-verse. The (insert issue you're having here) didn't occur in the reality you're thinking of. Sorry."

Heres the difference, Dodge didn't come up with Dukes of Hazard.

And while we're at it, a store like TRU does know what exclusives they'll have for this year as reported here last year.

What I expect from Hasbro is if they're actualy going to humor us by answering questions and aknowledging us as collectors and customers give us more then aimless form answers on the questions we're "allowed" to ask.

Just saying.

Right on, Liege. I don't think I'm quite as pissed at Hasbro as you are (good question about the weak combiners we've seen lately by the way) but I fully agree with the idea.

I hope my question is used. It's about how G.I. Joe Transformers might be sold should they be made. It's simple enough for the question rules and it indicates continued demand for G.I. Joe Transformers.

I like the question. I honestly hoped at one point that they'd do something Human Alliance-style. Duke w/ Prime and Cobra Commander w/ Megatron and such. I'd pay well above market value for a Gung Ho w/ Brawn set. Boy, if I hadn't blown my credibility before, I can kiss it goodbye now, huh?

OK, bad example maybe. Hopefully, you get the point I was trying to make. It's true that Takara ultimately is the creator of the TF Universe and that Hasbro licenses off of them to bring it to the US. However, I feel Hasbro has no real interest in being the creative minds... or keeping track of it. Their only interest is finding ways to sell their stuff and make money. Why else would they use Sunbow Productions, Marvel Comics, Cartoon Network, etc., to come up with media?

I absolutely get your point and totaly agree your asessment of the situation. The bottom line is always the bottom line. I also understand that it's children who drive the product. My son loves Transformers and I certainly spend more money on his collection than I do mine. He enjoys the stories in cartoons and comics but he's five. Continuity means very little to him.

If we want to discuss money making potential, I honestly feel there's money to be made in remembering and respecting the reality that there are still alot of dedicated adult collectors. Part of that would be to organize a comprehensive timeline. I believe there's actually money to be made in the product the "creative minds" make and Hasbro should get interested for that reaon if no other.

While we're on the subject, I realize that things like the Masterpiece line are Hasbros way of taking the adult collector seriously and I appreciate that. I just wish they'd keep that in mind for adults whose interest extends beyond ultra-detailed reissues of old product. I love G1 but nostalgia only carries so far.

In the grand scheme of things, adult collectors really make up a small amount of Hasbro's revenue. Look at Titanium. That was purely for the adult collector. It had alot of potential, but execution ruined it. Alternators is another example. It was good at first, but then nonsensical repaints and overly complex transformations killed that one as well. All I expect Hasbro to offer adult collectors are the following:

BotCon

Homage repaints for existing lines

Lines like Universe/Classics/Generations where they can also capture some boy sales

Masterpiece, when they can easily convert a Takara MP figure for US sales

Beyond those things, I don't see much else happening. I just don't see the adult collector being Hasbro's market

I'm not pissed at Hasbro, sometimes discouraged, but not pissed.

It's like dealing with a girl who strings you along, even though you may love whats going on around you and dream of further possiblities, you still pretty much know what to expect.

While some companies are "to big to fail" others are just to big to give a straight answer.

Hasbro does do alot to bring new product every year even though alot of it gets muddled in repaints and things like that, but lets face it, figures like TF2 Brawn and Lockdown at the price they're going for are unheard of from the competition.

Still, things like the new practice towards combiners, repetitious repints after promise of retools, unfinished abandoned figures/lines that they said they'd complete, a unified canon...

these are the areas wher you just :roll and all I'm saying to Hasbro is thank you for the constant new figures that come out quarterly and usualy spaced out to apear monthly.

On that same note though, don't say you care about the collector's loyal patronage and opinion as you constantly sidestep the olive branch you put out there let alone charge rape dollars on your in house exclusives.

It's busness, just be upfront about that, and maybe we wouldn't mind so much when you have to turn the screw.

Take the unreleased Animated figures, if they cared, they'd be upfront and say 'sorry, the intrest isn't there, we aren't releasing the remaning anounced figures' instead of well, nothing.

Once again, just saying.

I like the concept, but I'm pretty sure that Gung Ho would be with Hound. Hound is the only one big enough to fit the ham radio into.

It doesn't matter. The M.A.S.S. device will soon put an end to their fun anyway.

If they did do this then would definitely need a Serpent.O.R figure.
