BotCon '07 Games of Deception Set Preview III: Thrust

Recommended Posts

I am actually looking forward to Dreadwing, particularly if Darkwing is available as a show only toy. Those to guys were fun in the comics and a hell of a lot more fun as toys than Dirge.

I don't know why most people think that anything after '86 is a non-charachter.

Wait, so Bug Bite is an homage to a previous Botcon exclusive, which was in turn an homage to a Go-Bot? Who the hell wants that?

Bug-Bite was an E-Hobby recolour of Bumblebee from the Takara Minibot reissue. All of the E-Hobby set were GoBot homages.

I don't think I even need to point out the irony in you defending Dreadwind from being a non-character, then calling it Dreadwing.....

... I hadn't even realised what the hell Bugbite was. What a waste of everyones time and money. I was feeling better about the cost of the set because of the sweet remold (though I'm still annoyd about the nonattendee crap, but i digress)

But this is just a waste. I can see doing a dreadwind , but Bugbite!? I'd forgotten what a halfassed useless repaint that was in the first place. We'd be better off with a head remold and a gold crome paint job and have a goldbug,

I would've loved Hubcap. (My first TF!)

Don't like it, don't go. Problem solved. :thumb

Its defintie we won't see them at retail. Part of BotCon/Hastak agreement is they can't do anything the other is doing.

The high price tag is why they make the money back on a single con btw.

Two words:

Red Excellion.

The Hasbro and Takara "exclusive" versions are different.

And perhaps you missed the part where BotCon owns the wing remolds NOT Hasbro. Hasbro would have to do it's own remold - and I don't see them bothering to go to the expense to remold wings for a dead toyline.

Actually, that IS my point.

I think the con set will be the set for G1 purists. I doubt we'll see Dirge or Thrust anywhere else.

However, I think there is enough demand for a Thundercracker that I can see it getting shoehorned into another line eventually. The paint deco will be more "extreme" maybe. Less G1. Fans who NEED the Botcon set will be pleased. Armchair onlookers who complained about the lack of updating will be pleased.

I'll concede that any remolding would likely come in the form of an added gimmick.

But every line since G1 has had figures redecoed in later lines. The jets are a no-brainer.

I think this set will not be recreated exactly. This is your one chance to get some of the remolds in the set and it's even more G1-esque than the Classics decos were if that's what you want.

Now, that said, I don't think it would be much of a stretch to see the Classics seeker mold get redecoed in later lines. And if that happens, I'd expect the most likely candidates for names to be: ANOTHER Starscream deco, Thundercracker, Thrust and Dirge -- in that order. With a dark horse possibility of the figure getting a "repaint" as a Deluxe Jetfire.

I think, personally, that Botcon exclusives have never been a good value for the price. They struck gold this year with a concept that was pretty obvious. But it's too expensive for many fans. The conduct I've seen from the hardcore Botcon fans and organizers is pretty shameful.

And I think we'll see more seekers come out of this mold. Because redecos are a fact of life and it's the same molds that get redecoed over and over again.

Even if I had the money to spend (and I don't), I think there will be a more widely available -- if less "fan-pleasing" -- way for fans to round out their classics set. And that will come in the form of less G1-fixated redecoes, likely without remolding except for gimmicks, in lines over the next three years.

And even if I wasn't forced to wait by the pricetag, I'd wait for it on general principle. Because a pimped out blue jet with the Starscream mold has gotta happen. It may have flames on the wings. It may look like Armada Thundercracker's paintjob.

But I'll take it because I can't scrape up the money for this set... and am not too partial on "must haves" that complete sets being much more expensive than the retail prices.

Give me a minicon port and a red face for Thundercracker. Give me grappling action fanblades for Thrust or battle damage for Dirge, give 'em to me in packaging where Optimus is a firetruck and Megatron is a monkey for all I care... and if it's under $20 a pop and I can buy them ala carte when I'm stocking up on shaving cream or getting batteries at the store, I'll take it over the Botcon debacle that has emerged.

... I hadn't even realised what the hell Bugbite was. What a waste of everyones time and money. I was feeling better about the cost of the set because of the sweet remold (though I'm still annoyd about the nonattendee crap, but i digress)

See, I'm in the other camp on this. I'd like to see the major Gobots all get decent representation as Transformers, even if only as redecos... and would find this a much more interesting self-contained botcon set.

Ramjet as Autobot Leader One. A Sideways as Cykill? Bumblebee as Bugbyte. Optimus Prime as Staks.

Doesn't infringe upon the mass market consumer's ability to collect a complete line. Provides a cool exclusive. Further ties Gobots into the TF lore, which I think is a positive thing, longterm, as it enriches the mythos and folds back in what now amounts to a tiny offshoot of the fandom anyway.

I think mixing GoBots & the Jets in 1 set is a stupid idea. Separately? Awesome!
