g1 episodes required to understand TF:TheMovie ?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of renting Transformers the movie on VHS or DVD if I could find it. Is there any G1 episodes I need to watch in order to understand it?

Not particularly.

Previous eps might help by explaining who the characters are, why they're fighting each other.. but it should basically stand up on its own.

No, you really don't need to see any Generation 1 episodes to understand it. I saw it with only information on Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Hot Rod from a friend of mine. So go ahead and watch it, it's not that hard to understand.

As others said, it's pretty self explanatory and not hard to follow. The whole premise of the movie is to introduce a whole slew of new characters never seen in the show before anyway... In other words, whether you were a first time watcher of the movie or a long time fan of the series, all the characters in the movie were new anyway. So as long as you know what a Transformer is, you'll be fine.

To see a question like this makes me feel ooooooooooold.

yeah, you don't need to see any prior eps. Especially since the movie was in production while season 1 was airing on tv.

If at all possible you should see at least season 1 first. You don't need to, but the epic scale and devastatingly sad scenes might be lost on you if you have very little background. Excellent movie though. I would just pay a little bit more than renting it and buy it from best buy or someting. It's usually only fifteen bucks.

If anything, just watch More than Meets the Eye, and maybe a few of the Dinobot-centric episodes (I forget what their debut episode was called, but there's also Dinobot Island to look into as well). That should be enough to introduce you to the characters.

But really, as everybody else has said, the movie is a pretty stand alone plot. Everything you really need to know is in the movie itself.

You may want to watch the episodes with the Constructicons too, just to know more about Devastator as he seems to have an important role during the Autobot City Battle
