Bionicles as parts for kit-bashing?

Recommended Posts

My son has one of them there Bionicles and I noticed how articulated they are and how you can almost transformer them... and it got me thinking how they might be a good source for creating the "base" of a custom Transformer.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

they do work nicely, however aren't too stable, they disconnect very easily. If buying a building kit like that, I would recommend the neo-shifters. each pack comes wiht about 15 connectors, and they are very strong and stable.

Despite being a Lego fan, I'm agreeing with FR on the Neo-Shifters. They're the best building set Mega Brands has ever came up with. Instead of standard ball-joints like the Bionicle sets, they have what seems to be ratcheting joints similar to a Revoltech figure.

Aoi

Where can one pick up these Neo-Shifters? Target? Toys R Us? Wal-Mart? (just curious) :)

all those places.

the joints are incredibly strong...l used nothign but these on my Devastator, and his arms stand up straight on their own, he can be held upside down by his foot, and they are easy to work with.

Bionicles are very good for projects that need ball-joints and aren't likely to put a lot of strain on them. Light to medium stuff tends to hold up pretty well, but large/heavy things end up not being able to hold poses 'cause the extra weight of the added-on parts is too much.

The only reason my articulated Leobreaker can pose is 'cause I put generous amounts of clear nail-polish top-coat on the ball-joints, and that wears off the Bionicle balls and sockets fairly quickly.

I bought my first NeoShifter with the idea of using it for my GameBoy project, but it turned out to be much too big. I've since figured out that GameBot is gonna end up standing about as tall as voyager movie Prime, whereas the NeoShifter is closer to Leader Prime's height.

Depending on what you need, of course, NeoShifters' joints can probably be adapted very easily to a variety of projects.

As for the type of joints, they're soft-ratchet (they don't make click-click-click noise when they're moved), and the posts molded onto them plug into holes and they're able to rotate, as well. That gives them a lot more articulation and posability than I was expecting.

There's also little neo-shifters balls now for about 2/3 the price of the big figures, but you get a good assortment of joints. Bionicles do have a nice assortment of feet and things to make wings or weapons. The pegs that hold the armor pieces on can be quite useful too. But I find lego exoforce to be more usefull for pegs, connectors and ratched joints.
