Mostly interchangeable, but a handful have a set handedness for aesthetic reasons.

 

G1/Cybertron Soundwave: Lefty, since he has a cannon on his right shoulder. This applies for anyone with a shoulder mounted cannon. They always get their gun on the other hand.

G1/Alternators Swindle: Left, since his ankle holster is on the left. G1 because his smaller gun acts as a sight for the big one.

Animated Grimlock: His right wrist won't always support his sword because of the gimmick. So he's usually a lefty.

Animated Longarm Prime: Right, to set him apart from Shockwave.

Animated Shockwave: Left, because G1 Shockwave shot from his left hand.

for "opening doors" maybe (you can't judge a book by its cover but yeah better covers do get noticed first)

 

 

 

oh and the left/right thing i'm mostly right with swords etc taking right priority & occasional lefties: G1 swindle like you said works better in the left & so does G1 tracks for me (maybe others but i can't remember)

For me, it depends. But I often put the guns in the right hand because I'm right handed.
