Should there even BE a sequel?

Recommended Posts

Think about this seriously for a sec: the knee-jerk reaction is, "OMG YES we need (insert favorite TF not in the movie here)," but do you think that the movie itself is a good-enough stand-alone product that a sequel is absolutely needed? That is, do they need more movies to flesh out the rest of the conflict/Cybertronian race/etc.--either remaining absolutely awesome ("Spider-Man 2") or totally sucking seafloor ("Tomb Raider 2")--or was this movie all that you needed and a sequel seems unneccesary? And if you want one/don't want one, why?

Me, I'm torn. I would love to see Prowl, Shockwave, Grimlock, Soundwave and Wheeljack in movie form and all the carnage that would ensue, but I don't want the sequel to drop the ball or take any of the "awesome" factor away from the first one by retconning anything away.

I would love to see more giant robot action, but I'm not hankering for any character in particular. Sure Grimlock would be cool, but he wouldn't be G1 Grimlock. He would be a new character which would be just fine by me. I do love the idea of a giant aircraft carrier transformer. I can just see people being pissed off when he's called Tidal Wave. NOT G1 OH NOESSSSSSSSS!!!!1!ONE But the first movie left me wanting more, so I can't wait to see what they come up with.

Guaranteed pre-made audience plus those attracted by the first installment = guaranteed blockbuster.

Blockbuster = money. Money = The Transformers franchise can continue for a couple of years.

Conclusion = Yes, there should be a sequel.

So essentially you don't want a sequel because you're afraid of it sucking, thus taking the franchise down? To quote Wayne Gretzky, "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

Point is playing it safe and resting on past laurels is just asking for the franchise to be forgotten. They need to take the risk (a very small risk at that), and see what happens. It's better to have tried and failed then never to have tried at all.

The movie, for all there were issues I had with it, did leave me wanting more. MORE MORE MORE!!! So yes, I think there should def be a further 2 films. Poss more. The Transformers universe is such a large place I think there are stories and characters in abundence. If the writing can be done right it wont go stale. But I do think they need to keep shakeing things up. We need Cybertron in the next film.

I thought the movie was good enough to be a stand alone, despite a few loose ends. But I do want to see more giant robots fighting.

So yes.

Yes, this movie needs a sequel. Why? Because this first movie was an experiment. No one knew if it would work, or if people would take to it. Its budget was only 150 million, look at the CG in the movie and think about that for a second. A movie with probably the best CG ever cost less than half of what Spider-man 3 did. Because of that, they had to economize the robot screentime.

Now that Transformers is a massive success, the studio is literally going to throw money at the sequel. You can bet they'll have twice as much to work with, which means twice as much robot carnage. Think about the difference between the movie Alien and its sequel Aliens and you'll get the idea.

Transformers needs a sequel because the first movie was just testing the waters. The second movie is where the full potential of the franchise will be realized.

Robot Roll Call [CAMBOT! GPSY! TOM SERVO! CROOOOW! couldnt resist...] pretty much hit the nail on the head there

Yes for sequel. Sure Jurassic Park 3 stinks. But hey the first one is still a classic.

Dreamworks/Paramount/Hasbro will never risk losing what ever money they would by NOT making a sequel. I bet a sequel was already talked about even before Bay was hired to do the first film. the transformers franchise has movie series written all over it. Besides, even if the sequels suck, how will it detract from the first film? I still love the Matrix, even though Revolutions sucked donkey balls.
