20th Prime on Clearance

Recommended Posts

20th Anniversary Optimus Prime: sure to be a rare collector's item in years to come. :roll

I dont know, it is fair to say that a mib figure that retailed for 80 will be worth at least double in 20 years, hell 80's joe figs go for 30 bucks a piece to some losers

However, in the 80's the Joe figures were opened and played with by kids, making it more difficult to find pristine figures now. With the rise of eBay and the proliferation of toy collectors, there will always be large numbers of current releases of "collectible" toy lines available MISB in the future.

What will end up being collectible and worth money in twenty years are toys are the popular ones that current kids love, which are likely not going to be the ones being hoarded unopened by speculators.

Right -- the "collectible" toys 20 years from now will be the ones nobody thinks to collect nowadays. Who would have thought in 1977 that Kenner's cheapo promotional toys for a low-budget film called "Star Wars" would be worth hundreds of dollars today?

The fact is, if there are a kajillion 20th OPs out there, they're never going to go up significantly in value because the market wouldn't support it. "Coolness" doesn't define $$ value nearly as much as rarity does.

You guys missed my joke,

20 years 160 bucks... masterpiec convoys sell for almost that much now

However, very few people in the 1970's thought to collect Star Wars figures/toys and keep them MIP. They showed up during a time when most toys were bought for and played with by children, which is why old ones are worth something today. I worked at KB Toys in the 80's, toys were toys and adults only bought them for kids. We never saw the kind of stuff you see today, with scalpers/hoarders showing up when the store opened to go through the figures looking for something considered to be rare.

Which is why I feel with today's popular toys, there are so many hoarders saving crap MISB now that in twenty years you won't see the same kind of appreciation in value.

...isn't that what I just said? :tfhuh

Sorry, I thought you were being sarcastic about the Star Wars thing. As I recall, there really weren't any Star Wars toys released until the movie was already a hit.

An aside: I remember the first four figures released were Luke, Leia and the droids - my neighbor got them, and they weren't released until around August/September of 1977. Followed shortly by the first vehicle, the X-wing fighter, which I got for my birthday in October 1977.

man, oklahoma sucks

I spoke with a friend who works toys @ WalMart....

At least here in (Smurfin' Sunny) FL, the Toy Dept Managers are given a budget of XX Dollars to distribute across all the older / not selling well Toy lines. It's mainly their judgement / decision which toys get marked down / How much....
