BotCon '07 Games of Deception Set Preview: Dirge

Recommended Posts

Oh crap. Before I let this get too much further, I like this toy and wish I could afford it.

I can afford this set. I just don't like it enough to justify the purchase.

Maybe we should be psychoelectronically phase shifted crosswards in timespace, so that the new us could buy it and like it.

ok that sounded RILLY GHEY :redface

wow. just wow....

i can't believe that people where actually expecting dirge to be remolded. i mean i'm not sticking up for the price point, because it is ridiculous, but seriously, dirge looks Powerglideing great! i'm sure they'll more than likely remold thrust, after which the other one that needs remolded to work as a seperate character is dreadwing (given that he's using the jetfire mold) as the mold is too much like jetfire to work for another character. the problem here, i believe, is as cooban pete said, this is more of a continuation of the classics line rather than being a separate set as. as for blaming hasbro... well i'm glad they gave us a conehead at retail, and i highly doubt there being that much retooling on a botcon exclusive figure. yea, they should have released TC at retail, maybe even pairing him up with a dirge as a walmart/target/ect... exclusive or something to cover cost, but that didn't happen. was it a Powerglide up? yea. was it a big Powerglide up? probably. is it something to leave the fandom over? no. mistakes happen, thats just the way life is. doing what they're doing isn't a bad idea, but it should have been done further down the road than on the tail end of classics. whether or not thats even a feasible idea, i don't know, but then again i'm not an expert in that field.

Why won't the Botcon people address the negative reactions by the people who support their industry?

Actually, people who support "our" industry i.e. those who attend BotCon, Club members and so on, have asked for top notch exclusives and that is what we are giving them. Also, judging by the rate at which the box sets are selling, I think it is safe to say people are very happy with the offering we are putting forth.

way to say you could give a rat's ass about the fandom, and great attempt at discouraging those on the fences to stay home. you shouldn't make snide comments when your attempting to promote a function, you should be more professional than that. although what should people expect. thats all i've ever seen in the way of botcon exclusives, overly priced repaints, so why should we expect anything more? something top notch would include much more than just a repaint. even if thrust or anybody else is slightly remoulded, i wouldn't call the set top notch.

as for using the sales of these sets to justify the price point and the fact that they're just repaints is ludicrous. as so many have pointed out, you could sell dog turds painted red and blue, call it craptimus prime and slap that botcon exclusive label on it and sure enough folks'll line up for miles to pick it up simply because of it's exclusive status. the majority of folks that pick this up doesn't see dirge, thundercracker, thrust, dreadwing, and bugbite, they see cold hard cash. a good portion of these are going to be snapped up by third party retailers and then re-sold for an even more ridiculous amount of cash. not to mention the fact that the set has been on sale for how long? and we're just now getting to see a glimpse of this thing. that right there should tell you that alot of people could give a Blot less what the set looks like, they just know it's an exclusive. the very least you could do is not come off like a smart ass when somebody expresses distaste about your product. it's better to make no comment at all than make the kind of comment you did.

now, i'm not calling everybody that buys the set morons. some people just have the money to burn on it, and thats fine and dandy. it isn't my money so why should i care? i'm sure if i had the extra cash i'd probably pick it up too. i suck at painting, just ask my 1/100 wing gundam :-P ALSO i'm not saying that "ZOMG BOTCON JUST BECAME A RIP-OFF!!" because honestly, it's always been stupid repaints sold at a ridiculous price point. so it's nothing new and i don't see why ppl thought anything otherwise.

I would hate for anyone to misconstrue my rant as that of someone mad that they are just repaints... I could care less, i'm not that picky, my beef is with the price and the fact that these figs should have been mass market available by hasbro.

The main problem is that this year, the BotCon figures are being used to continue/conclude a mass retail line, NOT to provide something totally different and standalone i.e. last year's Beast Wars set. And that was the real mistake IMO.

yeah

The problem I have is that if the other figures look like Dirge, they will be out of place from Starscream, Skywarp, and Ramjet.

Those three all have stylized patterns on them, and Dirge's is very G1-ish. They're gonna stand out in a bad way.

I don't think they'll look that different...

Hmm, does anyone else think that Dirge image on Botcon's front page glistens a bit like one of those repaints in the kitbashers/customizers board?

You could take the $300, buy three Ramjets for $10 each (or whoever else will be used as a base), an airbrush, paint, and learn how to paint your own Dirge. I'd imagine you'd have it down pretty well by the third Ramjet. You could probably buy the other base figures and repaint those as well, and still have money left over. =)

That said, I kinda like the more detailed paintjob of this botcon Dirge.. I'd even pay $11 for him instead of $10.

:tflaugh Says the guy who's preordering them

He almost looks hand painted to me. I didn't have any real interest in these guys, so he gets a big "whatever".

I'm sure it is handpainted, since they do that all the time with initial prototypes that get shown to the public.

answer: yes :tflaugh

Between the movie and this Botcon set, I'm really starting to be embarrassed to be a Transformers Fan. Maybe the Centurions Fandom has an opening.

Power X-Treme!

OMG CENTURIONS FTW!!!@!! :luv

God bless the interwebs, cause none of my friends remember that show...
