Energon not the first

Recommended Posts

I was looking at tfu.info, and I noticed that Powerlinking from Energon was not the first time something like that gimmick had been seen.

I'm sure there are some who realize where I'm going with this, but for those who don't, here we go.

Multiforce from Victory also did this...sort of, it wasn't called Powerlinking though.

Here's Dash and Tacker from Multiforce:

Compared to:

Powerlinx Hot Shot

Powerlinx Inferno

And also, another thing that's the same, is that they weren't confined to one partner...(that...just sounds wrong). Multiforce had six members and they could combine with one another, so Dash could not only combine with Tacker, but there was also Tackle, Mach, Wing and Waver. Just like how Hot Shot could also combine with Downshift, Rodimus, Prowl, or Inferno/Roadblock.

Cool find! That's really interesting.

Oh they definately must have put that idea used in Multiforce in the treasure chest to be used again.

I think the guy/s who used to post on livedoor remade the Multiforce characters with energon/superlink figures as the materials

Most definitely.

Just like how Mini-Cons were a later day Micromasters. And how some of the Mini-Cons were later day Targetmasters and Headmasters in the case of Sideways.

Despite it all, Transformers will always hark back to G1 for inspiration for gimmicks.

We've had modern Headmasters (E. Omega Supreme and Armada Sideways), Targetmasters (Vector Prime came with Safeguard who turned into a ship that also functioned as a blaster for VP), this example of the Multiforce, and other things. G1 laid the foundation, and all they can do is build up from it while still keeping in touch with the original concepts.

Dash Waver sounds dirty.

Some of the Cassetteicons combined with each other like that too I believe. I don't remember exactly who they are, but my friend gave me a red one and a blue one that combines together on top and bottom in a similar way. Maybe not exactly the same thing, but close enough.

Yeah. You have, I assume, Grand Slam and Raindance, who make Slamdance. Also Squawktalk and Beastbox who make Squawkbox. But for them, one has to be on top, the other has to be bottom. No switching.

Beat me to it Soundwinder.

I'm sure there are more to be found, not just this example. I mean more things from G1 that were brought in for a primary gimmick in later lines.

I think the first geniune gimmick of recent lines was Cyber Keys, though not all of them were neat and wound up interfering with the overall figure.

I thought this was common knowledge... Hm. This must mean I'm super-intelligent.

Anyways. I think the Multiforce is superior to the Energon bots. They're smaller, combine in to Landcross and have alternative heads when combined. Poseablilty on both is pretty crappy, so there's no real comparison there.

I didn't understand it when Energon was released and I don't understand it now. WHY didn't they releases these as KB exclusives when they were doing the Micromaster repaints? It would have been the perfect tie-in. It's not like it would have been out of bounds for them, they got a Japanese reissue the same time the Micromasters did and in the same blindbox fashion. I loved the Hasbro repaints of the Micromasters, but this would have been something so much cooler.
