Why do they even call him "Megatron" anymore?

Recommended Posts

Megatron is completely different in every series he appeares in. Why should HasTak continue to refer to him as Megatron if they're not going to make a conscious effort for him to bare any resemblance to his namesake, like Prime always does? Really, will the G1 fans riot if the decepticon leader is not named Megatron? What would be the point if he has nothing in common with the G1 version?

Your under the assumption that the kids that are buying the majority of the figures from the current lines have a clue what G1 Megs looked like. To them Megatron looks like the guy in whatever series they happen to watch. They don't care if once upon a time a decade before they were born he looked different. They jsut care that he looks like that cool robot on the cartoon they like.

As muc has we as fans might care about continuity, thats not what sells toys. Cool figures with neat action features and a link to a cartoon are what sell toys. The names get reused to hold on to copyrights and trademarks, and everyonce in awhile they throw out some fan wank keep the Starscreaming from all of us down to a dull roar. Hasbro is doing whats profitable for them. Guys like us could completely stop buying toys today and it would barely dent their sales numbers.

That's a little unfair to younger TF fans, don't you think? Just because someone didn't watch it in the 80's doesn't mean they aren't a 'true' fan. I'm well aware of how fickle children can be, but that doesn't change the fact that a lot of kids will really 'get in' to something and start finding out as much as possible about it. It's entirely likely that kids are as attached to the name Megatron in their own way as we are, and wouldn't really respond to a new Decepticon leader, any more than they'd respond to someone other than Optimus Prime leading the Autobots. Kids are fans too.

Yeah but they will never have grown up with it and have that sentimental attachment to it.

They do it to annoy you and rape our precious childhood like the capitalist scrum they are.

End of Discussion.

Mods please close thread.

:schin

But then what would I laugh at?

How is this thread still going? It's a fact: Good guy leader = Optimus Prime, bad guy leader = Megatron. It's a cpyright thing so they can keep the rights to the names, nothing more. I'm sorry that Cybertron Megatron doesn't look like G1 Megatron. I wouldn't be interested if they didn't try to shake things up every once in a while at Hasbro/Takaratomy.

this thread made my Hotspot bleed, just thought you should all know that.

Well blame it on Lord Atmo. He wants live movie Megatron to be voiced by Frank Welker and that prompted me to start a thread about how Megatrons are a lot more varied than peole give them credit for.

Don't blame it on Atmo...a lot of people, pro and anti-movie alike, wanted Welker cast.
